To Be Dudley

Sometimes as I wonder when I read the Harry Potter books what exactly is going on in Dudley's head, this is a segment of what I hope to perceive if I ever did take the spiteful journey to the mind of a small minded boy who knows nothing but of what his father tells him.

Some people may see Dudley as a spoiled and obese child who can come to know good, some see him as the selfish prig that he is but the question I hope to answer is can you blame him.

He has been raised with absolutely no boundaries been set to teach him the limits of his small existence. When he does something wrong nothing is done about it, he may even be praised for it. 'That's my boy' his father will say, his mother will coddle him and give him everything that he wants or asks for. This has been going on for his whole life- it is all that he knows.

It has been said that 'children are the maps of their parents' and I believe to a certain extent this is true. In many cases if a father beats his wife in front of their children and treats them badly in other ways that child will see this behaviour as natural and acceptable. So in this particular matter in the Dursley household if Veron treats Harry and all wizards badly Dudley is been set an example that enables him to cast off his feeling of inferiority about what he his for although at home the truth of his true and horrible nature it can not be fully hidden in the world beyond '4 Privet Drive'.

At school Dudley is a bully who likes to control everyone to fit his needs so he can keep the feeling and presence of been superior to everyone and shaping then to his will. In the first book Harry says no one will befriend him because Dudley has warned them against it (whether by fair or fowl means), is this so Dudley can rid himself of the threat of people one day realizing he holds no power over them.

Veron is shaping the boy to become a small (or huge) replica to keep his own personal blend of bigotry and mean temperament for the next generation.
