Disclaimer: I don't own Neon Genesis Evangelion, the original storyline,
any of the characters, none of it. I am not making a profit off of this in
any way and this is only for entertainment purposes.
Note: The title was inspired by Enrique Iglesias' song titled "Sad Eyes", which I do not own.
Sad Eyes
The door opened. A familiar man distinguished with a coat and small, clear glasses entered. Behind those glasses I sensed sad eyes. I looked up. He approached the bed and I waited for him to speak.
"Rei." His voice...it was strangely entrancing... "are you recovering properly?"
"Yes, I should be able to go back to school in a few days," I answered. He hesitated to answer.
"Good. You're sleeping well, aren't you?" he asked, no hint of concern blended in his voice. I smiled inwardly.
"Yes, I am. Is the Eva ready to be piloted again?" I asked him, waiting for his answer.
"The repairs have been finished, and the Eva is ready to be piloted the next time it is needed," he replied. I looked down at the wrinkled covers I sat under.
"Yes." He did not speak for several moments.
"Rei, why do you pilot the Eva 0?" his voice asked me with a genuine wonderment. I paused for a moment. I knew, didn't I?
"Because, Dr. Ikari, I have faith in your work," I replied, looking him in the face. "I know that I am doing something good. And...I am proud to pilot your work," I told him. His face showed no difference in expression, not that I needed one, but his sad eyes flashed. A short silence settled around us and I became aware of the cicadas chirping in a drone outside.
"...You are quite a good pilot." His response seemed almost awkward like something else should have followed it. "Well, get better soon, so you can...pilot the Eva...again," he sighed. He turned to leave and I watched his back for a moment.
"Wait! Dr. Ikari!" I called. He stopped and turned to face me once again. Our eyes met and I saw his sadness behind his dark orbs, that pain.
"Yes, Rei? What is it?" he said, his voice not betraying him. At his words, I forgot what I had wanted to say and I couldn't find my words.
"Dr. Ikari, y- you're very strong," I said. He paused for a moment.
"Thank you, Rei," he finally said. I was unsure of what he was thanking me for but I smiled anyway.
"You're welcome, sir," I said. His eyes flashed again with some indecipherable sadness. What caused him such pain, I wondered. I saw his eyes focus on something and he came closer. He examined a bandage on my forehead.
"Your bandage needs to be changed," he mentioned. He opened the drawer of a small desk close to my bed. He pulled out a unbloodied, clean bandage and some medical tape. He set them on the desk and walked over to me. Gingerly he removed the old bandage from my forehead and threw it away in a nearby waste bin. As his hands brushed my forehead as he removed the bandage, I concentrated on the touch and the feeling of his fingers. He taped the new bandage to my forehead over my healing wound and stepped back.
"Thank you, sir. The nurse would've done it..." I drifted off. His sad eyes suddenly flickered and they looked almost content for a moment. I smiled.
"I'm leaving, Rei. I'll come and check up on you again later tonight," he said and stepped out of the room while I listed to his footsteps fade down the hall. I would wait for tonight when he would come back.

Ahh... That was just a one shot I wrote, and I'm happy with the results. Review, please.
