What if god was one of us.
If God had a name, what would it be? And would you call it to his face, if you were faced with Him in all His glory? What would you ask if you had just one question? Yeah, yeah, God is great Yeah yeah God is good...
Hawkeye had an idea what he would ask God. Why let this go on, why let young men die? PLINK he pulled shrapnel from and 18-year-old's chest. Why have people kill each other? PLINK. Why let this damn war even start? PLINK PLINK. His thoughts became more rapid, as he thought everything over.
What if God was one of us? Just a slob like all of us? Just a stranger on the bus, trying to make His way home. If God had a face, what would it look like? And would you want to see, if seeing meant that you would have to believe, in things like heaven and in Jesus and the Saints and all the Prophets. Yeah Yeah God is great Yeah Yeah God is good...
Hawkeye didn't know whether or not he believed in everything. Believing in heaven made him feel a little better to know that maybe his mom and Henry and his old friend were happy. But he wasn't sure he wanted to put more faith in something that might not be true.
What if God was one of us? Just a slob like all of us? Just a stranger on the bus, trying to make His way home. Just trying to make his way home, back up to heaven all alone, Nobody calling on the phone, Cept for the Pop maybe in Rome.
Of course, he didn't really blame God. Hawkeye figured that mankind was responsible for most of it. Even an all knowing all seeing being, no matter what name, must have limitations. What if God was one of us? He wondered. Finishing up his soldier and glancing around the OR, Hawkeye realized something.
"Maybe God is all of us," He said quietly
"What was that Doctor?" asked his nurse.
"Nothing," said Hawkeye "or maybe something."
