Heero took a deep breath, and exhaled slowly, trying to gather his usually ever-present courage. *I can do this,* he told himself. *It's just one little question.* He took another deep breath. *One question. Right.*

Slowly, he raised a loose fist up to the door before him, and before he could lose his resolve tapped lightly on the door three times.

It was only a moment before the door swung open, with an angel standing in the entrance way. At least, /angel/ was the best description Heero could think of for Duo. The young soldier's breath stopped in his throat as he saw what he deemed as his salvation looking at him with glowing eyes and a bright smile.

"Heero.... M'lord!" Duo dipped into a low bow all of a sudden, as if just remembering propriety.

The soldier opened his mouth to say something - /anything/ - but before he could get any words out Prince Quatre moved into view behind Duo. Duo then seemingly slithered into the background so that he was not in between the two older men.

"Heero!" Quatre greeted warmly. "Hello! Is there anything I can do for you?" A gentle smile spreading slowly threatened to split the young Prince's face.

"I... uh...." He stopped and took another breath. Quatre's smile became even larger, if possible.

"I... came to ask you a question," he finally got out, and he lowered his eyes so he could stop watching that smile of Quatre's, being in such a fit over Heero's own nervousness. If anything, that thrice-damned smile was making him even more nervous!

"Go on." Quatre was in great delight over this. He knew /exactly/ what Heero was about to ask, but took great enjoyment in watching such a usually silent soldier struggle so much for words.

Heero swallowed the lump in his throat. This wasn't supposed to be so difficult! Still, he wanted this, badly, and for once in his life he was going to do his best to get what /he/ wanted.

"I... I have come to ask if I may... if I might court Duo." He raised his eyes again, and the prince could see the hope shining in them. Quatre inclined his head in a sagely manner, though the wide grin he was still wearing lessened the effect. Not that Heero noticed. Behind the prince, Duo's eyes had widened to the size of saucers, a happy smile cracking his own face in two. He looked up at Heero and locked eyes onto the captain's face, hoping beyond hope that Prince Quatre would agree to Heero's request.

"Well, Heero," the prince began, "you have asked a very important question. And I'm afraid-"

Heero's and Duo's hearts both sank.

"-that this question should rather be asked of Duo himself."

Well, that was certainly a surprise.

Heero stood stunned for a moment, looking at the prince in silence as Quatre backed away, that silly smile still stuck on his lips. Finally, Heero slid his gaze to his love, Duo, and saw that the young man seemed to be strung as tight as a bowstring, waiting in expectation. Heero took another calming breath.

"Duo-"

He didn't even get to finish. He was too distracted by the warm bundle of angelic beauty and witty intelligence that had launched itself into his arms. That, and soft, warm lips had covered his own, effectively silencing him.

Heero had never thought that his first kiss would be so sweet.
