Why, Master?

By Gwendolen

Why, Master? I can't help but wonder why you push me so.

What is it that you see in this boy? Why is it so important to you that I take him as a padawan? If he's destined to become a Jedi, there are other masters and even knights around who could take him on. Even you aren't old enough not to take on another padawan. So, why me?

What have you seen? I know that sometimes the future seems like an open book to you. And that you, even though you would vehemently deny it, sometimes feel the urge to manipulate the present for the future.

Is it that? Is that one of the reasons why I have to take the boy as a padawan-learner?

I can't agree with you on this. Just like I can't stop you, although I've tried often enough. And will again. Refusing to see, refusing to accept. Only listening to what the Force is telling me. Sometimes only listening to what I want to hear. Following my way, doing what I feel is right. And living with the pain.

As I have before.

That brings me back to the boy.

I can feel the power in him. He is strong in the Force. It shines from him, beautiful and bright. When I first saw him, I was surprised that he hadn't been chosen yet. It's not the Jedi-way to ignore and waste such potential. What did you do, Master?

I can feel the threat he represents. I know that there will come a time when I won't be able to resist him. I will fall to his lure. Is this what you want? This child bound to me? Me bound to him?

Do you think he will help me over my loss? He's not Xanatos. No matter how strong he is, he never will be.

One boy in exchange for another, Master?

The Force beckons - or rather it's pushing me. The bond is already forming, even without my doing, or my consent. I don't want this. I don't want this bright child in my life. He shouldn't be bound to me.

The rebel in me, as well as the tired old man, screams against the power that forces my fate. That doesn't leave me any choice. The Jedi simply wants to bow to the dictate of the Force. Right now, they are all at odds with each other.

And it will be this beautiful boy who will have to pay the price.
