My Darling Lillian

Chapter 4

And Off Again

Young Legolas was wandering about in the forest, looking about worriedly.
It was getting dark, and he wasn't even supposed to be out at all!
He heard a noise behind him, and whirled around to meet it, a small arrow in his small bow.
"Who are ye?" He called gallantly into the approaching gloom, though his heart trembled.
"What have we here?" A sinister voice jeered, "A young Elfling?"
Legolas didn't appreciate being called 'Elfling' and his soul burned.
"A rare treat on a chilly eve." Another voice contributed.
'Spiders' Legolas thought, his blood running cold in his veins, as he pulled his quiver back, ready to release at any moment.
He fired, and reloaded his bow, feet slightly apart for balance.
He heard a hideous scream of agony from a spider, then suddenly a host of the spiders sprung forth and attacked Legolas.
Realizing that this was not a time for arrows, he swiftly put away the bow and arrow, and removed his two short knives.
He did well for a time, but there were simply too many of them.
'If only I hadn't left...' Legolas thought vaguely, as he bravely tried to fend off the oncoming spiders.
Suddenly from out of the underbrush came a shrill battle cry, and Legolas found himself not alone, but fighting alongside his mother.
"Legolas, go get your father!" She commanded, as she wielded a long sword.
"But-" Legolas began to protest.
"Now!" She commanded, not removing her attention from the spiders.
Legolas broke through the ring of spiders that were attacking his mother and ran with all his strength and will and soul till he reached the gate of the Elfish Tunnel.
"Atar! Atar!*1" He yelled pounding on the door.
It was a long wait until Thranduil arrived, and proved too long a wait for Legolas' mother.

Lillian wandered about in Rivendell. It was so calm here, unlike the city she had lived in until only about a week ago.
She sat down underneath a large tree next to a pond. This was just like the place that her father had taken her just before he had become ill.
The day floated into a blur to Lillian, and before she had known it was noon, it was becoming dark, and time for Lillian to get ready for the party.

After changing, Lillian was shown to the dining room, where Gandalf, Hallaampion, Phercrabanion, Dûrmelion, Legolas, Gimly, Valin, Ori, Frór, Aragorn, Arwen, Elrond, and a few other Elves were already seated.
She muttered a quick apology for her tardiness as she seated herself.
The meal went smoothly, and everyone enjoyed themselves; even the Dwarfs began to relax, and enjoy the meal.
Near the end of the meal, Aragorn stood with Arwen, and made an announcement:
"Today I am delighted to announce the birth of Arwen and my first son, Eldarion."
This announcement was greeted with many cheers and congratulations.
"Why did you not send me a message?" Gimly asked, overjoyed for his close friend.
"I did, but the message carriers returned, saying that you had left earlier that morning." Aragorn replied.
"Might I add that your father was none too pleased with your sudden departure, Legolas." Another Elf added.
"I didn't think he would be..." Legolas said, smiling impishly.
Lillian sat staring at her plate, feeling a bit awkward.
Legolas and Gandalf noticed.
"Aragorn, Arwen, I am afraid I have forgotten to introduce Lillian." Gandalf said to the couple.
Lillian sent an appreciative look to Gandalf, who smiled and nodded, then Lillian gave Legolas an angry glare.

Lillian and Arwen soon became friends, and often strolled around Rivendell.
"Do you plan on continuing the journey?" Arwen asked one day.
"Nothing could prevent me from continuing." Lillian said, her temper flaring at the memory of Legolas' attempt to keep her from joining then on the next leg of their journey.

The next day a few hours after dawn, the same party that had departed from Bree, left Rivendell.
The Elves were a bit disappointed to be leaving; especially Phercrabanion, who had been seen here and there accompanied by a fair Elf maiden named Elammire Starjewel.
Thus commenced a pointless and extensive teasing session between Phercrabanion and Dûrmelion.
The rest of the company ignored them, as was tradition.
Legolas was disappointed, because Aragorn had decided not to accompany them.
Lillian, however, had her mind on more substantial matters, and was devising a plan to help her 'be worth her keep'.
Lillian had often wondered why gun-powder blew up only when ignited by fire, and had long ago set about to find a new type of gun-powder that would combust when sudden pressure was applied.
She had tried many different assortments of powders back on Earth, but had never quite seemed to get it right.
However; now she had almost completed the formula.

The next night, Legolas was resting/sleeping with his eyes open as usual, when he saw a flash behind him, and turned to see Lillian bending over a few bags of who knew what, with a triumphant look on her face.
"What are you doing?" Legolas asked.
Lillian stared at him a moment, obviously not expecting to be noticed. The usual gray pain in her eyes gone in alertness, and replied: "Gun-powder."

The next morning, Lillian had a hushed conversation with Gandalf and Hallaampion during breakfast. Then Lillian demonstrated the power of her power.
She had divided a portion of the basic powder into numerous small bags, so that she would only need to add a pinch of this, and a pinch of that, and a small bomb was ready.
Gandalf and Hallaampion agreed that it was a wonderful discovery, but that she must only use it in emergencies, and Lillian agreed.

The next day, they arrived at the cave where old Bilbo and the company of Dwarfs had entered.
"It's blocked." Phercrabanion pointed out.
Gandalf had, as he had promised, gotten a kind giant to block it long ago.
"I have a feeling that we won't need a giant to un-block it." Gandalf chuckled, as he nodded at Lillian.
Lillian smiled, and walked over to the, now impassible, entrance.
"Get behind those rocks." Lillian commanded, as she placed a few strategically bags of powder into several crevices, then took refuge herself behind another rock.
She then picked up a small rock, and threw it over her shoulder.
A huge bang ensued, and the boulders that were once blocking the cave, blew into small bits.
"Ready?" Lillian asked, smiling though her face was blackened by soot.
The group entered in.
"That is a very attractive style for you." Legolas prodded as he passed into the darkness.
"Not even you can ruin my day." Lillian said primly as she ignored Legolas' comment, and entered herself.
"Shh..." Gandalf cautioned them in the darkness, "No light and no noise." He whispered, it would be better to attack the goblins by surprise.
As their eyes accustomed to the dark, they were able to move a bit more quietly.
Every noise became painfully loud, especially to the Elves.
Legolas frowned at every step the Dwarfs took in their heavy boots.
After a while, the silence became too unbearable for Lillian, so she whispered a small comment.
"What's that feeling in the air?" She asked, referring to the haunting feel, a lingering stench of something immensely evil, though it had left long ago.
"It is the sense of something evil that was here long ago, though I dare not name it here, nor elsewhere." Legolas replied in a whisper, referring to the One Ring.
Lillian sensed that it was nothing lightly talked of, and so the fellowship continued in silence.
After a while, Lillian suddenly became aware of a noise behind them, a shuffling, pattering sound, like many feet following them in the dark.
"Nack no enas*2..." Lillian whispered to Legolas.
"I know." Legolas whispered back.
Lillian would have turned to see what it was, but Legolas plated a firm hand of her shoulder, and said: "Auume querna *3."
Lillian mixed a small bag of powder, and silently dropped it for unfriendly feet to step upon.
After a brief silence, there was an explosion, and a yelp of pain!
"There is no use in being secretive now!" Legolas shouted as he led the attack.
