The Beginning
Chapter 3
After Pogue fell asleep, I stayed awake. Partly because I didn't want the nightmares or another dark king, the other being I couldn't fall asleep even curled up to Pogue. The next morning we got up, got dressed, and Pogue drove us to school in the car. We sat beside each other in English. Even though I was a year behind everyone by age, I was in all senior Honor classes.
"You could've skipped. Gotten some more sleep." Pogue told me.
"I'm fine. Really." I told him. He nodded and pulled out his books. I watched Caleb as he entered the classroom. He walked up and sat beside Pogue. I shut my books and got up. Pogue grabbed my hand.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"To sit somewhere else." I said pulling my hand away. I looked at Caleb and walked off. I sat beside Chase. He smiled brightly at me. I felt uneasy but I still smiled back.
"Bella, right? Calebs sister?" He asked.
"Unfortunately, yes." I said sighing.
"Ouch. Aren't siblings suppose to be like best friends?" He said laughing. I shrugged and glanced at Caleb.
"We were at one point. But we've gotten older and grown apart I guess." I said. I pulled out my pen and got my notebook ready. The teacher walked in then.
"Mr. Danvers. Provost Higgins requests the pleasure of your attention after class." The teacher said. I looked fully at my brother.
"Saint Caleb, not so saintly no more, are we?" I said smirking. Caleb glared at me while everyone else laughed.
"Miss Danvers, your comments are not necessary. Now, we are going to study four American contemporary writers of fiction. Cormack McCarthy, then Tim O'Brien, Kent Haruf, and last but not least, Stephen King." The teacher said writing on the board.
"Yeah. Dream Catcher was the shit." Reid commented. We all laughed again.
"Thank you, Mr. Garwin, but no. My choice is The Shining." He said nodding. Class went on slowly like everything else. I was in the library looking for a book when I saw Sarah looking at the history of Ipswich. I walked over and dropped my books in front of her. She jumped hard and gasped.
"Looking into my family history, are we?" I asked her.
"Yeah. I uh. I just wanted to know more about everyone." She said clearing her throat. I hummed and nodded.
"Ask my brother, he can give you more details and facts. Books lie a lot. All fiction." I told her. She nodded and closed the book.
"Thanks. I. I'll do that." She said nodding. I leaned forward on my books.
"Good. Wouldn't want your mind to wander in a different direction." I said picking it up. I grabbed my books and walked away. I checked out the books I had and went down the hall. I stopped and leaned against the wall as a massive headache hit. I groaned and closed my eyes. Then I felt the burning of someone using on me.
"Bella? Bella?" I heard beside me. I opened my eyes and saw Kate.
"Kate." I mumbled. The headache got more intense. I dropped my books and slid to my knees as I grabbed my head.
"Bella? Someone help!" Kate cried out. I flashed my eyes and fought back the power being used. Then I heard an angry growl, then it was gone. I felt something warm on my nose.
"Oh god. Blood." Kate gasped. Then it went dark. When I woke up, I was in the infirmary. I looked around, groaned and grabbed my head. I jumped when I felt a cold hand on my head.
"It's okay, honey." The nurse told me. I sighed and sat up slowly.
"Why am I here?" I asked sighing again.
"You passed out in the hallway. Miss Tunney, told us that you had an massive headache and a bloody nose. Do those happen often?" She said grabbing her pen.
"Just recently. The nose bleeds are new." I mumbled.
"Well, I'm going to send you home with your brother. He's already been contacted and is waiting with the Miss Tunney outside. He's also been informed to follow up with your family doctor. Remember, when you get home, rest and take some pain relief for the headaches." She told me.
"Thanks. We'll get right on that." I mumbled. She hummed. I got off the bed and leaned against it. Things spun at first.
"Dizzy?" She asked. I shook my head no and walked to the door. I walked out and looked at everyone. Caleb stood up with them. I looked at him then at Kate as she hugged me.
"Are you okay?" She asked me.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine." I said nodding.
"What did nurse Ratchet say?" Reid asked.
"To go home and rest." I said sighing.
"Come on, Ill drive you home." Caleb said reaching for me. I stepped away from him.
"No thanks. I have a ride home." I told him. He sighed and rubbed his face.
"Bella." He started.
"Caleb, don't. Come on, Bells. I'll drop you off and come back." Pogue said grabbing my arm. He and I walked off to the parking lot. He drove us to his place and walked me up. We walked in and he went to change clothes. I sat on the couch and sighed.
"You okay by yourself for a few hours?" He asked coming out. I nodded.
"Ill be fine. Go be with Kate and don't let your jealousy overcome you." I told him. He nodded, kissed my cheek and left. I got up and went to shower. I got dressed for bed and laid down to do my homework. A few hours later when the rain started and I heard the door slam. I got up and went to the bedroom door. Pogue threw his helmet down and yanked off his jacket.
"Hey." I said. He looked at me and sighed.
"Hey. I'm not in the mood to talk, okay?" He said throwing his hands out. I nodded.
'Pizza will be here shortly." I told him. He nodded and walked off into his room. We ate that night and went to bed. The dream I had felt to real. I felt the burning again. It started from the tips of my fingers to all over my body. The old Putnam Barn was on fire. I had on a blood stained red dress. I could hear someone crying. Then I felt a more powerful burn.
"No!" I screamed out as it rose in my body.
"NO!" I yelled as I woke up. I shot up in bed and screamed again when I saw the darkling standing at the end of my bed. He reached out and disappeared. I got up and ran to the door. It swung open and I screamed again as all I saw was a dark figure.
"Hey! Hey! It's me! Hey!" Pogue said wrapping me in his arms. I started crying and hugging him back.
"I want it to stop! I want it to stop." I cried to him. He hushed me softly as we walked to his room. I stayed awake all night again. Pogue and I got dressed again for school the next morning. The day was slow as usual. I was on my way to biology when Chase stopped me.
"Hey, Bella. Umm, I was wondering, if you, uh. Heh. If you'd like to go on a date with me soon?" He asked grinning. His grin sent the bad vibe goosebumps up my arms.
"I'm sorry, Chase. I don't date my brothers friends. Pogue was different but now I make it a rule not to date them." I told him.
"Dang. Would've been awesome dating the hottest girl in school." He said sighing. He emphasized the word hottest. Then he walked off. I sighed and walked on. Halfway during the period something happened. I felt power being used, my head hurt, and all I saw was Caleb sinking in the pool. I jumped when Kate touched my hand. She motioned to my nose. I touched it and saw the blood. She and I got excused and walked out.
"You okay?" She asked when we stepped into the bathroom.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I said wiping my nose.
"Bella, I'm worried. Things are acting very strange lately and I don't like it." She said crossing her arms. I tossed the tissues I had and washed my hands. Once I dried them, I grabbed her hand.
"Kate all will be fine, soon. Trust me." I told her. She nodded. We walked out and she went to her next class. I went to wait outside the pool for the guys. Once they came out, I grabbed Caleb's arm and dragged him into a classroom.
"What the hell happened in there?" I growled at him.
"What are you talking about?" He asked.
"Did the blow to the head make you forget what the hell just happened? Or are you acting dumb?" I snapped.
"You felt it? Like with my car?" He asked worriedly.
"Yes! Yes, I felt it! I also got bruises from your little fight with Reid too, if you want know!" I said huffing. He sighed and rubbed his face.
"I'm sorry." He told me.
"I don't want your apologies, Caleb! I want to know what the hell is going on!" I snapped.
"I don't know. But I'm finding out tonight." He said walking off. I growled in frustration and followed after him. The next day we were all in English class. I was sitting next to Pogue who was next to Caleb.
"The view of Civil Liberties needing no special protection was not widely shared." The teacher said. Someone knocked on the door.
"Come in. Thank you. Twelve amendments were suggested, 10 eventually ratified. Called what, Ms. Snider?" He said. Tracy had walked in and handed the teacher a note.
"The Bill of Rights." Kira answered.
"Right you are. Arguably, the first being the most important. Read it for us, Mr. Simms." He said. Tyler huffed and opened his book.
"Mr. Collins, you're wanted in the Provosts office." The teacher said. Chase got up, headed for the door. He looked back at Caleb and gave a small smirk as he left. A few minutes passed, I got excused out for the bathroom but I followed Chase. I watched Chase walk in and shut the door. One thing I sort of liked about my powers, was the super hearing I had.
"You know one of our students lost his life a few nights ago at the Dells." Provost said.
"Yes, I heard." Chase said.
"Did you know him?" He asked.
"No, sir. Why?" Chase asked.
"His car was returned to his parents. His mother was kind enough to send this back to us." He said. What was he handing him.
"My student ID. I lost it that night." Chase chuckled.
"It was in the backseat." Higgins told him.
"That's odd. I wonder how he got it. Thank you, sir." Chase said. My body got nervy again.
"You're welcome. I understand you have become close with Caleb, his sister, and their friends." Higgins said.
"Yeah. They're great guys, sir. I'm warming up to the sister, she's tough to crack." Chase said laughing. I gagged at that.
"She'll come around. You couldn't have picked a better bunch." Higgins said approvingly.
"I think so too." Chase said. There goes the nervy feeling, again. I went back to class before he realized I was there. What was Chase planning? Who was he?
AN: Question!
