One afternoon, classes at Hexside had just been dismissed, and Luz, Amity, and Hunter were all walking back towards the Owl House.
"Well guys, this is it", Luz said, "fall break."
"Yep", Amity said, "no school for four whole days."
"The perfect time to kick back, relax, and have a good time", Hunter said.
"You said it, Hunt", Luz said, "and I've got some pretty big plans for this break."
The three friends soon arrived at the Owl House, where Eda and Raine were waiting to greet them.
"Hey, kids", Eda said.
"Hi, Mom", Amity said.
"Hey, Eda", Luz said, "can I use your portal to the human realm, please?"
"Sure thing", Eda said.
She dug around in her hair for the key to the portal, and after finally finding it, handed it to Luz.
"Here you go", Eda said.
"Thank you", Luz said.
Luz pressed the button on the key and summoned the portal.
"I'd better get going", Luz said, "I don't want to keep Mom waiting too long."
"For what", Eda asked.
"Packing", Luz said, "me and Mom are going on a trip to see my Abuela tomorrow."
"That sounds nice", Amity said, "what's the occasion?"
"Thanksgiving", Luz said.
The Clawthorne-Whispers family was confused by the mention of the human holiday.
"What's that", Amity asked.
"It's a holiday we celebrate back in the human realm", Luz said, "as its name implies, it's all about families coming together to show how thankful they are for each other and stuff like that."
"Sounds like a pretty neat holiday", Hunter said.
"It is", Luz said, "the best part is that there's always a big Thanksgiving dinner."
Luz smiled happily as she thought about all the different foods that were served for Thanksgiving.
"Turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie", Luz said, "those feasts have it all."
Luz's mouth began to water, and Amity snapped her fingers to get Luz out of her trance.
"What", Luz asked, "oh, sorry, I guess I got a little lost in my fantasies."
"It's alright", Amity said.
"Well, I'd better get going", Luz said, "Mom and I need to start packing so we'll be ready to leave first thing tomorrow morning."
"Okay", Amity said, "when do you think you'll be back?"
"Probably the day after tomorrow", Luz said, "you know I can't stay away from this place for very long."
"Sounds good to me", Amity said.
"Until then, I'll be seeing you all", Luz said.
The Clawthorne-Whispers family bid Luz goodbye as she walked through the portal.
"Man, humans come up with some pretty creative holidays", Eda said.
"I agree", Raine said, "who knew there was an entire day dedicated to being thankful?"
"I didn't", Hunter said, "but it does sound kind of fun."
"It sure does", Amity said, "and I can't wait for Luz to tell us all about it when she gets back."
The next day, the Clawthorne-Whispers family were all sitting around the Owl House doing their own thing, with Amity working on a little art project up in her room.
"Just a little more", Amity said, "and, done!"
She finished her project, which was an image of her, Eda, Raine, and Hunter drawn together in the art style of The Good Witch Azura.
"It's so beautiful", Amity said, "me and my family in the style of one of the greatest books ever written."
She put the drawing in a page in a scrapbook next to an image she drew of her and Luz kissing in the same art style.
"There", Amity said, "now, what should I do now that I'm done with that?"
Amity put her hand on her chin and thought about what she could do, and she noticed the time on her alarm clock, which was 12:00.
"I wonder how Luz is doing at her grandmother's house", Amity said, "maybe I should give her a call to check on her."
Amity pulled out her cellphone, which had been given to her so she could stay in touch with Luz whenever she went to the human realm, and dialed her number, and after waiting for a minute, Luz answered.
"Hello", Luz asked.
"Hey, Luz", Amity said.
"Oh, hey Amity", Luz said.
"I just wanted to call to see how your Thanksgiving is going", Amity said.
"It could be better", Luz said.
"What do you mean by that", Amity asked.
"Abuela called us this morning and said she woke up really sick", Luz said, "Mom and I had to cancel our trip so we won't get sick like her."
"I see", Amity said.
"I've been looking forward to visiting Abuela all fall, and so was Mom", Luz said, "now we can't go see her."
"I'm so sorry, Luz", Amity said.
"It's alright", Luz said, "there's not much you could have done about this."
But Amity still wished there was something she could do about the matter.
"Well, I better go now", Luz said, "I'm spending the day with Mom so she's at least not alone today."
"Okay", Amity said, "will you be back tomorrow like you said you would?"
"Of course", Luz said, "and then, for the rest of fall break, I'm all yours."
"Sounds good", Amity said.
"Until then, my love", Luz said, "bye."
Luz hung up, and Amity began thinking about the Noceda family's failed Thanksgiving plans.
"I kind of wish there was a way I could make Luz and her mom feel better", Amity said, "but what could I do?"
Meanwhile, downstairs in the living room, Eda and Raine were playing a game of Hexes Hold'em, and Raine was getting ready to take their turn.
"Go ahead, Rainestorm", Eda said, "make your move."
"With pleasure", Raine said.
Raine set a card down on the table, and as Eda's cards went in to attack theirs, a small raincloud appeared over Eda's cards and began raining on them, and Raine played a wild card, which caused lightning to emit from the cloud and hit Eda's cards, turning them to ashes, and the words "Winner: Raine" appeared in flaming letters.
"Yes", Raine said, "I win again!"
"Aw man", Eda said, "that's the third game in a row I've lost to you."
"Face it, Eda", Raine said, "your little tricks to this game are old news to me."
"Don't get your hopes up", Eda said, "I'll reclaim my title eventually."
"We'll see", Raine said.
At that moment, Hunter walked downstairs with a magazine in his hand.
"Hey Mom, hey Baba", Hunter said.
"Hey, Hunter", Eda said, "what are you up to?"
"Oh, nothing", Hunter said, "just thought I'd do a little reading."
He sat down on a chair and opened up the magazine, but Eda and Raine were curious about what he was reading.
"What exactly is that", Raine asked.
"It's a magazine from the human realm", Hunter said, "it's got all this neat stuff about Thanksgiving."
"What kind of stuff", Eda asked.
"Mostly things like what people do on Thanksgiving day", Hunter said, "there's even a whole section dedicated to Thanksgiving dinner."
He showed them said section of the magazine, which had a picture of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner that spanned across two pages.
"Dang", Eda said, "that's quite the layout."
"I'll say", Raine said, "I don't think you can make food like this here in the Isles."
"No wonder humans love this holiday so much", Hunter said, "I bet a meal like this tastes delicious."
"You said it, Hunt", Eda said.
"You think we could make food that's at least similar to all this sometime", Hunter asked.
"Maybe", Eda said, "we'll just have to wait and see."
Just then, Amity came downstairs looking rather glum, which her family was quick to notice.
"Hey, Amity", Raine said, "you look a little down."
"Is everything alright", Eda asked.
Amity decided she might as well tell them about Luz.
"I just got off the phone with Luz", Amity said, "her grandmother's sick, so she and Camila can't go visit her for Thanksgiving."
The others were very sorry to hear that.
"Oh dear", Raine said, "that's awful."
"Luz sounded so excited to see her", Hunter said, "she must be really disappointed."
"She was", Amity said, "I could tell when I called her."
"Poor kid", Eda said.
"I wish I could try and cheer her and Camila up", Amity said, "but I don't know how."
"Maybe we could invite them here for dinner", Hunter said, "it probably won't be anything like Thanksgiving dinner, but maybe having dinner with us might cheer them up a little bit."
"Not a bad idea", Eda said.
Amity thought so too.
"Okay", Amity said, "let's give that a try."
Eda pulled out the key to her portal and summoned it for the family to go through.
"Come on, everyone", Eda said, "it's time to pay a visit to the Noceda residence."
The Clawthorne-Whispers family all went through the portal and walked over to Camila's house, where Amity knocked on the front door.
"Hello", Amity said, "guess who came to visit."
No one replied, so she knocked again.
"Luz", Amity said, "it's me, Amity."
Still, no one answered.
"That's strange", Amity said, "what's going on?"
"They might not be home", Raine said, "maybe we should come back later."
"I've got a better idea", Eda said.
Eda dug around in her hair and pulled out a spare key to the house, then used it to unlock the front door.
"There", Eda said, "now we can get in."
"Where did you get a key to Camila's house", Hunter asked.
"She gave it to me in case of emergencies", Eda said, "I'd say cheering up her and Luz counts as an emergency, don't you?"
"Sure, I guess so", Hunter said.
"Now come on", Eda said, "let's go see them."
And with that, the family went into the house to greet the Nocedas.
"Look who decided to drop by", Eda said, "the Clawthorne-Whispers family!"
But just like when Amity knocked on the door, no one replied, and the house seemed to be empty.
"Luz, Cam", Eda asked, "anyone home?"
"You were right, Baba", Amity said, "it looks like Luz and Camila aren't home."
"But where could they be", Hunter asked.
"I don't know", Raine said.
"Why don't we wait around in case they come back", Eda said.
But Luz and Camila's absence made an idea pop into Amity's mind.
"I think I've got a better idea", Amity said.
"What", Hunter asked.
"Instead of inviting Luz and her mom to our place for dinner", Amity said, "why don't we make dinner for them here?"
"You want to cook something for Luz and Camila", Eda asked.
"Yes", Amity said, "Thanksgiving dinner."
The others were surprised by what Amity was suggesting.
"You want us to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving dinner", Raine asked.
"That's right", Amity said, "then we can surprise Luz and her mom when they get back."
"I don't know if that's a good idea", Eda said, "a Thanksgiving dinner seems pretty hard to make."
"I'm sure it can't be that hard", Amity said, "we've got Hunter's magazine to help us figure everything out."
Hunter pulled his Thanksgiving magazine out of his pocket, and Amity walked over to a nearby bookshelf.
"And I'm sure Camila has a cookbook here that we can use", Amity said.
She looked through the shelf for a cookbook, and found one called "Holiday Eats."
"This looks about right", Amity said, "let's get cracking."
"I don't know, Mittens", Eda said, "are you sure we can pull off something like this?"
"Of course we can", Amity said, "what does your magazine say about Thanksgiving dinner, Hunter?"
Hunter opened his magazine and turned it to the section he had shown Eda and Raine earlier.
"Well, it says here that no Thanksgiving dinner is complete without a roast turkey", Hunter said.
"Alright, then", Amity said, "looks like we need to find a turkey for us to cook."
"I'll go into town and see if I can find one at the stores", Raine said.
"Thank you, Baba", Amity said, "and in the meantime, the rest of us will look around and see what there is here that we can include in the dinner."
"Okay", Eda said, "let's get cooking!"
Eda and the kids went into the kitchen to get to work, and Raine put on a winter hat with ear flaps to hide their pointed ears and left the house to go find a turkey.
"From what I can tell, the turkey is the centerpiece of the whole Thanksgiving meal", Raine said, "I sure hope I can find one."
They walked into town and looked around for a place they might find a turkey at, and soon found a place called "Alex's Butcher Shop."
"This place looks promising", Raine said.
They went inside the shop and rang the bell at the front desk, and the owner, Alex, came over to them.
"Hello, and welcome to Alex's butcher shop", Alex said, "how can I help you?"
"Hi", Raine said, "I was wondering if you have any turkeys here."
"Ooh", Alex said, "I was hoping you wouldn't ask for one of those."
"Why", Raine asked.
"Because we're all out of turkey", Alex said, "a bunch of other people bought every one that I had for their Thanksgiving dinner."
"Oh, I see", Raine said.
"We've got lots of chicken, though", Alex said, "how about some nice, roasted chicken for dinner?"
"Thanks anyways", Raine said, "but I think I'll just go."
Raine left the butcher shop and walked away down the sidewalk.
"Well, so much for that place", Raine said, "there must be another store I can get a turkey at."
They looked across the street and saw a small grocery store called "Budget Foods."
"Maybe they have something there", Raine said.
Raine walked across the street on the crosswalk to Budget Foods, went inside, and walked over to the meat department, where a female customer was walking away carrying a turkey.
"Hello", the lady at the front counter said, "how can I help you?"
"Hi", Raine said, "do you have any turkeys here?"
"Well, we did", the lady said, "but I'm afraid we're all out."
"What", Raine asked.
"We just sold our last turkey to the woman who was here before you", the lady said, "I'm terribly sorry."
Raine was disappointed that they had once again failed to find a Thanksgiving turkey.
"It's alright", Raine said, "I'll be on my way now."
"Oh, okay", the lady said, "I hope you still have a happy Thanksgiving."
"Thanks", Raine said.
Raine left the store and walked along through town again.
"I guess since it's Thanksgiving, everyone else wants to have a turkey for their dinner", Raine said, "this is going to be a lot harder than I thought."
Raine went to every shop they could find that they thought might have turkey, but the results were all the same: no turkey, much to their annoyance.
"I hope Eda and the kids are having better luck than I am here", Raine said.
Back at Camila's house, Amity had written down a list of food that would be served for dinner and was looking at it on a clipboard that said "Thanksgiving Dinner Checklist."
"I think that's everything", Amity said, "okay guys, let's get cooking."
Amity looked through the kitchen with Eda and Hunter for food, and the latter checked the pantry and found something that caught his eye.
"Well, what do we have here", Hunter asked.
He pulled out a can of jellied cranberry sauce.
"Hey, guys", Hunter said, "I found some cranberry sauce!"
"You did", Amity said, "great work, Hunter."
"And it's jellied, too", Hunter said, "according to my magazine, this kind is popular with a lot of people."
"That's nice", Amity said.
"Let's get that stuff out of the can and onto a plate", Eda said.
"You got it", Hunter said.
Hunter tried to open the can, but he couldn't quite do it.
"I just need to get it open first", Hunter said.
He tried again, but the can still wouldn't open.
"This thing's a bit tricky to open", Hunter said.
Hunter kept trying to get the can open, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get the lid off, and finally set it on the counter.
"Maybe there's a can opener somewhere that I can use to help get it open", Hunter said.
"Or you could let me help you", Eda said.
Eda made a spell circle that made the can levitate into the air, then used the same spell to remove the lid from the can.
"There you go", Eda said, "it helps when you've got family members who can use magic, doesn't it?"
"Yeah, I guess so", Hunter said.
"Now, let's get this sauce served", Eda said.
Eda turned the can upside-down using her spell so she could dump the cranberry sauce onto a plate, but it wouldn't come out.
"What's going on", Eda asked, "why isn't this thing coming out?"
She shook the can with her spell to get the sauce out of it, but it wouldn't budge.
"Come on", Eda said, "pour out already!"
Amity watched with concern as her mother shook the can.
"Mom, I don't think you should be doing that", Amity said, "maybe you should stop before you..."
But right at that moment, the cranberry sauce flew out of the can and all over Eda.
"...Make a mess", Amity said.
"Oops", Eda said.
And she let out a sheepish chuckle.
"Well, so much for the cranberry sauce", Amity said.
She looked at her checklist and drew a line through "cranberry sauce."
"Let's just keep looking for more stuff", Amity said.
Amity and Hunter resumed their searching, and before Eda joined them, she got some of the cranberry sauce on her finger and tasted it.
"Mmm", Eda said, "not bad."
Eda and the kids looked around for some more stuff for Thanksgiving dinner, and as they did so, Amity became curious about Raine's whereabouts.
"I wonder what's keeping Baba so long", Amity said, "I hope they managed to find a turkey."
It was then that Raine finally returned from their outing.
"There they are now", Eda said.
"Baba", Amity said, "how'd the turkey search go?"
"Horrible", Raine said, "I looked all over town, but they didn't have any turkey left at any of the places I went."
Amity was very upset to hear that.
"No turkey", Amity said, "great, now what are we going to do?"
"Don't worry", Eda said, "leave it to me."
Eda reached into her hair and pulled out a bag of bird seed, then went out to the backyard.
"Where's she going", Raine asked.
"Beats me", Amity said, "but I don't see how it's going to solve our turkey problem."
A gobbling sound could be heard from outside, followed by the sound of a spell of some kind being cast, much to the surprise of Raine and the kids, and Eda walked back inside carrying an uncooked turkey.
"Here you go", Eda said, "one fresh wild turkey."
The others were shocked by Eda killing a turkey.
"What", Eda asked, "what's everyone looking at me like that for?"
"Uh, nothing, Mom", Amity said, "why don't you go set that turkey in the kitchen so we can get started on it."
"Sure thing", Eda said.
Eda carried the turkey into the kitchen, and Amity looked at her checklist.
"Well, at least our turkey problem's solved", Amity said, "let's just get back to work on the dinner."
And with that, the family went into the kitchen to work on their Thanksgiving dinner for Luz and Camila, and Eda washed the turkey in the sink so she could start preparing it.
"There we go", Eda said, "nice and clean."
But when she picked it up out of the sink, it slipped out of her hands and fell onto the ground.
"Whoops", Eda said, "I guess it's still a little slippery."
She tried to pick the turkey up again, but once more, it slipped out of her hands and she dropped it.
"Stupid bird", Eda said.
Eda stepped towards the turkey to try and pick it up again, but she accidentally slipped on it and fell over, crashing into the pantry, and the turkey flew into the air and landed in a pan.
"Talk about a crash course in cooking", Eda said.
Amity heard the commotion and went over to Eda.
"Are you okay, Mom", Amity asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine", Eda said, "just had a little trouble with the turkey is all."
"Maybe I'd better take over on preparing the turkey", Amity said, "why don't you find something else on the list to take care of."
"Sure thing", Eda said.
Amity went over to the turkey to start working on it, and Eda began picking up the cans that had fallen out of the pantry, and she stumbled across a can of pumpkin puree and thought of something.
"Amity's checklist has pumpkin pie listed for dessert", Eda said, "maybe I'll help prepare that."
Eda went to start work on the pumpkin pie, and Hunter got ready to make some mashed potatoes.
"Okay", Hunter said, "let's get to mashing."
Hunter put a few potatoes he had peeled previously into a bowl, then, with a potato masher, crushed the potatoes down, but it proved to be a very slow process.
"Looks like this is going to be a pretty tough job", Hunter said, "I'd better kick it up a notch."
Hunter continued to mash the potatoes as hard as he could, and meanwhile, Raine noticed Eda working on the pumpkin pie and decided to check on her.
"Hey, Eda", Raine said, "what are you doing?"
"I'm making the pumpkin pie", Eda said.
Eda was doing that by pouring the pumpkin puree into some pre-made pie crust, much to Raine's concern.
"I'm not sure you're doing it quite right", Raine said, "maybe we should ask Amity if we can borrow the cookbook."
"It's not that hard, Raine", Eda said, "it's just pumpkin and pie crust."
But Raine wasn't so sure.
"If you say so", Raine said.
Back with Amity, she had just finished stuffing the turkey and was ready to bake it in the oven.
"And I think that's it", Amity said, "time to get this bird in the oven."
Amity opened up the oven and carried the turkey over to it in its pan, but when she tried to get it inside, it wouldn't fit.
"Hey, what gives", Amity asked.
She tried again, but the turkey still wouldn't get in the oven.
"Maybe I should try putting it in a little lower", Amity said.
Amity removed one of the oven's shelves and tried putting the turkey on the lower one, but even then it wouldn't fit.
"Come on", Amity said, "get in there!"
Eda and Raine noticed that their daughter was having trouble with the turkey, so they both went over to see if there was anything they could do to help her.
"Is everything alright, Mittens", Eda asked, "it looks like you're having a little trouble with the turkey."
"I am", Amity said, "it won't fit in the oven."
"Why don't you let us help you", Raine said, "I'm sure we can figure out a way to get it in there."
"Thanks", Amity said, "that would really be helpful."
"No problem", Eda said, "now, let's try and find a good angle to put it in at.
Amity positioned the turkey so she could put it in the oven, and Eda and Raine looked to see what the best way to put it in was.
"Just a little to the left", Eda said.
Amity moved the pan to the left of the oven.
"Now center it up a bit", Raine said.
Amity turned the pan so it was in a centered position.
"And I think that should do it", Eda said, "push that sucker in!"
Amity pushed the turkey into the oven, but just like before, it still wouldn't go in.
"It still won't fit", Amity said, "I think the turkey's too big."
"Or the oven's too small", Eda said.
"Why don't I help you get it in", Raine said, "I'm sure we can get in in together."
"Sure, we can do that", Amity said.
So, Raine grabbed onto the tray, and together, they and Amity tried to get the turkey into the over.
"Just a little more", Raine said, "we've almost got it in!"
But when Amity and Raine gave the turkey one last push, it was shot out of its pan and into the air, and Raine looked up to see it coming down towards them.
"Uh-oh", Raine said.
The turkey landed right over Raine's head, much to everyone's shock.
"Are you okay, Baba", Amity asked.
Raine's speech was muffled by the turkey, and they began walking around the kitchen, but because of the turkey, they couldn't see where they were going, and ended up knocking over a bunch of stuff and making a huge mess.
"Oh no", Amity said.
Hunter was still working on his mashed potatoes, when he noticed Raine walking by with the turkey over their head.
"Don't worry Baba", Hunter said, "I'll help you!"
Hunter ran over to Raine and grabbed the turkey, then began to pull.
"I can't get it off", Hunter said, "can I get some help here, please?"
"We're coming", Eda said.
Eda and Amity walked behind Raine and grabbed them by their back.
"Okay, on three, we all pull together", Eda said, "one, two, three!"
Hunter pulled the turkey, while Eda and Amity pulled Raine, and at last, they managed to get Raine free, but they ended up falling backwards and crashing into the counter, spilling Hunter's mashed potatoes.
"Well that was an interesting experience", Raine said.
The others went over to Raine to see if they were okay.
"Are you alright, Rainestorm", Eda asked.
"Considering that you guys helped get an uncooked turkey off of my head, yes, I'm doing fine", Raine said.
Eda held her hand out and helped Raine back up to their feet.
"Well, so much for cooking the turkey in the oven", Amity said.
"Yeah", Eda said, "but at least now it's free for the pumpkin pie."
Eda went and got her pie and brought it over to the oven.
"This thing should all baked and ready in no time", Eda said.
But Raine was still unsure about how Eda had prepared the pie.
"I don't know about this, Eda", Raine said, "I still fell like you missed some steps."
"I'll admit, it does look a little weird", Eda said, "but I bet it'll look better once it's all done."
"Well, as long as you know what you're doing", Raine said.
"Trust me, I do", Eda said.
And with that, Eda put the pie in the oven and set the timer for 40 minutes.
"There", Eda said, "in 40 minutes, we'll have a warm, yummy pie for dessert."
"Yes, but what about the main course", Amity asked, "how are we supposed to cook our turkey now?"
Hunter thought about the situation, and he soon remembered something.
"I think I know just the solution", Hunter said, "we can deep-fry the turkey."
"What", Amity asked.
"It said in my magazine that some families deep-fry their turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner", Hunter said, "maybe we could try doing that."
"Okay, sure", Amity said, "let's do that."
"But how are we going to do it", Raine asked.
"I saw a turkey fryer outside when I was in the backyard", Eda said, "we can use that."
"Excellent", Amity said, "let's get on it."
"Okay", Eda said, "I'll get to work on the turkey."
"And we'll help with the other stuff in here", Raine said.
"Alright", Amity said, "let's move, everyone!"
Eda picked up the turkey, which had landed on the counter by the oven, and carried it out to the backyard, not noticing that she had accidentally knocked over the timer, causing it to break, and Amity looked nervously at her clipboard.
"So far, we're not making much progress", Amity said, "I just hope we can at least get something done before Luz and Camila come back."
In the backyard, Eda managed to set up the turkey fryer and filled it with peanut oil.
"Okay, it looks like the oil's boiling", Eda said, "now let's see what the next step is."
Eda checked a piece of paper that had instructions for how to make a deep-fried turkey written on it for what to do next.
"Lower the turkey in the oil and let it sit for three to four minutes per pound", Eda said, "let's see, this turkey is about 25 pounds, so that means 75-100 minutes.
Eda picked the turkey up with a hook and gently lowered it into the fryer.
"There we go", Eda said, "now all I have to do is wait."
Eda stood by the fryer holding the turkey's hook, waiting patiently for it to finish frying, but it wasn't very eventful, and Eda was starting to feel a little bored.
"This gonna take a while", Eda said.
Back in the house, Amity and Raine were helping Hunter clean up his spilled mashed potatoes.
"Sorry about your potatoes, Hunter", Raine said.
"It's alright, accidents happen", Hunter said, "but it looks like I'm going to have to make a new batch."
Amity picked up some mashed potato and felt it in her hands, and she thought it felt weird.
"That's probably not a bad idea", Amity said, "these potatoes feel a little off."
"What do you mean", Hunter asked.
"I mean it's just pure, crushed-up potatoes", Amity said, "it doesn't look like you used any other ingredients when you made it."
"What other ingredients are there in mashed potatoes", Hunter asked.
"There's this recipe for Thanksgiving mashed potatoes in Holiday Eats that includes ingredients like butter and cream cheese", Amity said, "I think it's to give the potatoes more flavor."
"Oh, I didn't know that", Hunter said, "I thought it was just straight-up mashed potatoes."
"It's alright, son", Raine said, "we can make it the right way this time."
"That's right", Amity said, "I'll get some of the other ingredients from the fridge."
"And I'll help you prepare the potatoes", Raine said.
"Thanks, guys", Hunter said, "that's really helpful of you."
"That's what family's for", Raine said.
While Amity looked for the ingredients to make the mashed potatoes, Raine helped Hunter cut and boil some potatoes, and while they waited for them to dry, the three of them got to work on mixing the liquids.
"Okay", Amity said, "it says here in the book we need to mix together the melted butter, milk, and two tablespoons of sea salt."
Raine put the ingredients together in a measuring cup and mixed them together.
"Now what", Raine asked.
"Now we mash the potatoes", Amity said.
"I'm on it", Hunter said.
Hunter began mashing the potatoes, which was easier for him to do this time around since they had been cut and boiled, and Amity walked over with the melted butter mixture.
"Now we pour the mixture in and stir it", Amity said.
Amity started to pour the melted butter mixture into the bowl the potatoes were in, and as she did so, she smelled a burning smell.
"That's funny", Amity said, "do you guys smell something?"
Hunter and Raine sniffed the air, and they too smelled something burning.
"Yes, I smell it too", Hunter said, "it smells like something's burning."
"Agreed", Raine said, "but what?"
Then, they heard the smoke alarm and noticed smoke coming from the oven, much to their horror.
"Oh no", Raine said, "the pie!"
Raine quickly threw on some oven mitts, open the oven, and pulled out the pumpkin pie, which was now a charred, smoking mess.
"Look out, kids", Raine said.
Raine ran their way with the pie, and they quickly moved out of the way, with Amity accidentally dropping the measuring cup into the bowl of mashed potatoes, causing its contents to go everywhere.
"Clear a spot, quick", Raine said.
Thinking fast, Hunter pushed some stuff off the counter.
"There", Hunter said.
Raine dropped the pie down on its surface, and out in the backyard, Eda could hear all the commotion.
"What's going on in there", Eda asked.
Eda walked towards the house to see what was going on, leaving the turkey unattended as she did so, and when she went inside, she saw absolute chaos.
"Someone get a fire extinguisher, quick", Raine said.
"Don't worry, I'm on it", Eda said.
Eda dug around in her hair for a minute and pulled out a fire extinguisher, then used it to put out the pie.
"There", Eda said, "that's all taken care of."
"Yes", Hunter said, "but how did this even happen?"
Raine looked on the floor and noticed the broken timer by the oven and picked it up.
"Here's the problem", Raine said, "without our timer, we didn't know when to take the pie out, so it got burned."
Amity looked at the mess that was the kitchen, and she began to feel very upset.
"This is a disaster", Amity said, "we haven't even made half of the stuff on the list, and Camila's kitchen is a big mess."
"We're sorry, Amity", Eda said.
"I don't see how this could get any worse", Amity said.
Right at that moment, the family of witches heard a key in the front door, and Luz and Camila both entered the house, and when they saw the state of the kitchen, they were both shocked.
"Dio mio", Camila said.
"What happened", Luz asked.
"Uh, surprise", Eda said.
The Clawthorne-Whispers family stood there feeling a bit sheepish, and from the backyard, and explosion could be heard, and Eda knew what had caused it.
"Turkey's done", Eda said.
She then let out a nervous chuckle.
"Please don't be mad", Eda said.
"I'm trying not to", Camila said.
Hunter decided to say something to try and change everyone's moods.
"You know", Hunter said, "one day we're all going to look back on this day and laugh about it."
Camila responded by glaring angrily at him.
"Although, I guess today probably isn't that day", Hunter said.
"What exactly did you guys do here", Luz asked.
Amity decided it was time to come clean about her little plan.
"It was my idea, Luz", Amity said, "we were trying to surprise you and your mom."
"Surprise us", Luz asked.
"I felt sorry that you couldn't visit your grandmother for Thanksgiving, so I decided to make a Thanksgiving dinner for you guys", Amity said, "but instead, all we made was a mess."
Hearing Amity's explanation made Camila calm down, and she spoke kindly to the young witch.
"Amity", Camila said, "you did all this for us?"
"Yes", Amity said, "or at least we tried to."
"But it turns out Thanksgiving dinner is culinary rocket science", Eda said.
"I appreciate that you all tried to cheer us, but Thanksgiving is more than just eating turkey and pie", Camila said, "Thanksgiving's all about being together as a family and being thankful that we're together."
"That's right", Luz said, "I may not have gotten to see my abuela, but I'm thankful I was able to spend the day with my mom, and now I'm feeling thankful that I have a girlfriend and friends who were willing to go to great lengths to cheer us up."
"You really mean it", Amity asked.
"I do", Luz said, "thank you everyone, for your kind gesture."
Luz and Camila's words made the Clawthorne-Whispers family feel much better.
"Anything for you, Luz", Amity said.
"Well, we should probably be going now", Eda said, "I think we've made enough of a mess here today."
"Actually, I was wondering if you'd all like to join us for dinner", Camila said.
"And eat what", Hunter asked, "we made a big mess of your kitchen."
"That you did", Camila said, "however, me and Luz spent the afternoon shopping at the outlet mall, and while we were out, we got some takeout for dinner."
Luz went outside and came back in carrying some plastic bags containing food from a restaurant.
"It's not your traditional Thanksgiving dinner, but it's still pretty good", Camila said.
"Thanks, Cam", Eda said, "we'd be happy to join you, right, guys?"
"I'm in", Raine said.
"Me too", Hunter said.
"That sounds good", Amity said.
"Alright, then", Camila said, "I'll get out some extra plates."
In no time, the Clawthorne-Whispers family was sitting down at the dinner table with the Nocedas eating a delicious meal of hot wings.
"Mmm", Hunter said, "these wings are delicious."
"I'll say they are", Eda said, "and this buffalo sauce is delicious."
"I prefer the barbecue sauce", Raine said, "it's not as spicy."
"That's cool", Eda said.
Amity was feeling happy because even though her Thanksgiving plan didn't go the way she hoped it would, she was still sitting down at a table sharing a meal with the people she loved.
"You know", Amity said, "this was pretty good for my first time celebrating Thanksgiving."
"Same here", Hunter said, "we should do this every year."
"I agree", Luz said, "though, maybe don't make a mess in the kitchen again like you did this year."
"Fair enough", Eda said.
"Well, I hope you all had a good dinner, because it's time for dessert", Camila said.
Camila got up out of her seat and walked into the kitchen, then came back carrying a pumpkin pie.
"I saw this in a store and thought I'd get it", Camila said, "so we at least have a pie for Thanksgiving."
"That looks delicious", Raine said.
"I can't wait to try a slice of that", Eda said.
"Not so fast", Camila said, "no pie for you four until you clean up the mess you made in my kitchen."
"Yes ma'am", Amity said, "we're on it."
The Clawthorne-Whispers family got up from their seats, went into the kitchen, and got to work cleaning it.
"I'm sorry, everyone", Amity said, "this mess is pretty much my fault."
"It's fine, Mittens", Hunter said, "you were only wanting to do something nice."
"Yeah", Raine said, "besides, now we know more about what human foods we can't make."
"I just hope Camila won't be too mad when she looks in the backyard", Eda said.
But at that moment, Camila decided to go into the backyard to investigate the explosion she heard earlier, and when she saw what had happened, she let out a very loud response.
"Ay cielos", Camila said.
Eda let out a nervous chuckle.
"Happy Thanksgiving", Eda said.
