She woke slowly, a smile on her face that broadened when she noted the reverent way his hand rested just below the curve of her breast, a gentleman even in sleep.
He had been the first beside Grissom to make her welcome on the night shift. It had been hard, those early days, being on the outside of the circle of friends. He had understood as an outsider himself.
He flirted outrageously and she returned the favor. He was cute, after all, in that Peter Pan never-grow-up sort of way.
As she became one of the team, their friendship was no longer the only thing she treasured about working the night shift in Sin City. She sometimes fell into the trap of treating him badly at work, but would make it up to him at their weekly beer and gabfests. He understood her dedication to the victims like not even her mentor could.
On rare occasions, others would be included in their weekly meetings, but never lasted for long, running from the pair's obvious connection.
Their friendship had only recently taken this turn. He had proved a tender lover, worshipping every inch of her body. And though she had known she could trust him, she had been pleasantly surprised that nothing had changed at work and that he had not even told his best friend the new status their relationship had attained.
His arm tightened fractionally around her and he pressed a kiss to the back of her neck. "Sara?" he mumbled, his voice slightly gritty before his morning coffee.
She rolled over to run her fingers through his spiky hairy. "Yeah?"
"Go to my high school reunion with me next month?"
She is strangely warmed by his unquestioning belief that they will still be together. "Sure, Greg. But why? We haven't been together that long."
His answer, when it comes, is still burred with sleep. "Because sometimes the geek does get the girl."
She laughs aloud and kisses him, absently wondering if maybe next year he'll return the favor.
