In response to the 500 word Mulder's gift to Scully for her Birthday Challenge for MSR Preservation Society.
"Hey, Scully, know what today is?"
"Um, I think it's Monday. In fact I know it is. I had to hold my gun to my head to get myself out of bed this morning."
"I meant the date, Scully."
"Check the calendar." Scully said, distractedly, her gaze never leaving her computer monitor.
Mulder sighed. She'd mentioned once that he never remembered her birthday. Well, it seemed *she'd* forgotten it this year. Score one for the home team, he thought.
"Oh, yeah. It's the 23rd."
Scully didn't react.
"February 23rd, Scully. Does that mean anything to you?"
He smiled when her head shot up. "Oh, my God! I can't believe I forgot! I have a dentist appointment at 11:30."
Mulder's shocked expression was priceless. "Mulder, you remembered my birthday." Scull said with a smile that lit up the room.
"I never forget, I just don't always mention it. Besides, I can't seem to find the perfect gift each year."
"So, you'd rather let me think you forgot instead of wishing me a happy birthday without a gift in hand?" Scully wasn't sure about this line of logic, but this was Mulder, after all.
"Well, I want your special day to be...well, special. And the right gift is important." Mulder mumbled while he studied the wall over her left shoulder.
"Mulder, just having you acknowledge today is gift enough. It means a lot to me that you remembered. All that stuff about gifts...well, as my Grandma Scully would have said 'Pishposh'."
"Well, I guess you don't want this." He said, pulling an envelope out of his jacket pocket.
Scully gave him a huge smile, "I didn't say that I was opposed to gifts, just that I didn't expect one."
Mulder's laughter filled the room. "I thought so." He walked across the small office and handed her the envelope, "Here ya go, Birthday Girl. Enjoy."
He stepped back and watched her read the contents of the envelope. Several times. God, he hoped that this was the right thing to do. He wanted to give her something special, but was this enough?
"Mulder, I don't understand."
"What's wrong, are my conjugational skills lacking? I thought I spelled it out clearly. It's a personal gift certificate. We're taking the rest of the day off and you have me at your disposal until midnight tonight. Anything you want, it's yours for the asking."
Scully cocked her head to the side. "So, if I told you I wanted my living room rearranged, you'd help me?"
He shook his head. "Nope, I'd do it for you."
"What about a movie and pizza?"
"We can do that. Anything you want, it's yours."
"Anything?" She prayed he couldn't read her mind. Her dirty mind.
Mulder couldn't resist temptation. "Agent Scully, why are you blushing?"
"Well, I wouldn't be opposed to a little birthday snuggling." she said, not quite meeting his eyes.
"Sounds like a date, Scully." He said, giving her the first of what he hoped were many birthday hugs.
