She dreams in black and white because every time she goes to sleep, she fools herself into thinking he can't seep into her dreams. She doesn't want to shoot him, because he's simply not there. She doesn't need to silence the screams of the victims in her ears, because she just can't hear them. There is no Jack, no murders, no VCTF, no fear.

And then she wakes up from another nightmare, and curses the fact that she's been so naïve.

Instead, she dreams in black and white to hold what little she has of herself, together. What Jack hasn't stripped of her-what she hasn't buried deep within herself. But she wakes up every night feeling as if a part of her is gone. And she finds herself mumbling, "I'm slipping slowly away," before she rolls over and tries to sleep again.

So ultimately, Sam dreams in black and white because it keeps the lines that Jack blurred for her out of her nightmares.

At least that's how it's supposed to be. But when it comes to her life, nothing's ever how it's supposed to be.
