The Problem with Familiars

As the light died down Izumi was able to see what she had summoned. As already mentioned, Izumi had no idea that this was a test of her magical power. However, humans summoning familiars and demons summoning familiars, while using the same process did not summon the same things. Demons using the ritual summoned demonic creatures, but humans didn't. They summoned the demon who's seal was drawn. That seal for Izumi was Kalego Nabarius.

Izumi stared down at the head of the teacher before her as he stared up at her. Only half of his body was sticking out of the floor while the other half was standing behind her. "Oh man, is that supposed to happen?"

"No!" The word was yelled in all the rage the man could muster. He could not believe this had happened to him. "What have you done you, you brat?! Hurry up and help get me out of here."

To be fair, she did exactly what he said and grabbed the collar of his robes before pulling him up through the circle. "No, idiot don't…" but it was too late as Izumi used all herstrength and yanked the man up through the magic ring. For a brief moment he seemed fine until a puff of smoke surrounded him. In the place of the angry teacher was a rather fluffy looking cat. It had sleek black fur and feathered wings of the same ebony color. The only odd thing was the rather vicious looking front feet that were scaled and had razor sharp talons on them.

"What do you know wings and claws?" She mused quietly. The teacher cat looked at himself and then fell to the ground in shock. She ran to check on him, unsure what was happening but knowing she probably screwed up the whole ceremony.

"Oh my master." Az cried, tears seemed to stream down his face. His voice rising about the babble of teens who were entranced by the happenings. "What a remarkable show of strength. I knew that the teacher's snide remarks were actually wounding you. You must have decided to take your revenge by turning him into your familiar." The boy seems so happy that she had 'exacted revenge upon the disrespectful imbecile.'

"You." The teacher seethed as she put her hands up in surrender.

"Listen, Teach. I don't wanna point fingers but I did exactly what you asked of me. I am sorry this happened though."

"How dare you." The cat raised a taloned fore leg to strike at her. However before the strike could land a cry of pain left the poor professor as electricity vibrated his whole body. He collapsed upon the ground with a light thud.

"Oh, shit." She hissed, feeling a little sympathy for the downed professor. "Punishment was really no joke." She lifted the cat into her arms cradling his limp form. Her blue eyes looked around the hall, there were still more students who needed to take the ritual. She felt bad for ruining their chance to get a familiar. "Azz, do you think I should take him to gramps?" She was sure that the older demon would know what to do, plus he could get an extra teacher to cover the ritual.

"I think you should break his spirit until he can't possibly think about disrespecting you again." The demon enthusiastically tried to tempt her. Az didn't really like the esteemed teacher as he had done nothing but antagonize his master since stepping foot in the hall. An attitude adjustment would serve him well in the pink haired demon's opinion.

"Somehow I think that will just make the situation worse." The girl sighed. The teacher already hated no need to add fuel to that particular fire.

"What's going on?" An older voice cut through the crowd of teens. He was also a teacher from the opening ceremony. The one who told her what the spell did.

"Professor Dali." Asmodeus nodded to him.

"Ah, I turned Professor Kalego into a familiar by accident." Izumi admitted to the adult clearly feeling guilty. While it was probably karma for being so aggressive, she had pulled him through the circle sealing his fate.

The brown haired teacher looked at the little cat in the girl's arms then to the surrounding students who just nodded. "Ah, well, I'll take over here if you want to take him to the nurse or principal." The teacher said even though his voice broke a little trying to hold back his laugh. The irony of the situation was rather amusing. Being turned into a familiar by your hated boss's grandchild. It was a riot.

Kalego couldn't think of an even worse fate than the one he was experiencing right now. Forced to serve a teenager, and not just any teenager, but Sullivan's granddaughter.

Despite her wearing the incorrect uniform the professor couldn't believe that so many people had been confused about the girl's gender. He should have stayed in his nest after all the things that had happened today. So many bad omens pointed to doom and he ignored all of them.

As he layed in this girl's arm while being carried to the principal's office he couldn't help but wonder what he had done to deserve this.

"Old man." Izumi cried out as she opened the door to the office.

"Oh Izumi~" The chair demon sang. "You've come to visit me."

"Yeah, I have a problem." She looked down at Kalego. Her face was pretty neutral about the whole affair and it irked the demon more than anything else about the day. "I…I turned the teacher into a cat." The red haired cat demon was the first to move to Kalego.

Every hair on his body went stiff as the guard…cat of the school had not previously noticed the security demon. "How exceptional Lady Izumi." Opera praised a predatory look in their eyes. "May I see?" They held out their hands for the furry bundle.

Izumi looked at the tense cat before dumping him in Opera's awaiting arms. While the girl wasn't going to let the cat fall to injury, she definitely was going to get back at him for being so hostile to her for no reason. Plus Opera was her mate, whatever that fully entailed but she was sure making her mate pleased was part of it.

The red head moved away with his bundle petting him gently. She did notice that the cat made no attempt to escape despite his obvious displeasure. She kept an eye on them for a moment, but then turned her attention to her grandfather.

The older demon was clearly struggling to keep it together. "Sir, look at how soft he is." Opera shoved the cat into Sullivan's face. This action was too much for the older demon and he burst into peals of laughter. Even though he was a cat, Izumi could see the scowl at the man's antics.

"Old man, this is serious. Can you please stop laughing? Kalego doesn't seem to want to be my familiar. Is there a way to, you know, cancel the familiar bond?"

"Canceling the bond. No, not without jeopardizing your life and his." The chair demon whipped his eyes with a long finger. "I'm afraid the only option is to wait until the contract expires in a year."

"A year?!" The shout of the teacher drew the two's attention to him as he was clutched to the security demon's chest. "You!"

"Kalego, that is no way to talk to the young lady of our house." They flicked the black cat in his ear. The little black ears laid further back on Kalego's little kitty head.

"Look, I already apologized. I won't do it again." She gave the cat a glare. "I am trying to help you out of this situation, which is partially your fault if you would have told me how to fix the problem."

"Well, you two are stuck together until the contract expires. So best to make the most of it." Opera smiled down at the cat. "Right, Kalego."

That simple statement seemed to drive everything home for the overworked teacher and like a stone he collapsed from the shock and stress. How could this have happened?!

Balam's day had gone rather well, as in there were no serious incidents. So to find Kalego curled up in their nests with an ill look on his face took him by surprise. He hurried to the nest to check on his state. He seemed to be physically unharmed, so whatever had happened must have been mental.

"Oh your back." Dali called from the doorway. It was considered disrespectful to enter a packmates room when you, yourself were not pack or kin. So the brown haired teacher waited outside to either be called in or for the gargoyle teacher to come out. The larger demon moved to the door.

"Oh Dali, what happened?" The male was worried for his mate, having seen him like this very rarely over the years. Granted most of those times were in their school days.

"It seems one of the first years summoned him as a familiar." Dali made an attempt not to laugh since the gargoyle was worried. Demons in general were very protective of their mates and it would be highly ill advised for him to antagonize the higher ranked demon. "I brought the newspaper for you to see."

The white haired male took the paper and stared at the front page. His eyes widened as she saw the bluette he had been looking for adorning the front page, alongside their mate now a fluffy hellcat. "I see, so it's just the stress?"

"Yes, I believe it will take a few days for him to recover. Might I suggest a day off tomorrow? So you can be here if he falls into an evil cycle." Dali gave the man a gentle pat on his arm.

"Yes, I believe I will." Balam said distractedly. His eyes looked back to Kalego's sleeping form. Well, this was a surprising twist but not ultimately unwelcomed. At least the angry demon had met their pack mate. Perhaps that would dampen the blow of becoming a familiar to him. After all, it was the duty as not only a teacher but also as an older pack mate to ensure that their mates were safe. It would give Kalego a better avenue to do this.

For now, Balam would comfort him and then he would break the news if he didn't already know.
