Chapter 1

I rolled over and after brushing his hair out of his eyes, kissed his forehead for the last time. I smiled, but a tear rolled down my cheek just the same. I crawled out of the bed cautiously, making sure not to wake Ephram. Quickly I pulled on my jeans that had been thrown on the floor the night before and stepped silently over to his desk in the corner. By the time I finished scribbling my note on a piece of paper that had been lying there, the tears were flowing freely.

I shut the door quietly, knowing the rest of the house would be asleep. As I turned around, the early morning Colorado sun swept over me. I wiped a tear from my cheek, but it was useless; they just kept coming. I walked to the backdoor, and took one last look around.

The kitchen, which I had so often cooked in. The living room, where we had to work out too many family arguments to count. The familiar hall, and the stairs. They led to sleeping Delia in her room who had cried out for Dr. Brown in the middle of the night, who was now asleep in her chair, and of course Ephram in his warm bed.

"Good-bye," I whispered, a quiet sob suddenly escaping my mouth. I shut the backdoor behind me, and my feet crunched the snow as I walked down the pathway and out to my car. It hurt to leave them, and it hurt to know that I would probably never see them again, but what hurt the most was knowing that they would move on and I would eventually be erased. That's the way life is I guess.
