Alex smiled as he sang along to the music playing on the radio in his car. He was on his way to work and he was happy. At last. He had finally found a new job, which he liked and in which he felt happy and comfortable.

He didn't think he would ever get to this point. When he had to leave surgery he was devastated. He had never wanted to do anything else. He had lived to be a surgeon. It was all he had ever wanted to do, and when he realised that he couldn't do it anymore, he didn't know what he was meant to do with himself. Nothing else had mattered to him apart from surgery. Nothing else seemed important and he wasn't prepared to spend his days doing a job that he believed was pointless, and couldn't be bothered to do. But that had changed. He had found a new job that he loved almost as much as surgery. A few months ago he hadn't thought that was possible. But now, he had made new friends and he had a new life.

He missed his old life, of course he did. It had been apart of him for so many years. It was what he was. A surgeon. But now he had learned to live with it. He accepted it. He had learned to love a new life. A life in which he worked respectable hours!! And while he had moments of jealously, knowing that all of his old friends were still doing the job that they had always wanted to do, he coped with it.

The only thing that got to him every so often was not seeing the one person that he missed most in the world. Diane. He longed to see her again. To hear her laugh. Hear her smile. But he knew that wasn't a possibility. It was a bad idea. Just in-case the reality of what he was missing out on - not only the job, but her as well - caught up with him. He knew that he wouldn't be able to deal with that. He had thought about calling her a couple of times. He still had her number on speed dial. He couldn't face deleting it, even though it was unlikely he would ever actually call her. But it was still there. Just in-case. She would most likely be with someone else anyway. Ric most probably. It was obvious he had always had a thing for her. And Alex had a new admirer now. A girl named Jane. He had been out for a drink with her a couple of times, but he had a feeling that she was more interested in him than he was in her. She was nice enough, but just not Diane. Maybe he would see her one day, he thought.
