After the family therapy session was over the Girardi family arrived home. The house was dark, the feeling, awkward. Not much was said except the "good-nights." Kevin rolled himself over the lift on the staircase, anxious to get up to his bedroom where he could be alone. When he got up to his room he closed the door and sat there, doing nothing, trying to pretend like nothing had happened. He heard footsteps come up the stairs, then a door closing.

It must be Joan... Kevin thought to himself.

Then, unexpectedly, he heard weeping, it was Joan; she was crying. He debated over whether he should go and talk to her or just leave her be, finally coming to the conclusion that he would go and talk to her.

Kevin rolled over to Joan's door, the music was playing pretty loud as usual. He lifted his arm, hesitating before finally knocking. No answer.

She must not want to talk to anybody, he figured

Just as Kevin went to turn to go back to his room, the door opened. He turned back around to see Joan standing there, red and puffy-eyed.

"Hi," Kevin said.

Joan replied with "hi."

"Umm...are you okay?" Kevin asked.

"Yeah..umm, no...I don't know,"she answered.

"Do you want to talk?" he pushed.

"Doesn't matter," she sighed, shrugging.

"Okay...mind if I come in?" he asked, trying to figure out why she was so upset. This just wasn't like Joan.

"No," she decided, stepping back to let him into the room. Joan sat down on her bed. Kevin followed, closing the door behind him.

So...what's up? I heard you crying." Kevin asked, unsure of what to say. Joan replied quietly, "Nothing,.you just scared me today at the therapy session."

"Yeah, sorry about that," Kevin nodded, taking a deep breath. "I scared myself...I just needed to get it out of my system."

"Yeah," Joan nodded too.

"You know Joan, a lot has changed over the past two years, but one thing hasn't, I'm still you're big brother and always will be. You know that, right?" He added, seeing the confused look on her face. Kevin swallowed hard, trying not to cry.

Just then Joan burst into tears, "Ye...yeah."

"Do you remember before we came here to Arcadia, before my accident...?" He asked.

"Yeah, what about it?" She answered, shrugging.

"How I used to play all those practical jokes on you?" Kevin grinned.

"Like the time you put soda bottle caps in your eyes and told me the boogie man poked your eyes out?" She asked, rolling her eyes.

"Ha ha, I forgot about that." He laughed. Or how about when I had just gotten my license and we would meet in the living room after everyone was asleep and go out for milkshakes every Monday." He added.

"Oh yeah! I forgot about that!" Joan sat forward on the bed, looking happier than she had all evening. "And before you had your license, we would go across the street to the park and shoot hoops," she added.

"It sounds like everyone is asleep," Kevin said quietly. "Wanna go?"

Joan laughed, "Are you serious?"

"Yeah," Kevin shrugged. "Why not?"

"That would be so Awesome, Kevin!" she gasped. "We just can't wake up the parental units or Luke."

"Yeah," Kevin agreed, nodding. "They never did find out."

Joan got up quietly and opened the door. Kevin followed her, turning off the lights, and closing the door behind him. "I'll be right there," he whispered to Joan who was already headed down the stairs. "I have to grab the ball."

"Okay, I'll be down in the living room," she nodded from the stairway, avoiding the squeaky step, three down from the top.

"Sounds good!" Kevin agreed. He pushed himself back to his room and rolled to a gentle stop in front of the shelf where his basketball sat. He hadn't had it off the shelf since they moved in. It felt strange, in a way, but he picked it up, put it in his lap, and headed back to the hallway. At the bottom of the stairs, he transferred quietly to his awaiting chair and joined Joan in the living room. She was bent over, tying her shoelaces.

"Ready?" Kevin asked as Joan was just standing up.

"Yeah, you?" she nodded, giving him a once-over.

"Almost, just have to grab the keys," Kevin said as he headed towards the front door where the keys were.

Once they were out the door, they made their way to the old station wagon parked by the curb in front of the house. Kevin tossed the ball across the front seat to Joan before sliding in next to her and putting his chair in the back seat. They held their breaths as the engine turned over, this would be when Helen or Will might hear something and come investigate. They watched the house for a moment, no lights came on in their parents' bedroom or the hall. They were safe. Kevin put the car into gear and eased away from the curb. Their first stop was McDonalds. They got in line for the drive-through and waited.

"Hi, and welcome to (finish the thought)," said the voice on the other end of the raspy speaker. "What may I get you?"

"Joan, it's strawberry right?" Kevin asked over his shoulder.

"Yeah," she answered, nodding.

"Okay, umm. We will have a medium chocolate shake and a medium strawberry shake," he said. "So that's 2 medium shakes, one strawberry and one chocolate? Will that be all?" the voice returned.

"That's right!" Kevin affirmed with a nod.

"Your total is $6.25 please drive ahead," she told him. Kevin pulled forward and gave the clerk a handful of bills in exchange for their drinks. After tossing his change at Joan, he eased back into traffic and headed to the basketball courts in the park.

"I am so gonna kick your butt!" Joan threatened as they drank their shakes.

"I dunno, that's what you always used to say!" Kevin shrugged, grinning.

"And I won...on occasion!" Joan said laughing.

"So...lets go!" Kevin said. He pulled his chair from the back seat and quickly assembled it as Joan grabbed the ball. She waited for him to pull himself out of the car and into the chair before taking off for the courts. They played for nearly an hour before quitting with Kevin up 8 to 5.

"What did I tell ya?" Kevin boasted enthusiastically.

"Ha ha! Fine...you won," Joan said, pouting.. She spotted a trash can a few yards away and went to toss their cups. Kevin followed her. "I had fun, I missed this," she said as she sat down on the bench beside the trash can. "I missed my big brother."

Kevin paused, unsure of what to say.. After a moment, he took a deep breath, "So what do you say? Do you want to do this next Thursday too?" he asked, breaking out into a huge grin.

"Yeah," Joan said trying to stop crying. "That'd be cool."

"I'm sorry," Kevin said. "I haven't exactly been a very good big brother, to either you or Luke lately."

"That's okay," Joan said starting to cry again.

"And if you ever need to talk, I'm here for you," he added.

"Actually..." Joan hesitated.

"Hmm?" Kevin asked.

"It's...Adam. He refuses to talk to me since I smashed his sculpture, and I...I really like him." she admitted sheepishly.

"So, you've tried talking to him?" he asked.

"Yeah, and he won't listen, whenever I try he leaves," she sniffled.

"And...umm...why exactly did you do it?" Kevin asked curiously.

"Because he was gonna drop out of school so he could put all of his focus on his artwork," she explained.

"Ahh, I see. Well Joan, I think is you should just let him come to you on his own time and when he does just tell him what you told me," Kevin told her, shrugging.

"Okay, thanks Kev," she responded, nodding and wiping her cheeks.

"No problem, come here!" he ordered good-naturedly. Joan walked over to Kevin, sat down on his lap and hugged him as she cried on his shoulder. He hugged her back.

"Grab the basketball and I'll give you a ride," he offered.

Joan grabbed the ball and held it as she sat on Kevin's lap. As he wheeled over to the old station wagon they talked and laughed. Joan finally had her big brother back.
