Light and Dark

Disclaimer: I don't own Yu-Gi-Oh. In the second-to-last stanza, I borrow two lines from "Ashita Moshi Kimi Ga Kowaretemo," the ending theme to the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh. I'm not sure of the translation, but it still sounds nice. Enjoy.

(Anzu Mazaki's POV:)

There is a boy.
He is a close friend of mine,
And he always has been.
But now I can't understand him.

/ Light /
His name is Yugi Mutou.
He is a nice boy, but very shy.
He doesn't have many friends,
But the few he does have are very close.

/ Dark /
Yugi has a nameless darker side.
He seems more forbidding and sadistic.
He is nothing like Yugi.
Yet, in a way, he really cares for Yugi.

They share the same existence,
They share the same mind,
They are like one,
But I still knew they were different.

I've known Yugi since childhood,
But I've just met the dark "Yugi."
I don't understand Yugi anymore.
Sometimes I can't tell the light from the dark.

But we are all friends.
Yugi is kind, but withdrawn,
And the dark "Yugi" is more collected and calm.
Yugi is much stronger than he seems,
And the dark "Yugi" is there to help him.

At first, the dark "Yugi" was cold and distant.
He pulled himself away when someone got too close.
Finally he allowed me inside his shell,
And I saw his kind heart,
Made stronger by the bonds of friendship we share.
But he can be easily hurt,
Just like Yugi.

But even if you're broken tomorrow,
I won't run away.
I'll stick by your side,
And help heal your wounded heart.

I may not fully understand you anymore,
But that doesn't matter to me.
Your light, and your darkness…
We're all friends.
We're all bond together by the threads of our strong friendship.
And that is what is most important to me.
