My first Naruto fanfic... wow. Um, I feel like I should say something, but I
really can't think of anything! Obviously, given the summary, this is about
Haku and so, it's AU. I haven't seen any episodes past 19 actually, so if I
get something wrong please tell me- but be nice! I really wish my DivX
player hadn't just stopped working like that, though... Then I'd be all cool
and I'd know who Gaara is and Itachi and all of these people who I see
mentioned from time to time, but have no idea as to who they actually are
-_-;; I'd look, but I don't want spoilers ^_^;;
~Prologue~
The Wave Country was so small it only had one cemetery. It was located on a hill which overlooked the town, and it was at the very edge that two small, unmarked and unexceptional graves were to be found. No one ever visited the two, even though they were the newest additions to the place. They had been foreigners, only buried there because that was where they had died. They had had no home to be sent to, no family or loved ones... just each other.
And so, one night at dusk, while the sun's light still hung in the air despite having long since set, no one noticed the slight disturbance in the ground around one of the small wooden crosses. At first, it merely looked as if a crack had formed in the newly dug-up dirt, which was normal when the weather became dry. But, if someone had been watching, they would have soon noticed something which was most certainly not normal for dirt to be doing all on its own. Because, while dirt may crack sometimes and crumble at the edges, it definitely didn't bulge up and collapse over nothing. That sort of thing never happened, unless there was something from below which was trying to get out.
Therefore, had someone actually been watching the scene, they probably wouldn't have been too surprised to see a hand rising from the dirt, even if it was a hand supposedly belonging to a dead man... or boy, as the case was. The hand, which was covered in dirt and caked with crusted blood around the painted fingernails, was quickly followed by an equally dirty and tattered sleeve. It was then accompanied by a second arm, a head and finally a torso, and soon enough Haku found himself sitting up with the bottom half of his body still encased by dirt.
Had someone been watching, perhaps they would have told the boy where he was, once they had gotten over the initial shock of seeing someone rise from the grave. They might have even explained the absence of a coffin; no one had thought to make one during the celebration of Gatou's demise and the completion of the Great Naruto Bridge. "But perhaps," they would say jokingly, "that wasn't such a bad thing after all, seeing as how you weren't really dead to begin with!" But then the boy's eyes would inevitably turn to the side to see a second, identical grave next to his, and though he would never ask just who it belonged to and what had happened to Zabuza, the question would be obvious. And who would want to explain to someone their most important person in the world was dead, even though they had done so much to protect them?
Haku was smart; he could come to his own conclusions, and he didn't need anyone there to give an explanation. But perhaps, if there had been someone there... If someone could have just been there, then...
...Then maybe, Haku wouldn't have come back feeling so absolutely alone.
~ Well, that's the prologue. Hopefully I'll get the next chapter up soon. Um... does anyone expect this to be shounen ai? I'm just curious. I've never seen a fanfic with Haku in it that wasn't shounen ai or yaoi, so I just wanted your opinion. ^_^ I really don't know if there will be couples in this or not, so I suppose you can give suggestions if you want. Doesn't mean I'll use them, but you're more than welcome to give them anyway!
