Promises

Though he would never admit it, Borus Redrum was a hopeless romantic. He would do anything to please Lady Chris, and he always delivered what he promised threefold. Despite being a veteran of two wars, his idealisms remained intact.

One of his many core beliefs was the importance of love (which further backs up the point of his romantic ideals). He never told her 'I love you' frivolously. The words meant so much when they escaped his lips, causing her more pleasure than she could put to words.

Though times had been difficult she enjoyed those few hours in which they had time to themselves. Very much was required of her, (paperwork, advice, leadership, and compassion to name a few) that she had little time to spend with her lover. Despite relishing this very fact, each minute together mattered all the more.

He had promised her so much with the intent to do each thing. He promised that in these cold winter months they could sit before the fire and drink cocoa like children do. He swore to spend New Year's night with her, and make sure that the upcoming year would surpass the current one. He said he would teach her to skate, and to catch her if and when she fell. They were to do all these things in that small castle by the ocean, where no one would speak of scandal or ask any questions.

So many rules had been put against her that it at many points it seemed impossible to continue their relationship. If the council knew, she would have to surrender her position. If the world knew that she had dared to defy the decree of her country she was as good as useless to her people.

And how Lady Chris feared being unable to protect those of Zexen.

But being with Sir Redrum mattered just a little more to her. She herself was not a romantic, but with him there seemed to be more than love, more than physical pleasures. Something indefinable that felt good.

On this cold night, she lied there with him, comfortable and warm. Tomorrow would be the day he was to return to Zexen. No reasons were given, though the two knights of course assumed the worst. No word was sent to her, though, which seemed suspicious in and of itself.

The lights continued to dim as the evening progressed. He stared down at her through the darkness as she rested silently beside him, her head on his chest. As he traced his hand lightly along her face, she returned his pleased glance.

"I love you, Chris," he murmured softly in a low voice.

The promises didn't matter and the threatening times were meaningless. The room was silent and calm, the cold air stagnant, the red embers making his sweat appear a shade of faded vermillion. His hazel eyes revealed the lingering pain despite the smile that lined his lips.

She closed her eyes.

"I love you, too."

And the last candle burned out.

Ta da. This was rather simple. Oh, it's based on the relationship between Chris and Borus on the SCB role play site. Hope you liked it.

eh, I fixed this a little since I initially posted. It needed a quick runthrew, which I forgot to do. Heh heh.
