Chapter one Ryan sat at a table in his history class waiting for the teacher to start the lesson of the day. It was Friday and the last class of the day so he was anxious to get it over with and go home. The final bell that signaled the start of class rang and the students took their seats and the teacher walked to the front of the classroom.
"Good afternoon. Let's have everyone take their seats and pull out the assignment from last night while I'm taking role."
Noise filled the room as everyone was rummaging through their notebooks looking for their assignments.
Mr. Shertite (I don't remember if they ever gave us the name of the history teacher...So I'm making it up) clapped his hands to get his students attention. "I didn't ask for you to have conversations, just pull out your work so we can get down to business. I know it's a Friday, I want to go home too, but I just need your attention for another hour."
The classroom was silent once again. "Ok...role. Spencer Alice?"
"Present ."
"Ryan Atwood?"
"Here."
"Joanna Baywood?"
"Here."
"Marissa Cooper?"
Ryan looked around the classroom not seeing Marissa.
"Ms. Cooper?" Mr. Shertite asked again. "Has anyone seen...Marissa."
Marissa walked into the classroom right as he said her name. "Sorry." She said as she sat down in the only open seat which just happened to be right next to Ryan at the table he was sitting at.
"Don't Apologize, just be on time." Mr. Shertite said before continuing with roll.
As Mr. Shertite called out the names of the students Marissa leaned over to Ryan and tapped him on the shoulder. He moved his head a little bit so that he could see Marissa and the teacher.
"Hey, you guys haven't done anything yet, have you?" She whispered.
"He told us to get out our assignments so that he can collect them after role call."
Marissa gave Ryan a puzzling look. "What assignment?"
"We were supposed to outline chapter 21."
Marissa shook her head. "Oh my God, I completely forgot."
"Ms. Cooper, you already disturbed the class once by your tardiness, so please be quiet while I'm talking."
After the teacher went back to what he was doing Ryan waited a few seconds before turning to Marissa. "Do you want to copy mine?"
"Really? I mean...I can? That would be great."
Ryan handed Marissa his notes which she gladly took. "Thanks."
Marissa quickly copied the notes as Mr. Shertite collected the papers from the other students. She finished just as he got to their table. But she didn't have enough time to hand Ryan back his notes before Mr. Shertite grabbed both papers from Marissa.
Mr. Shertite studied both papers before looking at Ryan and Marissa. "What were you doing with Mr. Atwood's notes Ms. Cooper?"
"I was just..."
"Harbor takes cheating very seriously Ms. Cooper. You and Mr. Atwood are going to face some serious punishments."
"No, don't punish Ryan. It was my fault..."
"You were both a part of this so you will both suffer the consequences."
Marissa shook her head. "But,"
"Now is not the time Ms. Cooper. I want to see both of you after class. Discussion closed." He said looking at Ryan and Marissa before heading back to the front of the class.
Marissa, who had gotten up from her chair while talking to Mr. Shertite, took a seat back in her chair. She stared at her desk not wanting to make eye contact with Ryan. She was the one who didn't do her homework and Ryan was just trying to help her out, and now he was in trouble.

An hour later the bell rang and all the kids hurried out of the classroom, well all except Ryan and Marissa who were sitting in their seats waiting for Mr. Shertite to deal out their punishments.
"Ryan and Marissa, come here please."
Ryan and Marissa walked over to Mr. Shertite's desk. Marissa briefly caught Ryan's eye, giving him a sad smile before turning to the teacher.
"I'm sure you both know this, but Harbor has zero tolerance for cheating."
Marissa put her hands on his desk as she spoke to her teacher. "But Mr. Shertite, Ryan wasn't cheating. I forgot about the assignment and he was just helping me. Please don't get mad at Ryan. I'm accepting all the blame."
"That's very noble of you Marissa, but both parties are to blame here."
"Mr. Shertite..." Marissa started.
Ryan put his hand gently on Marissa's arm. "Its ok Marissa, really." He turned back to his teacher. "So, what's our punishment then?"
Mr. Shertite arched his eyebrows at Ryan's boldness. "Well, the customary punishment for this is three days of suspension."
"Mr. Shertite, please! I can't miss three days, I...I'll lose my position as social chair. And Ryan," She said looking over to Ryan. "Ryan you can't get suspended...you heard what Dr. Kim said if you get into any more trouble." Marissa looked desperately at Mr. Shertite.
Mr. Shertite looked at the two teenagers. He actually felt sorry for them. "The history club is leaving tonight for Carson City, Nevada at 5. You two go and each write a report on what you learned, I will just forget about the suspension."
"What are you saying?" Marissa asked.
"The history club is going on a weekend field trip to the capital of Nevada. If you two go and write a report on what you learned, I will just forget about the suspension. Does that sound like something you two would like to do?"
"Of course!" Marissa exclaimed. She then looked at Ryan.
"Sure." He said.
Mr. Shertite handed a slip to Marissa and then one to Ryan. "Get a parent to sign the permission slip and bring it with you tonight. The bus will be leaving at 5 and you will return Sunday night at seven, and will be staying in a hotel halfway their tonight. If you two aren't there...the suspension will be put into action. Am I understood.?"
Both Ryan and Marissa nodded their heads.
"Now get out of here. You both have some packing to do."
The teens didn't have to be told twice, they grabbed their stuff and left the room.
A few minutes later the two were walking out of the building. "So do you need a ride home?"
"Yeah." Ryan said thinking back to earlier when he told Seth just to go home without him since he didn't know how long his talk with Mr. Shertite would last.
The whole ride home neither of them spoke much. Marissa pulled up in the Cohen's driveway and stopped the car. "Ryan I'm so sorry about this."
"Its ok...really."
"So, how about I pick you up at like 4:45?"
"Sounds good."
Ryan hopped out of the car and headed to the house. Marissa watched him go inside and then pulled out of the driveway.
