Eva's challenge
Chapter 1: Goodbye
"You understand your mission?"
"Yes sir!" Eva replied.
Lydecker nodded and left the barrack, leaving Eva in a doubtful situation. The others were out in the woods, training of course but this morning she was ordered to stay behind. She'd waited and eventually Lydecker turned out to have a mission for her. She was afraid, she wished she could ask Zack for help, but he wasn't around so she had to do it herself. 'I'm a soldier, I can do this...' Eva whispered to herself. Finally, Eva decided to get some rest before she was ordered to leave and go. But it didn't matter how hard she tried; she couldn't sleep.
The mission was to infiltrate in a hospital in Portland, her target was a man with a daughter of her age and Eva was ordered to take him out. So she would leave before the others would return, to Portland, pretending to be a sick child too in order to meet her target.
After half an hour, Eva heard Lydecker coming... She swallowed once but didn't blink when he entered the barrack. "Time to go." His words were cold and icy.
Eva saluted and replied; "Yes sir."
Lydecker suddenly turned his body towards Eva and said; "No sir when we're leaving the Manticore grounds, understood? I'll drop you and you'll go to the ER like I told you, if you're doing well they will hospitalize you and you'll end up in the girls room. Her father will visit her as often as he can and it's up to you to get to know everything you can about him."
Eva nodded and swallowed the words 'yes sir' before making a mistake again. She wasn't up to blown this mission up; she was ready for it and she wanted to succeed. Slightly she peeked to her empty bed and she hoped that Lydecker hadn't seen it but she was too late; he shouted, "Eyes front, soldier!"
Immediately Eva stretches her shoulders and turned her head straight forward. In silence they left the building and while Lydecker drove to Portland, Eva's thoughts were drifting away to her siblings in the woods. How much did she wish she was with them right now; yes the training was boring but this was worse... She needed the others to feel safe. Together they could achieve anything but now she had to do it alone. For the first time, Eva felt fear.
Of course, Eva was briefed about the mission very well; she knew what a 'father' was and that she wasn't a daughter really, she had to pretend to be an orphan. But during this briefing Eva began to wonder about her and her siblings; did they have a 'father' too? She guessed Lydecker was her father. Suddenly a wave of bravery overwhelmed Eva and she asked; "Are you my 'father', sir?"
Lydecker's eyes didn't abandoned the road but his body language changed. Eva wasn't sure what she had done but for the first time ever she saw Lydecker smiling. "Yes, I'm your father. I'm everyone's father." But soon Lydecker switched back and his old appearance came forward.
Eva learned another thing though she wasn't sure how important it was. But apparently there were more like her and her siblings...
