Prologue
Katie Giles sat by the window of the American Airlines passenger jet. She clutched the handles of the seat with white fingered hands, yet gazed out the window in excitement.
She turned to the bleached-blonde guy beside her and said, "Brian! Can you believe this? I'm riding on a plane! We're going to L.A.! This is so amazing."
Brian, her boyfriend, leaned over and gave her a quick kiss. "Yes, sweetheart. We're going to L.A. and you're taking your first plane ride." he replied.
Suddenly, a strawberry-blonde twenty something walked up in front of Katie and Brian's first class seats and tapped her foot impatiently.
Katie looked up at her through her lashes, feigning innocence. She knew exactly what her best friend was about to say.
As the girl leaned over and began to pry Katie's hands from the armrests, she exclaimed, "I still cannot believe this. You are twenty-one years old." she stopped, pushed Brian out of the seat and collapsed into it, gasping from the effort it had taken to unclench Katie's hands. Then she continued, ignoring the pleading look Katie was giving to Brian. "I'm the same age you are, Katie, but I've been riding on planes since I was four years old! How did you go twenty-one years without going on a plane?"
"Sterling!" Katie began, exasperated. "This is the twentieth time you've asked me that today. I've told you and told you: My mother and father were both scared to death of them after Grandmother Abigail died in a plane crash. The only reason I even agreed to get on one now was because you and Brian said there was no other way you were going to drive to L.A. with me."
Sterling didn't have a chance to respond. While they had been arguing the plane had been filling up. Now the captain said over the intercom, "Would everyone please take their seats and buckle up as we prepare for takeoff."
Brian, realizing that Sterling intending to sit by Katie, took the window seat behind Katie, so that he would still be able to talk to the girls.
Fifteen minutes later they were in the air, headed for what they thought would be a relatively fun year of chasing their dreams in the City of Angles. They had no idea that it wouldn't be fun and games for very long...
