Chapter 1 – Where did I go wrong?
It's 7am on Saturday 14th February, Valentines Day. Rory is sitting on her bed, flipping through a photo album. There are photos of her and Dean together, than on the very last page there's only one photo of Jess.
Lorelai comes into the room wearing a deep purple, sequined dress. In her right hand is a black, satin purse and in her left hand is a deep purple, sequined purse.
"Which one do you think I should take?" She asks Rory.
Rory looks up and says, "The black." Than continues looking at her photos.
Lorelai sits on the bed next to Rory and looks at the photos.
"You miss him, don't you?" Lorelai asks.
Rory nods, a tear running down her cheek. She closes the photo album, gets up and puts it back on the bookshelf.
"Sweetie, if you feel this way about him, you need to tell him. Maybe he feels the same about you." Lorelai says.
"I-I can't." Rory replies.
"Why can't you? There's no-one stopping you!"
"Yes there is. Dean's girlfriend. He's taken, and that's what's stopping me. Otherwise I would have done it ages ago." Rory looks at her feet.
"It's never stopped you before."
Rory looks up at her mum and studies her face. She thinks for a moment, than nods and runs out of the room.
"Good luck!" Lorelai calls after her.
Rory runs out of the house, her heart beating fast and her stomach full of giant butterflies. She smiles to herself as she runs. Suddenly, she stops and stares at the park. There sitting on one of the wooden benches is Dean and his girlfriend, Lindsay.
"Come on Rory, you can do it." She says to herself.
Rory casually walks over to Dean. Dean looks up and sees her, a look that says 'what-do-you-think-you're-doing' appears on his face. Rory gulps, ignores the face and keeps walking.
"Hi Dean! Hi Lindsay..." Rory says.
Lindsay just sits there and says nothing.
"Rory, uhh, what are you doing here?" Dean asks.
"I need to talk to you." Rory says casually.
"Now isn't a good time, as you can see I'm very busy."
"I need to talk now Dean."
Dean looks at her, a frown coming across his face. Rory's heart beats faster and harder, the butterflies fluttering vigorously. He sighs, stands up and grabs her roughly on the arm, leading her over to a tree.
"Ok, now what do you want." He asks.
"I want to talk about us." She says.
"What do you mean us? There is no us. There's you and Jess and there's me and Lindsay."
"And that's what I'm here to talk about. I've, uhh, wanted it to be you and me..."
Dean looks at her, burning holes in her eyes. He looks up at the sky, sighs and looks back at her.
"Rory, you can't do this to me."
"Why can't I? I'm really sorry, but I thought you would want the same."
"Rory, I'm with Lindsay, ok? That's something you're going to have to live with. You left me at the ball and I haven't looked back since. You can't take me back whenever you want. Did you ever think about me? How I would feel? Or did you think I'd still be begging for you to take me back?"
"Dean, I-"
"No, Rory. Don't say anything. It'll just make things worse."
Dean walks back to Lindsay, leaving Rory standing there. Rory turns around, trying to fight back the tears, and walks home. Dean watches her walk away, again.
"What was that about?" Lindsay asks.
"Oh, nothing." Dean says.
