HIRO
"No!"
I lunge forward and catch the back of Tadashi's shirt as I lock my legs around the railing. I expect Tadashi to simply pull me in with him, but adrenaline is a powerful thing, and I manage to hold on. I gasp as I feel a sharp pain in my back—I think I pulled a muscle—but I don't let go.
"Hiro!" Honey steps toward the edge of the bridge and I feel her hand on the back of my hood. "Hold on!"
I try to, but Tadashi is twice my weight, and gravity is not helping. My hold on the railing breaks and Honey's scream is swallowed as we plummet toward the ocean.
TADASHI
As we hit the water, I feel Obake's hold on my mind break. I suddenly become conscious of the fact that I am going to drown and Hiro is going to drown and skies is that Honey Lemon and I just jumped off a bridge.
Hiro's head smacks into the side of the bridge and he goes limp. Honey throws one of her chem balls, pushing Hiro to the surface, then swims toward me. Honey has smaller lungs than me, so I grab her hand and start to swim upward.
Almost there, my brain insists as I struggle for air, Almost…
We break the surface and I gasp for air. Honey throws another chem ball, one that pushes us us to the bridge. Hiro is on the ground, limp.
"Hiro!" I scramble over to him and check his pulse. I can feel a heartbeat, but he's not breathing—probably inhaled a ton of water. I place my hands on his chest and start doing compressions.
After a minute that feels like an eternity, Hiro coughs and opens his eyes. He sits up and as soon as he can breathe properly, I throw my arms around him. I can't believe we're alive.
"Are you normal now?" Hiro mumbles.
"I'm fine," I say. He raises an eyebrow and I add, "For real this time."
"Good."
"Tadashi." Honey Lemon's voice comes from behind me and I stand up. "We need to get that chip out of your head before Obake wakes up."
I tilt my head. "How?"
She shrugs.
"I have just the thing," Wasabi says excitedly. He reaches into the motorcycle's storage and pulls out—
"A surgical kit?" Hiro says skeptically. "You need serious help."
"Hey, I come prepared."
Honey reaches into the kit and takes out a few things—numbing agent, scalpel, forceps, bacitracin, gauze, and medical tape. I blanch as soon as she pulls out the scalpel.
"Is this going to hurt?" I ask shakily, aware of how childish it sounds.
"It shouldn't," Honey replies, which doesn't exactly reassure me.
"Should I be sitting down for this?" I ask Honey as Wasabi sterilizes the scalpel and forceps.
"You could," she says with a shrug. "It doesn't really matter. But it'd be easier on me if you stayed up."
"Okay." I shove my hands in my pockets. "Just get it over with."
Honey rubs the numbing agent on my temple and takes the scalpel from Wasabi. Her other hand squeezes mine.
"You can do it," she whispers.
"I'll take your word for it," I reply.
I bite my tongue to keep from crying out as Honey cuts into my head. I'd rather have her do it than anyone else, though. Hiro would probably kill me by accident, Fred might kill me semi-maybe-on purpose, and Wasabi would take hours, if not days.
I feel blood trickling down the side of my face—a lot more than I would like. Head wounds bleed a lot in general, but I'm still kind of concerned about the amount of vital fluids I'm losing.
"Almost got it," Honey mumbles. "Forceps, please."
I fail to stifle a yelp as she digs around for the chip.
"I'm sorry!" Honey whispers. "Almost done…and…got it!"
She pulls out a small silicon chip and flicks it into the ocean. Wasabi takes the bloodstained scalpel and forceps and starts re-sterilizing them while Honey stitches up the cut in my head.
Hiro stands up gingerly, rubbing his back and wincing. He doesn't look too good. He's still coughing a little, his cheek is starting to bruise, and the side of his head is swelling up.
"Hiro," I ask, "what happened to your face?"
He rubs his cheek. "I banged my head on the bridge. And I think I pulled a muscle while I was saving your life."
"What about your cheek?"
He pretends not to hear me, staring at the ground.
"Hiro!"
He hesitates, then mumbles, "You…slapped me."
I feel the color drain from my face. "I did what?"
"It's okay, Tadashi, you weren't yourself…"
I turn away, almost contemplating jumping off the bridge again.
Hiro's hand lands on my shoulder and I slowly turn around.
"It's not your fault," he says. "It's Obake's."
He jerks his head at Obake's unconscious figure on the ground. I take a deep breath and nod. "You're right. Let's go home."
