Chapter 4: The Pity of Sorrow
She looked so sad... and lost... But, of course, that was how she always looked. It made me so sad to think what it would be like to have no emotion. Of course, for Shade, it was a reality. She was so beautiful... but, so cold, and forbidding. Her face... It was different! Her hair was long and brown, and she had deep green-blue eyes.
It was terrible to think of being separated from your parents at such a young age. It was even worse to see them murdered. "Shade?" I whispered from the dark corner. She looked up, a little startled at my voice.
"Yes?" she answered in a light, calm voice.
"Do you miss them?"
She looked at me: not confused, or startled, but just looked. Finally, she said, "No," and looked back down into the fire. "I don't feel sorrow, or remorse... just anger..."
"What does it feel like?" I couldn't help but ask. I truly did want to know...
Shade closed her eyes, and said, "Nothing..."
"Do you remember what it's like to feel emotion?"
"No, Dilandau. In fact, the only things I can remember from my child hood are my parents being murdered, and Miroku saving me from going mad...."
I stood up, and walked over to her. "What happened that Miroku had to save you from?"
"When I was younger, I couldn't control my demonic form. Miroku's wind tunnel attracts demonic energy, so one day when I was traveling with him the magnetic pull got to me, and I changed. By opening the wind tunnel, the magnetic pull was reversed, causing me to change back. I'm lucky he cared about me. If he didn't, he probably would have let me go mad."
She sighed, and continued. "I guess I'm lucky I don't have emotion... It's the only reason Inu-Yasha puts up with me..."
Suddenly, so much made sense...
