Watching the friendly nurse leave Jess looked down at the phone still vibrating and chiming with incoming messages. Tonight had been insane. The entire past 24 hours had been insane. What were the chances that out of all the possible candidates to become her guardian fate had allowed the mother of her new friend to be the one chosen. And she had seemed so friendly and concerned. Like she actually cared about Jess. Could she actually have managed to get assigned a DECENT guardian? Jess shook her head and turned to the slew of messages on her phone. She was a bit too muddled still to risk allowing herself to get her hopes up too high. Glancing down at her phone Jess smiled to see several messages from Dr. Deaton. Reading through them she was surprised to read that he had contacted the Auto Shop and let them know what was happening the night of the Incident. Telling them that Jess was too injured to work for a few weeks. He also mentioned that he had given her phone mumber to Scott when the young man had shown up at work and shared the news that Jess would be staying with the McCall family for the foreseeable future.
Snorting at the the way the Dr. had capitalized the word Incident Jess sent him a quick text thanking him for keeping her phone safe and for giving the guys at the Auto Shop a heads up about her being to injured to work for a while. She thanked him for giving her number to Scott as well. Saying that she hoped the young man decided to text her soon. Wrapping up the text with a question about how Anne and the other animals were doing at the clinic Jess sent the text to the Vet.
Scrolling down to the next bunch of texts all from the same unknown number she was pleased to see they were from Scott. He had sent a bunch of small short texts through out the night. The last coming just a few minutes before Jess turned on her phone. Scott had started by saying how sorry he was that she had been hurt. But then continued to say how happy he was that she would be joining the McCall family and promising to send her a lot of texts to keep her entertained while she was recuperating. Wiping at her suddenly moist eyes Jess continued reading the list of texts. A few were about patients at the clinic. A bunch waxed poetically about the beautiful Allison. One asked if he could give her number to one of his friends named Stiles who had heard about the accident and that she was joining the family and wanted to message her to help entertain her. Sending a quick text giving Scott permission to share her number Jess continued to read through the many texts he sent. Stopping only to add his contact info to her phone. The next few texts all required answer. They all had questions about patients at the clinic or had riddles for her to solve from Scott. Jess smiled seeing a text from Derek telling her he would be keeping an eye on her stuff from a distance until she was back on her feet. Jess smiled. He also sent a text telling her that her truck had been moved to the McCall house by Dr. Deaton and the keys put in the bedside table in her new room. A picture of the truck parked in the driveway of what what had assumed was the McCall house was attached to the text. A second picture showed a simple bedroom with an attached bathroom and 2 large windows with a note that the covered porch roof made it very easy for Derek to get to her if she every needed anything at night while she was recovering. Derek also mentioned that he had stopped to see his new little wolfy brother and asked him to keep an eye out on Jess when possible. Leaving Jess to wonder just who his new younger brother was. One last text from Derek said that he had taken the first aide bag with its bloody evidence and garbage and would get as much of the stuff cleaned up and sorted as he could before returning it to it's hiding place in the truck. Jess sent a response thanking him for everything and telling him to try and get some sleep if he could. A quick p.s. at the end of the text asked who this younger brother was. Saying she should know so she could introduce herself. Finally getting through the list of texts took a while and Jess was just settling down to try and sleep when her phone rang glancing at the screen Jess smiled then she saw that Scott was calling her.
"Hey Scott, how's it going?" Jess asked answering the phone.
"DEREK HALE IS YOUR BROTHER!?" Scott's shouted through the phone at her.
Blinking in confusion at the horror and shock in the boys voice Jess wondered just how Scott even knew Derek and why him being Jess's brother was such a shock to the boy. "Um...yes Scott, Derek Hale is my brother. Did you just hear that from your mom? He was here visiting me to make sure I was OK and had fallen asleep on the bed with me when she came in and told me that I would be staying with you guys. The way she was acting I think she would have tried to get him to move into the house with us if she had another bedroom."
"Wait! Are we talking about the same Derek Hale, dangerous, crazy, scary Derek Hale?" Scott asked sounding confused by the idea. "I didn't hear about it from my mom. Crazy Derek cornered me and told me he expected me to keep and eye on you and keep you safe or else." Scott grumbled.
Thinking over the texts she had gotten from Derek and the way Scott was talking Jess had a slightly horrible idea of just who Derek's new wolfy brother might be. Gulping loudly Jess spoke as quietly as she could into the phone. "Scott, how exactly do YOU know Derek?" Jess asked dreading the answer.
"Um...I don't. Not really. I've just run into him a few times around town. He is a seriously scary guy. Not sure I can believe that he was sleeping in your bed and making friends with my mom...you sure that isn't the Morphine talking?" Scott joked sounding nervous. "Um...I will text you tomorrow. I have to get off the phone so I can finish up some homework and go to sleep."Scott said in a rush. "Hope you feel better soon. Bye." Without waiting for a goodbye in response the phone call was ended.
Jess was just thinking she should call Derek to get an answer about weather the boy was a werewolf or not when the man sent her a text.
You already met my new wolfy brother and are going to be living with him. Be careful not to upset him if you are alone around him. Young wolves have a hard time controlling the change. You should make sure to carry some pepper spray with you at all times until I can train him to control it better. I will be staying close as much as possible to be ready to step in and keep him from hurting anyone or letting anyone figure out our secret. You moving in with the McCall's is actually kind of perfect. This way I can watch out for both of you at the same time. Now I have answered your question so I expect you to go to sleep. I told you to go to sleep when I left the hospital ages ago.
Shaking her head at the craziness that was her life Jess sent Derek a reply.
Scott looks like a harmless puppy to me. I will be sure to sleep with a rolled up newspaper under my pillow to punish him if he acts up.
Just kidding. Don't get mad. I will take your warning seriously and keep a mini can of pepper spray in my pocket at all times. I already normally do carry pepper spray around with me so it won't be hard to make sure I always have some with me. And you should go to bed yourself before you get any more grumpy. Poor Scott called me in a panic and couldn't believe that my wonderful brother Derek and his scary, crazy Derek were the same person. If you want the boy to think of you as an older brother and trust you to teach him you need to be less scary around him. So go to sleep and get some rest so you can be less grumpy next time you see him. Now I am putting my phone on silent and going to sleep you should do the same.
Putting her phone down Jess saw that it instantly lit up with a response. Sighing she grabbed the phone and opened the text from Derek.
Can't put it on silent. Need it to wake me up if you text me about needing something.
And it is hard to be grumpy around you and MUCH too easy to be grumpy around the stupid stuff that Scott is doing. Go to sleep. I will see you in the morning.
Slipping her phone under her pillow Jess settled down into the pillows feeling tired and a bit sore. Happy that the drugs seemed to finally be wearing off she closed her eyes and quickly drifted off to sleep. Her last thought was that this was the fastest that Family Drama had ever cropped up after she joined a new Foster Family.
