The next morning, when Hank and Olivia woke up, they had 5 kids and 2 dogs in with them. Erin, Jay and Camille had gone out for breakfast with the group from Intelligence, Will, Natalie and the kids.
"I see the twins are now getting out of their cribs."
"And they are definitely in their terrible two's. I guess it's a good thing that they're no longer living here. I'll miss them though. It will be nice to be having our house to ourselves. Erin, Jay and Camille will just be next door and we do see everyone else all the time."
"But it's not like you watch the 3 of them every day like you used to either."
"Right."
"I'm glad Trevor now has his family back in his life. A part of me wishes our kids had grandparents but they do call Don 'Grandpa' though and he loves it."
"My mom loved being a grandma. Justin was 10 when she died. She would have loved being a great-grandma too."
"I'm not sure how Serena would have been with being a grandma. If she hadn't fallen down the subway stairs after coming out of a bar, I would have hoped she would have gotten help for her drinking problem. Are Camille's parents still around?"
"I haven't seen or talked to them since Camille's funeral. They don't even know about Justin as far as I know."
"Where do they live?"
"Around Atlanta the last I knew, since that's where Camille's sister was. Her sister is pretty snobby and lives in this huge house. She never thought I was good enough for Camille. Camille's dad and I always got along but sometimes I think her mom thought the same thing the sister did."
Hank kissed Olivia and got up to go to the bathroom. Just as Hank came out of the bathroom, the doorbell rang, so he went down with the dogs. It was Al, Meredith, Trudy, Mouch and Camille's parents.
"Tom. Gloria."
"Hey, Hank."
"We found out that they lived a couple doors down from us."
"Huh. The last I knew, you were in Atlanta."
"We got into it with Judy a few years back and we didn't want to go back to Chicago to live. We were there recently and went to the cemetery. Why didn't you tell us about Justin?"
"I didn't know where I stood with all of you after Camille's death. I always got a long with Tom but it always seemed to me that you didn't necessarily think I was good enough for Camille."
"I never thought that. I was in denial after she died. I hated seeing my baby get sick and then die from that terrible disease. No parent ever wants to have to bury their child."
"I know. Come on in."
Everyone came in and went into the kitchen. Hank put the coffee on, let the dogs out and told Tom and Gloria about what had happened to Justin and told them about Olivia. While they were talking, the kids had woken up and went to the bathroom. Once they were all done and Olivia changed the twins, they came downstairs.
"Hello."
"Hey. These are Camille's parents, Tom and Gloria Martin. Tom and Gloria, this is my wife Olivia."
"It's nice to meet you."
"You too."
"This is Noah and this is Rachel. These 3 are Daniel, Justin and Nicole. Daniel, these are your great-grandparents Tom and Gloria. They're your Grandma Camille's parents."
"Hi."
"Hi. These two look like they're trouble."
"They are."
The 5 kids went to watch TV.
"Daniel was only a year old when Justin died."
"We actually met Olive once before Daniel was born. Justin brought her down to meet us."
"He never told me that. Olive remarried in June. He's quite a bit older than her but he treats her well. They just recently had a baby and he adopted the kids."
"She seems like a very nice girl."
"She still misses him but Trevor has helped to make things easier. She didn't want the kids growin' up without a dad."
"That's understandable. Are you ok with that?"
"Oh, yeah. Trevor is a good guy. I just want a relationship with my grandchildren"
"How long have you and Olivia been together?"
"We've been together just over two years and we'll be married two years in December. Olivia helped me get through losing Justin as did Erin."
"There is something we always wondered about Erin."
"Which is?"
"Is she your daughter?"
"She is. We found out a year and a half ago. Whatever happened between me and her mother was before I even met Camille. I was young and stupid when all that happened. I asked Bunny if Erin was mine and she lied to both of us. If she had been honest about it and said she was, I know I would have had to tell Camille and I somehow have a feeling it would have caused problems for my marriage."
"Camille had a feeling Erin was yours and she loved Erin as much as she loved Justin. She would always say that Erin was too much like you not to be yours but she wasn't going to ask because she didn't think her mother was your type."
"She wasn't but like I said, I was young and stupid when all that happened.
"Erin and her husband named their daughter Camille Olivia. She had such a good relationship with Camille and she has a great relationship with Olivia as well. I know I should have told you what happened to Justin."
"It works both ways. We never kept in touch with you either but it wasn't because we didn't care. It just would have been nice to hear from you that our only grandson had passed away."
"I apologize for that. None of us were handling that too well. I was a mess and heading down the wrong path again just like I did after Camille died and Olive was all of a sudden a single mom. I tried being as supportive as I could to her. She and Daniel lived with me until I moved here and then she and the kids lived here with us until the beginning of the year when she moved in with Trevor. As far as the kids are concerned, Olivia is their grandma and Trevor is their dad. Daniel knows about Justin because Olive talks to him about him all the time and I've told him about Camille. The one thing I miss about being in Chicago is the time I used to spend at the cemetery. Sometimes I would go every day. Olivia has never discouraged me from talking about her and Trevor is the same way with Olive about Justin. Justin and I didn't have the best relationship as it was but it got worse after Camille passed and I take the blame for most of that. I threw myself more into my job after she died. I couldn't handle him."
Hank ended up telling them about what had happened with the accident Justin was in and both of them ending up in prison.
"He did tell us about being in jail and why he was in the Army. We had gone to Chicago and went to the cemetery. We ran into Trudy and she was putting flowers at both graves. She told us that you weren't in Chicago any longer but she didn't say where you were. We moved here a few months ago and just recently realized that Al and Meredith were neighbors of ours."
"I'm glad they brought you here. Hopefully you two can get to know your great-grandkids. The Army and becomin' a dad helped Justin grow up. He took his time in the Army very seriously and he loved being a dad. We were finally starting to have an actual relationship again. I didn't tell him this enough but I was so proud of the man he had become. He would have been so proud of his children. Olive found out after his death that she was pregnant again, which made it even harder."
"We'd like that very much. I believe it made things harder for her. I didn't handle Camille's death too well. I should have been there more than I was and the one thing I regret more than anything was moving down to Atlanta to be closer to Judy. When we tried coming up when you told us she was sick, it was right after Tom had knee surgery Judy said he probably shouldn't fly. I told her I needed to be with my daughter and she said she was also my daughter. I told her she didn't have cancer. Everything has always been about her."
"Some people are like that. How are Charlie and the girls?"
"Charlie retired and plays golf every day just so he's not around her all the time. Most of the girls moved as far away from her as they could and they hardly ever come home anymore. They've invited their dad to come see them but not their mother. Go figure. 3 of them are on the west coast. I'm surprised Charlie has stayed married to her as long as he has. She asked many times what Camille saw in you."
"Camille always wondered what Charlie saw in her."
"That has crossed our minds too and the girls have even wondered that. Judy was always so critical of the fact that you two only had one kid. I said she knew what had happened when Justin was born and Camille had a hard time carrying to full term after that. She blamed that on you."
"So, it's my fault that Camille had a stillborn and that she kept miscarrying? I wanted more kids but I knew what Camille had gone through. She wasn't Judy and could get pregnant whenever she wanted."
"The girls definitely have their dad's personality. Vicky became a cop."
"Did she?"
"Yep and Judy was not happy about that. Of course her son is named Henry, which also pissed Judy off. She always thought it was so cool that her Uncle Hank was a cop and she decided she wanted to be just like him. She's the only one still in Atlanta but her dream is to work with that lady cop here in New York that was held for 4 days by that psycho serial killer/rapist a few years back. She wants to investigate rapes and all that like this one does. Her husband is also a cop."
Olivia gave them one of her cards.
"Give this to your granddaughter."
"You're that cop."
"Yeah, I am."
"Small world."
"Yeah, really. Coffee?"
"Sure."
"Al? Meredith?"
"Yeah, thanks."
"Sure, thanks."
"Trudy? Mouch?"
"Sure. Thanks."
Hank got everyone some coffee.
"Honey, what are we doing about breakfast?"
"That's a good question."
Then Noah came into the kitchen.
"Daddy, we're hungry."
"What do you want for breakfast?"
"Can we go out?"
"We could do that."
"Yay!"
"Have all of you eaten?"
"We have not. We were about to ask if you wanted to go out with us."
"We can drop the kids off on the way back. The least we can do is feed them before we take them home."
Then the doorbell rang.
"I got that. I'm heading up to take a shower."
"Ok."
Olivia went to answer the door. It was Olive, Trevor, Maggie, Ed, Diana and the kids.
"Mornin'."
"Good morning."
"Here's the cake."
"Thanks."
"Are the Olinskys here this early?"
"They are and so are Trudy and Mouch. They brought Camille's parents with them."
"I haven't seen them since Camille's funeral."
"I guess neither of us contacted them after Justin died either."
"They asked about that. We were all going to go out for breakfast. We figured we'd feed the kids before we brought them home. If the rest of you want to come with us, that's fine. I'm going up to take a shower."
Olivia went upstairs to take a shower, while everyone else went into the kitchen.
"Olive!"
"Grandma Gloria and Grandpa Tom, it's good to see you. I am so sorry we never contacted you about Justin."
"That's ok. Like we told Hank, it works both ways."
"This is my husband Trevor Langan and our daughter Maggie. Trevor, these are Justin's grandparents, Tom and Gloria Martin."
"It's nice to meet you."
"You too."
"What do you do, Trevor?"
"I'm a lawyer. I've known Olivia for years. I used to be a Defense Attorney but now I deal with adoptions. I started with that around the time Olivia adopted Noah, so I helped her. I also helped her and Hank when they adopted Rachel."
"How old are they?"
"Noah will be 5 and Rachel will be 4. Olivia has had Noah since he was pretty little and Rachel came to live with us in January of last year."
"Wow! You're Diana, right?"
"Right."
"And this cannot be Kara."
"Yes, it is."
"That's not possible."
"I know. She is growing up so fast. Sweetie, do you remember Mr. and Mrs. Martin, Aunt Camille's parents?"
"Not really. Sorry."
"That's ok. She was what, 3 when Camille died?"
"Yep. This is my husband Ed Tucker and our son Brandon. Honey, this is Tom and Gloria Martin, Hank's former in-laws."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too."
"I'm going to go upstairs."
"I need to get the kids dressed anyway."
Olive took the kids upstairs and helped them get dressed, while Hank joined Olivia in the shower.
"Hey, beautiful."
"I don't think they like me."
"Since when do you care what anyone else thinks? I love you and that's all that matters."
Hank kissed Olivia and then they both finished in the shower. They went out to the bedroom and made sure the bedroom door was locked. They got on the bed and made love. They got dressed and then Olivia dried her hair. They went downstairs and then everyone went out for breakfast. When they got to the restaurant, they got seated, looked to see what they wanted to eat and had their order taken.
"Olivia, tell us about you."
"There isn't a whole lot to tell. I never had the best relationship with my mom and she was an alcoholic. I never knew my dad. I have an older half-sister and a younger half-brother from him though."
"Do you know either of them?"
"I know her a lot better than I know him and we're pretty close. He usually only contacts me when he wants something, mostly money. I haven't heard from him in years. Diana is my half-sister. My mother was raped and I am the result of that. Her alcoholism made her abusive."
"Wow! I can see why you chose to get into what you got into. It had to have been hard growing up in an environment like that."
"It was but our relationship was a little better by the time she died."
"How did she die?"
"She was coming out of a bar and fell down the subway stairs."
"How long have you and Diana known each other?"
"Just over a year and a half."
"Have you ever been married before?"
"No. It's something I have always wanted though. I didn't particularly like Hank when I met him when we first worked together but we grew to respect each other. By the 3rd time we worked together, he confessed to me that he had feelings for me but I responded by telling him that I was in a relationship with someone else. He did not take that very well. He wouldn't speak to me for 5 months. Once we got together, we've been inseparable."
"Are you close with your ex?"
"Yeah. I told him that I wasn't being honest with myself about my true feelings for Hank, so then I wasn't being honest with him. He and Hank get along pretty well and he's actually now my brother-in-law, so I'm glad for that."
"It's good that Hank was able to find love again. Camille was hoping he'd eventually find someone to make him happy. Olive, I'm glad you did too."
"Thank you. I will always love Justin but Trevor gave me a reason to smile again."
"He is a handsome one."
"Yes, he is. At first I was a little awkward with the age difference but one of my aunts and one of Trevor's stepsisters are both married to someone 20 years older than them and one of Trevor's friends is married to someone closer to my age."
"You need to do whatever makes you happy. You too, Hank."
"I have no regrets. Similar to Olive, I will always love Camille but Olivia gave me a reason to smile again. If I hadn't met Olivia, I don't think my life would be what it is now. I wouldn't have located here for just anyone and Olivia knows that."
"You're retired now?"
"Yep. I keep busy with the kids. They're both in Preschool. I also take care of Camille."
"What does Erin's husband do?"
"He's a cop. He was also in my unit in Chicago. Erin wanted to move here because the rest of the family was here, so they moved here earlier this year. Erin is in Olivia's unit. Olive and the kids lived with us until the beginning of this year."
"How did you manage with 5 kids?"
"It's not easy but we also have a nanny. Lucy also watches the daughter of two of Olivia's Detectives."
"So, Olive's kids aren't with you during the day?"
"Not as much. They have their own nanny and Olive's parents live not too far from them. Trevor's mother is living with them temporarily but she's recovering from knee surgery."
"She normally lives with my youngest stepsister and her husband but they both work in the Emergency Department at one of the local hospitals, so we said she could stay with us during her recovery."
"How's Katie's ankle?"
"It's still bothering her but she knows how to deal with it. She and Josh were over when we left to come over to your house. Josh has been great with Mom. He'll come over on his days off and take her to therapy. Katie stays with us and spends time with Maggie, so Olive can sleep and I can get some work done."
"Do you just have stepsiblings?"
"I do but we all get along pretty well. Rick is a firefighter in Chicago, Colleen is a nurse in Boston and Katie is a nurse here. I'm Uncle Trevor to all their kids. Katie got married a couple weeks after we did and they are expecting their first baby."
Trevor told Tom and Gloria what happened between him and his mom.
"That's terrible. Is this your first marriage?"
"It is. After what my stepdad did to me, I was hesitant about being in a serious relationship. I will admit that I had feelings for Olivia at one point but nothing ever came of that."
"Mommy, I have to go potty."
"Me too."
"Me too."
"Ok. Come on."
Olivia took Noah, Rachel and Daniel to the bathroom.
"She's a good lady, Hank. You're very lucky and we're happy you're so happy."
"Thanks. She was starting to feel that you didn't like her. Maybe because you're Camille's parents and you'd constantly be comparing her to Camille."
"We wouldn't but Judy no doubt would. She judges everyone and she was never a fan of yours or Justin's."
"The feeling was actually mutual. She and Camille weren't even that close."
"No, they weren't."
"As a joke, every year for their anniversary, I send Charlie a text extending my sympathies for another year of being married to her."
"I think the girls do too."
"My sister and I never had a good relationship until she lost her husband. We were close growing up but once she got married, she always thought she was so much better than me. She never liked Justin and she had said I was only with Trevor because he had money. She said I was also only living with Hank and Olivia because I wanted someone to help support me and the kids. None of that is true. My brothers and I worked things out first when they came to our wedding and then when we had gone to Indianapolis for my brother-in-law's services, my sister and I talked and worked everything out. She came out here for my baby shower and she's thinking about moving here as well. My parents and brothers and their families are all here now. One of my brothers works with Trevor. My sister is having a baby at the end of January, so she now understands what I was going through when I lost Justin and found out I was pregnant."
"How did your brother-in-law die?"
"He was in a car accident. My dad is a retired firefighter and one of his former co-workers, who is also a good friend of the family, came to tell her."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"Thanks."
Olivia and the kids came back just as the food was arriving. Everyone talked for a while and Hank invited Tom and Gloria to the party. They said they would be there, so they could see Erin. Once they finished breakfast, they all left. Al, Meredith, Trudy and Mouch took Tom and Gloria home and everyone else went over to Hank and Olivia's. By the time they got there, Erin, Jay and the rest of the group from Chicago were at the house.
"Hello."
"Hey. So, how did you end up seeing Tom and Gloria?"
"They live near Al and Meredith. They had gone to Chicago and found out about Justin that way. They saw Trudy at the cemetery leaving flowers at both graves."
"I guess none of us thought to call them."
"No and I do feel bad about it."
"I do too."
"They did say it works both ways."
"That's pretty much it."
"They asked if you were mine and I said you were. Gloria said Camille suspected it because you were so much like me but never said anything. I'm not sure how I could have been dumb enough to a) sleep with Bunny or b) not realize you were my kid."
"She could have done a lot worse as far as my dad is concerned. I don't blame you. I completely blame Bunny for everything."
"Where's Jay?"
"He's upstairs doing a video call with his dad. I talked to him for a few minutes and then I put her down for her nap."
Maggie started fussing, so Olive took her into the family room and fed her. Trevor went to check on her. The kids were there watching a movie.
"Time for your naps."
"No!"
"No nap, then no cake later."
Noah shut the movie off and then they all went upstairs. Brandon had already fallen asleep. Ed came in to the room.
"He's sleepin', huh?"
"Yep. I told ours specifically that they needed a nap or they wouldn't get any cake later. Noah and Rachel went too. How are things going with him?"
"They're good. He loves havin' a big family."
"Good. He seems like he's adjusting pretty well."
"It didn't take him too long. The first night he was with us when he spilled his milk, he thought someone was gonna to hit him. I assured him that nothing like that was ever gonna happen again."
"I still don't get how his prior foster family was even allowed to have kids when they were just abusing them."
"It makes me wonder too. Did the rest of the kids get placed?"
"As far as I know they did. Olivia might know."
Just then, Olivia walked in.
"Olivia night know what?"
"Did Brandon's foster siblings get placed?"
"They did and they are all doing great. Rachel adjusted pretty well to being with us and we haven't had any problems with her. I don't think she remembers a whole lot about what happened to her anyway. I wish we could take them all but unfortunately, we can't. I wouldn't do that to Hank for one nor would I do that to Lucy either."
"I never thought I'd be spending my retirement bein' a stay at home dad."
"I don't think I could have seen you doing that either."
"I love bein' a dad more than I thought I would."
"You were kind of awkward with Noah at the beginning but you seem to get along pretty well now."
"Like I said, dealin' with Kara was a little easier than dealin' with Noah. I do love havin' one of each though."
"This dad stuff is still pretty new to me too."
"You're both good dads."
"Thanks."
"Thanks."
They finished decorating for the party and then the others arrived. Hank introduced Tom and Gloria to everyone else and started the grill. Olivia showed Tom and Gloria the house and then they went back downstairs.
"Your home is beautiful."
"Thank you. We really love it here."
"Erin, she's beautiful."
"Thanks."
"So, you and your family live here?"
"For now. We're buying the place next door and once we close on it, we can move in. We're not in a hurry but we have our stuff in storage, so Jay wants to go get that and get it moved in before we do anything else. We've been saving up for a place and Dad watches her during the day, so we wanted something close by."
"That makes sense."
"It's nice to see you two and we're glad you could be here."
"We are too. We couldn't believe it when we found out that not only were Alvin and Meredith living in New York but so was Hank."
"I probably should have been the one to call you about Justin. Olive was a mess and Hank wasn't dealing with it either. I wasn't much better though. I was always so much closer to Justin than I was to Teddy, my half-brother from my mom."
"Like we told Hank and Olive, it works both ways. We didn't keep in touch with Hank after Camille's funeral. Is your mom still around?"
"No. She was killed last year. The guy she told me was my dad was the one that did it. Jay tested Jimmy's DNA to mine and it wasn't a match, so just to be funny, he thought he would test Hank's. Well, his matched and I am happy about that. Hank was always the closest I had to having a father and Camille loved me unconditionally."
"She did. I think she knew but she never said anything to Hank. I also think in his own way, Justin knew too."
"Oh, probably."
Once the food was done, the kids got their food first and then the adults got theirs. After everyone ate, Jay and Erin opened her presents and once that was done, everyone had cake.
"Hank, did you bake the cake?"
"No. Ed's sister Patty did."
"Hank, you bake?"
"Yeah. I never realized how much I enjoy it. Lucy our nanny taught me."
"He is quite good at it. He cooks and bakes."
"You don't?"
"I like to but I don't always have the time to do it."
"Ed, do you have a big family?"
"I'm the oldest of 6. I have 2 younger brothers, 3 younger sisters and tons of cousins. We're basically a typical Irish Catholic family except some of us don't go to church anymore."
"There's nothing wrong with that. For the longest time, I never went to church either but I started again after my daughter died."
"I kind of lost interest when I got older and after my divorce. My cousin is a priest and was involved in a sex scandal in the church a couple years ago but he actually tried puttin' the blame on me."
Ed told Tom and Gloria about what had happened.
"We're sorry you had to go through all that."
"Thanks."
"Are you liking New York, Diana?"
"I love it. Some days my job gets to me but transferring here introduced me to my sister and the love of my life. I also love being a mom of two now. Kara absolutely loves having a dad and she also loves that Hank really is her Uncle Hank."
"They always were close if I remember right."
"They were but she was also close with Camille."
"Camille loved everyone."
"I know she did."
"Your son seems like a little sweetheart."
"He is. He's had a rough life though. He was in foster care and the last place he was prior to being with us, he was being abused. When he first came to live with us, he spilled something and then ran and hid. He was obviously hit when that had happened before. Ed went after him and told him he would never have to worry about that ever again. The rest of the kids in the home have been placed elsewhere too."
"How did you end up with him?"
"We decided we wanted to foster a child with the possibility of adopting, so we filled out the paperwork. Olivia and Hank did that and ended up with Rachel. We had put Olivia and Hank down as references and his Case Worker was the same one that both Noah and Rachel had. She called us and said she was bringing him over and he's been with us ever since."
"I never realized how much I wanted to be a dad until I started seeing Olivia but even more so once I met Diana. My family adores both kids."
"What does everyone in your family do?"
"My parents have owned a Pub ever since I can remember. My siblings pretty much run it now but my parents are still pretty active in it. It was never my thing but we all worked there at some point. I'm the one that decided to be different from the rest of the family and did something else with my life. My oldest niece is the same way. She became a cop too. My sisters-in-law help out but my brothers-in-law all have jobs outside the family business. My youngest sister's husband works at the same place Olive does. The other two are firefighters. I grew up with my sister Patty's husband and he retired about the same time I did. Shauna, who's right over there, is my niece. Kelly and Connor are my youngest sister's kids. Kelly is Kara's best friend."
"Ok."
Ed's phone rang, so he answered it. Once he was done talking, he hung up.
"That was Patty. Pop fell, so their takin' him to the Emergency Room."
"Is he ok?"
"If you ask him, he'll say he is but he's had arthritis in his knee for years. He's a stubborn one anyway. He knee probably just gave out. Jack was there and Jason is on today, so he came with them when they responded."
"You're pretty stubborn yourself."
"We all are. I should probably head to the hospital. If you and the kids want to stay here, that's fine."
"I think I will because I'm pretty exhausted. There are plenty of people who can take us home."
"Ok. Ed went to talk to Shauna and Jeff and Kara, Brandon, Kelly and Connor. Brandon decided to stay with Diana but everyone else was going with Ed. Ed went to say goodbye to everyone and told Hank and Olivia that Diana and Brandon were staying. Olivia told him that if they needed anything else to let them know and he said he would. Everyone who was leaving got their jackets and headed to the hospital.
