After Shikaoi had told Shikamaru, Sasuke, and Naruto, things did not in fact go back to normal as the three had thought would happen after getting the younger Nara to talk.
After finishing his mind boggling explanation, Shikaoi had drifted off to sleep as if he hadn't completely flipped their world upside down.
Shikamaru was still digesting the information that his little brother (twin) had relayed. Shikamaru doesn't care if Shikaoi isn't supposed to exist, because from where he was standing (laying down) he is luckier than the other Shikamaru. The other Shikamaru was unknowingly cursed to live a half life, and this Shikamaru is all the better for it. The older twin refused to let his brother have to deal with everything alone, because thanks to Shikaoi he has never had to be alone. Shikamaru could never in a million years imagine a world without his twin brother, but now that he knows that in another life he would have he would not let his brother face a war alone. They were twins, brothers, and no matter how troublesome he can sometimes be, Shikamaru loves his brother. 'What a drag,' he thinks tucking the covers tighter around the sleeping Shikaoi.
Naruto was a bit upset that the hokage hadn't told him about his parents, and had let the villagers treat him badly, but Shikaoi's explanation was so detailed that he understood his reasons. He resolved to ask Kurama (the kyubbi has a name!) about his parents, but first he needed to figure out a way to protect his precious people. He didn't completely understand everything Shikaoi had said, but he knew that he had been bearing this heavy burden alone for far too long. Naruto understood how that felt, and he refused to let his best friend down. If the bastard tried to go to a snake pedo he would kick his ass. Naruto was going to be hakage someday, and he refused to let his precious people down. Believe it!
Sasuke was not having a good time. Not only was Itachi innocent, but he had been ordered to massacare the clan because that old man (Danzo) had ordered his older brother to do so. And Itachi had done so to protect Sasuke. Itachi wants Sasuke to kill him. And apparently in the timeline that Shikaoi knows about he did. He abandoned his friends — no his brothers, and all for what? Power? Revenge? Against the person who loved him enough to kill their parents. His mother's last words were begging Itachi to watch over him — Sasuke. Itachi who even when dying by his little brother's protected Sasuke the only way he knew how. Itachi who manipulated him that night to trick him into growing stronger to protect himself. Strong enough to restore the honour of a clan of traitors. Not to mention the fact that the villagers were treating the son of their hero as a pariah. The same villagers who blamed his clan for the same kyubbi attack that killed his friends parents. The same attack where fake Madara (Obito — his cousin — Kakashi sensei's teammate) had been manipulated by a literal plant to release the Kyubbi on the leaf village. Orphaning his sensei's son, and dooming Naruto to a life of loneliness. The same Naruto he was supposed to try to kill — according to Itachi if he wants revenge. The same Naruto other him had nearly succeeded in killing in the other timeline. But, he already unlocked the mangekyo, and he didn't want to kill his older brother. He also didn't want to lose his little brothers, and that's exactly what Naruto and Shikaoi were to him now. He didn't care if Shikaoi wasn't supposed to exist. He would protect the three boys around him with all he had. Even if Shikamaru isn't his teammate he is his brother's twin and that made him his brother as well.
Sasuke pulled the now snoring Naruto into his arms. The blonde's breathing served to ground the last loyal (not as loyal as Itachi) Uchiha. He glanced to the other bed watching as the elder Nara twin seemed to be strategising, as the younger slept blissfully. Sasuke held Naruto tighter and as he drifted off he wondered what they would all do with this new information.
