Part 5: The Bat, The Canary, & The Archer
"I'm telling you, he doesn't wanna see us!" Ollie argued as he stopped the car in front of Wayne Manor.
"Then why did he open the gate?!" Dinah asked.
"Who knows?! He's a nut! He doesn't wanna see us!"
Dinah rolled her eyes as they got out of the car, "You've been saying that since we agreed to this trip! You've been saying since we left Star City! And I don't care! We're seeing him!"
"He doesn't care!"
"I don't give a damn! We're talking to him if it's the last thing you do!"
Ollie blinked. "There was something wrong with that statement."
"No, there wasn't."
They walked to the door and rang the doorbell. A minute later, Helena answered the door. A huge smile came across her face, "AUNT DINAH! UNCLE OLLIE!"
"HELENA!" Dinah pulled Helena in a hug at lightning speed. "Oh, my God, sweetie! How are you?!"
Helena rested her head on Dinah's shoulder, "Better now!"
Dinah broke the hug and looked Helena over, "You're so beautiful!"
Helena smiled. "How is everyone? Laurel, Connor, Mia?!"
"They're fine. Doing wonderful. And they miss you."
"I promise to see them as soon as I can."
"Take your time," Dinah reassured. "They know you're… dealing with a lot right now."
"A bit," Helena shrugged.
"So…" Ollie said. "What's his name?"
"Huh?"
"The guy who has you smiling so much."
Helena laughed. "I'm smiling because my aunt and uncle are here!" She hugged Ollie. "And I missed you, too."
Smiling, Ollie hugged Helena back, "Good to see you, kid."
Dinah fell a bit solemn. "Sweetie, where's your father?"
Helena paused. "How crazy is it that that's a question you can ask me?"
Dinah giggled. "Very."
"He's in the Cave. Working on some stuff. He said you guys can head on down."
"Okay."
"He doesn't wanna see us," Ollie groaned.
"Crap…" Helena whispered.
"What?"
"Dad bet me 20 bucks you'd say that."
Ollie set his jaw while Dinah laughed.
Ollie and Dinah walked into the Cave, finding Bruce typing at the computer. Once they got to the base of the stairs, Dinah and Ollie looked at each other then walked to the computer. They stopped behind Bruce. "Bruce…" Ollie began.
"A number of things to say," Bruce declared, still focused on the screen.
"Yes," Dinah replied. "A lot."
"But none more important than this…" Bruce stopped typing and turned around. He smiled at them. "Thank you… for taking such good care of Helena."
Dinah smiled, brightly. "Oh, we don't need thanks for that, Bruce. Ever."
"Yeah, she's a great kid," Ollie added. "Always has been. It's been a privilege to help raise her and watch her grow up."
"Amen to that."
Bruce nodded. "It's good to see you both."
"You, too, Bruce," Ollie replied.
"And congratulations are in order, and long overdue. On Connor and Laurel."
While Dinah smiled, Ollie jerked his head back. "You know about them?"
"Them," Bruce nodded. "And your half-sister, Emiko, daughter of a woman named Shado. Your other half-sister, Thea."
"Yeah, all that was mind-trippy," Ollie groaned, rubbing the back of his head.
"That's putting it lightly," Dinah mused.
Bruce smirked. "And about Mia Smoak."
Ollie threw his head back, groaning, "Uggghhhh! Everyone knows about that…"
Dinah giggled.
"Oh, now, she laughs about it!"
"It was over thirty years ago and I always liked Felicity. Besides, we were separated at the time. I've dealt with it."
"I got a tire thrown at me when you found out Felicity was pregnant!" Ollie shouted.
"That's because she told me," Dinah replied. "Not you."
Ollie growled.
"I imagine those are some of the reasons you helped watch over Helena," Bruce replied.
"Some," Dinah replied. "The others were… Selina came to us afraid of what could happen if people, her enemies, knew she had a daughter. But… after she told us you were her father…" She took a breath. "It hurt that we never knew that. Or told you."
"I always figured Helena was yours," Ollie admitted. "But… to know I was right was… damn, I'm sorry, Bruce."
"It's alright," Bruce replied. "I understand why Selina did what she did."
"So you don't hate her?"
"She had her reasons. I'm the last one to judge her for that."
Dinah shuffled a bit. "Do you… hate us?"
"Not at all," Bruce replied, immediately. "Like Huntress, you protected, cared for, raised, and loved my daughter. What more could I possibly ask for?"
"So… we're good?"
"If you can forgive me for things I've said before."
"You just forgave us," Ollie reminded. "Fair's fair."
Bruce leaned back. "So, what's it been like to let the new generation handle things?"
"Retirement's been amazing!" Dinah smiled.
"Good thing, too," Ollie said. "My fingers were losing their strength."
"I don't believe that for a second," Bruce replied, causing Ollie to smirk. "Regardless, I'm glad you both have been able to take it easy now. Star City is well-defended."
"We think so."
"It was actually something I considered for Terry once upon a time," Bruce admitted.
"Asking one of our kids to help out in Gotham?" Dinah asked.
"Yes. But, after Basem arrived, I decided that was plenty. Plus… it was hard to call and admit I was wrong."
"We would've answered," Ollie informed, sincerely.
"I know. It's my stubbornness I tend to have a problem getting over."
"Preaching to the choir, Bats."
"You have an amazing team here," Dinah said. "The work they did against the Moirai was a master class."
"Oh, you heard about that?" Bruce asked.
"Who didn't?" Ollie chuckled. "Superman brags on them like it was his son who took them down. And we all know Jonathan is in space."
"Has Terry ever met him?" Dinah asked.
"Twice," Bruce answered. "They get along well. Some things aren't like their parents."
Dinah and Ollie chuckled.
"Curious: exactly, how does your roster work?"
"Laurel took my codename," Dinah explained. "Connor took Ollie's. And Mia has two roles: she's our computer expert and she has Ollie's archery skills. Emiko gave Mia her old codename of Red Arrow."
Bruce smiled. "You welcomed Mia in?"
"We welcomed everyone in," Dinah corrected. "Thea and Emiko back in the day. Then Mia."
"Lots of work." Ollie looked off, lost in thought. "Lots of love."
"That's great to hear," Bruce nodded.
"Not bad for a guy who didn't want to join the League, eh?"
"Not bad at all." Bruce shrugged, "If it means anything… I'm proud of both of you."
Dinah smiled. "It means so much."
"I guess…" Ollie rubbed the back of his head, "…I owe you for a lot."
"Same to you," Bruce replied. "Thank you."
Ollie's eyes widened. "Damn, you really are dying!"
"OLLIE!" Dinah elbowed him in the chest.
"OW!" Ollie recoiled.
"You never lost your strength, Dinah," Bruce smiled.
"Not a bit!" Ollie growled.
Dinah stared at Bruce. "Bruce… I want to ask you something. I'm just…"
"It's okay, Dinah," Bruce replied. "By all means."
Dinah paused for a moment, not sure if she should ask. But she felt she needed to. "Are you ready? For… ya now."
Bruce contemplated for a moment. "Nearly so."
"What else do you need to do?" Ollie asked.
"Among other things, I need to hear stories about my friends' adventures after I stopped speaking to them. In particular about their children. Like how Mia came about."
"Haven't seen you nearly four decades and that's the first thing you wanna know about?!"
"Why else did you think I wanted to see you?" Bruce smiled, mischievously.
Ollie slapped his forehead.
Dinah couldn't stop laughing.
A/N: This part requires some explanation.
Yes, a lot of what I came up with as far as Ollie's and Dinah's children was inspired by both the comics and the CW show, Arrow. Also, now I wanna do a story where Terry teams up with Superman's son. I also wanna do one where the Dark Knights and Team Arrow team-up. Wow. I need to slow down the writing. Or speed it up. We'll see.
For clarity's sake, no, there is no DCAU-canon son of Superman, but, yes, I gave him the name he has in the comics. But here is my logic for including him: in "Epilogue", Bruce says "Kent called". In my head, I always thought that meant Superman's son, not Superman himself, because Bruce said "Kent" not "Clark". I know that's reaching a bit but that's my logic/headcanon.
What do you all think? Would like to see a story where Terry teams up with the son of Superman and/or Team Arrow? Maybe an all-out Justice League crossover? Let me know!
