PAST LIVES

"Do you have an appointment?" The man at the desk glanced up at the outlandishly dressed individual before him.

"Sorry?" He seemed distracted, searching every corner of the room.

"An appointment!"

"Ah. No, I'm just looking for my friend. Bright girl - you'd like her." Then he remembered his manners. "I'm the Doctor, by the way."

"Doctor? Is someone ill?"

The Doctor was staring out of a nearby window. "Not as far as I know."

The man was becoming exasperated. "Then why . . .?"

"Oh, it's just a title I use," he smiled. "Seems to have stuck with me."

"How fascinating - look, wherever your friend is, I can assure you she isn't here."

"Perhaps you're right," the Doctor cheerfully conceded. He stepped back from the window and looked at the man properly for the first time. Then he stared. "Excuse me, but have we met before?"

After vainly trying to continue with his work, the man threw his pen on the desk, giving up. "I think I would have remembered an outfit as . . . distinctive as that," he sighed.

"Thank you for the compliment," the Doctor smiled. "Even so, you do look familiar, Mr . . ."

"The name is on the door." He returned to his work. "You'll see it as you leave."

"Ah." The Doctor took the hint. "I suppose I do have a habit of barging in where I'm not wanted. Sorry to have troubled you." There was no reply. "Yes, I'll just . . ." He turned and left.

As he closed the door behind him, his eyes were drawn to the legend printed on the square of frosted glass:-

Hammond Transport Services
Managing Director: Paul Merroney

The Doctor shook his head. "I'm sure I've heard that name before . . ."

EXPLANATORY NOTE: For anyone who doesn't know, Paul Merroney was a JR type character from BBC drama series 'The Brothers'. This was the role Colin Baker was identified with long before 'Doctor Who'.
