Chapter 13:

I wanted to scream, but I held it in. Gunn hadn't found me yet, the growl he boomed over the cathedral's walls all the evidence I needed. I knew what I had to do and the first thing was to uncurl myself from my fetal position. I wanted to cry, and I will never admit this to ANYONE ELSE, but I wanted to sob into anyone's arms, even Terry's.

The crunch of boots got closer and my heart streaked into my head. I licked my lips, which I couldn't feel anymore, and took in a steady breath which felt like liquid ice in my lungs. I just hoped I didn't have a funeral to go to in the morning, namely mine.

My hand slid out from my hiding place, trying not to attract attention. I didn't need them to see where I was, quite yet. My fingers twisted around one of the tall candelabras that were in between the rows of pews. I held on tightly, not letting go. I sucked in another long breath, but breathing wasn't getting any easier. It felt like I was drowning.

The boots clicked, and I knew he was right on top of me. I looked up into the mask, mustering a look of pure rage and determination.

"Hello, Jase." His slick voice made my skin crawl off my bones.

I was one told that every human has a set of animalistic instincts, we just never use them. In this case, I'd say HELL NO! I definitely used mine that night.

I smiled back at Gunn. "Yeah, I bet you're hoping I'm going to do one of to things: comply or shrink back into a fetal position. Well I got information for you, you obtuse, trigger happy, sadistic, imperceptive, punk! I always choose C on my multiple choice questions. So here it is:"

I took the candelabra in my hand, took out his guns, while he was still figuring out if I had insulted him. I stood as he looked me on, stunned at what I had just done. Wrong move, for him. I slammed the candelabra into his foot, wincing at the sound of metal and the whack of bone. I didn't hesitate, and slammed the it again into his skull the pain knocking him out.

I didn't have any time to react to the next attack. Tazor launched a ball of electricity into my shoulder and I dropped. I knew he would find me and shock the hell out of me, literally! I had to move or die!

I crawled through the pews, hearing him run through them, and the occasional explosion of a pew that got in his way. He was still a good five yards away from me, but I knew I had to think of something quick! I looked to my left and saw the marble staircase that led (I hoped!) to the towers. I knew I was taking a risk, if I didn't run quickly enough and reach them in time, he'd have me. I inhaled, not seeing another way out, closed my eyes at another blam as a pew exploded, know I would be next, and ran blindly to the stairs.

I didn't open my eyes when the first blast zipped by my neck, making the hairs stand on end. I didn't look when another pew was blasted to atoms, a couple of splinters sent at my neck. I didn't even open them when I tripped on the first step of smooth glassy granite.

I knew if I did, I'd freeze!

I dashed up the stairs, my white hands in front of my body, shaking and stretched into claws.

I nearly screamed when I hit the door of the bell tower. Oh God! I opened my eyes. Shit, it can't be locked, please, for the love of…

It was locked, tight. There was no key, and I didn't have anything to pick the lock. I was screwed, completely and utterly, damned.

Put white roses on my tombstone, will ya?
