Talking aloud to self
Phil Collins Singing
Back at the watering hole, Terk pulls a knocked out Tarzana to shore. Terk starts talking, voice filled with concern.
Terk: Tarzana, buddy, buddy, come on, don't die on me! Don't die on me! You weren't supposed to do it! It's my fault! Wake up!
Tears come to her eyes, as she begs to Tarzana to awake. She didn't want this to happen. All she wanted was to spend some time with her other friends and not have to keep Tarzana from hurting herself. Now it's her fault that Tarzana went after the elephant hair and got hurt. During her self-loathing Tantor comes running up to Terk.
Tantor: Get away from there! (He grabs Terk to protect her.) Don't you know a piranha can strip your flesh in seconds? (Terk struggles to free herself from Tantor's hold. She breaks free before yelling at him.)
Terk: What? She's not a piranha. She's... (Terk hears some coughing and notices it came from the previously unconscious girl. Terk is joyous that Tarzana is ok.) She's alive! She's alive! She's alive! (She hugs her cousin tightly.)
Tantor: She's alive!
Terk: She's ali- (She pauses and frowns in realization. She pushes the girl down.) You idiot! You nearly gave me a heart attack! I thought that you'd died! You happy?!
Tarzana: Uh-huh.
Tarzana holds up a single strand of elephant hair. Terk looks at the hair baffled. Her cousin managed to get the hair and keep it the entire time.
Terk: You-I don't believe it...you got the hair?
Tantor: Is that what this is all about? I got a whole tail of them!
Tantor swings his tiny tail showing of his own hairs. The group laughs for a moment before Terk decides introductions are due.
Terk: We'll my name is Terkina but call me Terk. (Terk grabs Tarzana again, before gesturing to her.) The idiot who almost died is my little cousin Tarzana.
Tarzana: Hey! I only went cause you told me to. (Tarzana exclaims slightly insulted. Terk rolls her eyes and ignores her cousin's remark.)
Terk: What's your name?
Tantor: Oh yeah! I'm Tantor. Nice to meet you two.
Tarzana: Nice to meet you as well Tantor. Do you want to be our friend?
Tantor: Yeah! But if you need any more hairs you should come to me.
Tantor swishes his tail back in forth to make his point. This causes the group laughs a bit, until a two voices interrupts them at the same time. The gorilla clan has made it to the watering hole. Kala is at the head of them with Zuri.
Kala's voice: Tarzana?
Zuri's voice: Terkina?
Tarzana and Terk: Oh, no...
Tantor: Who's that?
The two girls look at each other sheepishly and in fear.
Tarzana & Terk: My mom.
Just then, Kala runs up towards daughter relieved to find her not hurt. Zuri does the same to her daughter until Terk broke away to stand next to Tarzana.
Kala: Tarzana!
Tarzana looks up at her mother before responding sheepishly.
Tarzana: Hi.
Terk: Hi, Aunt Kala.
Kala picks up her daughter and hugs her close. She's relieved that her daughter was not injured. Kala then questions her daughter.
Kala: Oh, you scared me! What happened?
Terk gulps in worry. She knew that this was all her fault and that she should be punished.
Tarzana: Well, I...
Terk goes to explain what happened and how she set out the challenge for Tarzana but gets tongue-tied.
Terk: Um, it's sort of a long, it's involved, because what happened, it was a weird-
Kerchak appears from the jungle. His suspicions seem to be confirmed as his eyes set upon Tarzana.
Kerchak: What happened?!
Kerchak's serious tone made Terk yelp. Now she has to explain it to a very ticked off leader of the gorillas. Trying to help her cousin out, she sighs as she squirms out of Kala's arms. She decides to take the blame. Tarzana starts to walk up to him, apologetic.
Tarzana: It was my fault, Kerchak.
Kala: Tarzana!
Kala says surprised. She knew her daughter well but never expected this. When Tarzana would usually get herself into trouble either on her own or from Terk it was never because of something dangerous. She was always careful to make sure that whatever happened it only affected her. Tarzana keeps up the charade of explaining the situation.
Tarzana: We were playing and well, I'm sorry, Kerchak.
Tarzana touches Kerchak's hand gently trying to show how sorry she was. Kerchak moved his hand away from her. He yells at her in frustration.
Kerchak: You almost killed someone!
He looks at her sternly, as she backs up to be closer to her mom.
Tarzana: But it was an accident!
Kala wraps an arm around Tarzana as she starts to defend her daughter.
Kala: She's only a child.
Kerchak: That's no excuse, Kala! She causes trouble wherever she goes!
Kala: That's not true. She does play around but she is careful when she does so. Even then it's usually pranks!
Kerchak: It doesn't matter! She's a problem!
Kala: She needs more time!
Kerchak: You can't keep defending her!
Kala: But she'll learn!
Kerchak: She will never learn! You can't learn to be one of us!
Kala's voice rises with the amounting stress and frustration.
Kala: Because you never give her a chance!
Tarzana tucks herself against her mom who now is hugging her to her with both arms. A sadden look is splayed across Tarzana's face. She looks up as Kerchak speaks on in anger.
Kerchak: Give her a chance?! Kala, look at her! She will never be one of us!
Kala shouts at Kerchak in castration.
Kala: Kerchak!
Tarzana gasps in hurt with tears filling her eyes, she breaks away from the hug and runs away. Kala calls after her daughter.
Kala: Tarzana!
Both Kala and Kerchak watch as she runs off. Kala sighs in sadness and looks longingly in the direction her daughter went. Kerchak grunts at the girl's departure. She frowns at Kerchak for a second, before running after her daughter. The leader of the gorilla clan huffs and walks off.
Late that night, Tarzana is seen at a small wading pool area. Tarzana hugs herself as she sobs mournfully with tears cascading down her face. She looks at her reflection in the water and frowns, wiping the tears from her eyes.
Tarzana: Why can't I fit in like everyone else? Why am I so different than the other gorillas in the clan?
Her questions go unanswered. She doesn't realize that even though she lives with gorillas but doesn't look like one that she isn't a gorilla. No matter what she does, she causes problems and Kerchak will never accept her as his daughter. It upsets the poor girl. In aggravation she splashes the water a couple of times, growling in frustration. Mud then lands on her face causing her to grunt. She frowns and wipes off some of the mud. But after having a closer look at her reflection, she realizes she looks more like a gorilla with it on. She begins to get some more mud and begins to cover it all over herself.
She looks to the water again to see if she looks like a gorilla. Suddenly, she stops as Kala's reflection appears in the water instead. Kala softly questions her daughter.
Kala: Tarzana, what are you doing?
Hearing her mom's voice she turns around quickly, causing some mud to go flying, before walking over to her mom. Tarzana sighs in defeat.
Tarzana: Why am I so different?
Kala: Because you're covered with mud, that's why.
Kala starts to clean the mud off of her daughter with her arm. Tarzana goes to retort her response.
Tarzana: No! Kerchak said I didn't belong in the...
Kala: Close your mouth.
Tarzana stops speaking long enough for Kala to get the mud off her mouth. She then grabs her mom's hand to continue speaking.
Tarzana: ...Kerchak said I don't belong in the family.
Kala: Never mind what Kerchak said. He didn't mean anything.
Tarzana: But I know he doesn't want me as his daughter!
Kala: Now Tarzana that's not the case.
Tarzana: It is though! He doesn't want me. Doesn't want me calling him my father. He always looks down on me and doesn't love me. He thinks I'm just a problem.
Kala: Kerchak just has to be harder on you since you are our daughter. He just shows his love in other ways. You're not a problem. Ever. Now hold still.
She tries to get the rest of the mud off but Tarzana jerks away solemnly. Tears begin to form in her eyes as her voice tightens in frustration.
Tarzana: But look at me!
More of the mud falls of Tarzana by her sudden movement. Kala looks at her with nothing but love and sadness.
Kala: I am, Tarzana. (She continues to clean up Tarzana listing body parts as she cleans them.) And do you know what I see? I see two eyes, like mine, and a nose...somewhere. (Tarzana chuckles at her mother's antics.) Ahh, here! (She pokes Tarzana's nose, making her giggle.) Two ears... (Tarzana chuckles once more as Kala plays with her ears.) And let's see. What else?
Tarzana holds up her hands for the next example.
Tarzana: Two hands?
Kala: That's right. (She grins and places her hands against Tarzana's own hands. The girl frowns. The two's hands are different. She sighs as she looks at her hands mournfully. Her mother knows at once that the hands thing was a bad idea, but she has a brilliant idea.) Close your eyes. (Tarzana does so.) Now forget what you see, what do you feel? (She takes Tarzana's hand and puts it on her chest.)
Tarzana: My heart.
Kala: Come here.
Tarzana does so and puts her head on Kala's chest. She can hear something in there.
Kala: What do you hear?
Tarzana: Your heart.
Kala: See? They're exactly the same. (Tarzana hugs her mom tightly, a genuine smile on her face.) Kerchak just can't see that.
Tarzana then has an idea.
Tarzana: I'll make him see it. (She climbs onto Kala's back and pounds her chest like a gorilla.) I'll be the best ape ever!
Kala: Oh, I bet you will!
Kala grabs her from her back and starts to tickle her. The young girl laughs as her mother tickles her. A not so secret grin appears on the girls face. Perhaps someday, she can prove to Kerchak she does belong and that she is gorilla enough to be his daughter. That one day she can make him proud of her.
