New Windows

Lay down

Your sweet and weary head

The shopping's over

You have come to journey's end

Sleep now

Dream – there are bells inside your mind

The phone is ringing

So you run to catch the line

A voice says "Hold please"

Swiftly you grow still more annoyed

Bad music is played

To fill the silence of the void

Safe in your hands

The phone soon starts speaking –

"What can you see

Through your old windows?

Is double glazing yours?

For quite low fees,

We will replace them.

We'll send a team

On Friday at two."

And so they come

And change the glass

In all of your windows

While hours pass.

Hope fades

When they produce the bill

The price is rising

And it is growing still

They say

They will wait a week or more

For their payment

Until they call the law

The bill is safe in your hands –

They're shaking.

What can you see

Through your new windows?

Why do the salesmen call?

You pay the fee –

They asked for double.

You have to sell

Most all of your things.

You sit at home

Now stony broke

The sight of your windows

Makes you choke

On all your food.
