Sisters of the Shang Chapter One by Katie Mae

"Aurora, Kitrena, come here for a moment." I heard my father's voice echoing into the bedroom my twin sister, Aurora, and I shared. She looked at me, her eyes clearly showing the nervousness I could see rolling off of her like a bright gray tsunami. "It's all right," I whispered. "Father has good news." "How can you tell?" she whispered back to me. "I can sense the happiness in his voice." It was true; As his booming voice reached our ears, I could feel the extreme happiness from my father, tendrils of bright pink smoke accompanying his breath. However, I was the only one who could tell. Ever since my sister and I were little, we have both had strange gifts. Father says that they are blessings from the gods, and that they should be used to honor them. I have always wondered what god would wish for me to be able to sense emotions, and to be able to see them as auras surrounding a person or animal. My sister, on the other hand, has always been the practical one, and she has the practical gift; she can control the weather. At least, she can for a short amount of time, and only for a small area. But she has prevented more than one ruined harvest by controlling the rate of rainfall over the fields of crops surrounding our home. Aurora and I walked into Father's chambers, approaching he and our mother quickly. I could see a mixture of pink and lavender seeming to emanate from their pores; they were happy, and they were feeling extremely loving toward my sister and I. When Aurora and I reached the middle of the room, they beckoned us to come closer. "What do you wish to speak to us about, Father?" Aurora asked. "My beautiful daughters, as you know, your mother and I have been working tirelessly to find you suitable husbands," Father began. We nodded. "Well, it just so happens that one of our good friends has two sons that are of age. We have decided that you shall be marrying them. They are from Tortall, so we shall be taking you there soon so that you may meet them." "Father," I said, "might we know what their names are?" "Certainly, Kitrena. Your fiance's name is Nealan of Queenscove, and Aurora's husband-to-be is Domitan of Masbolle." "Queenscove? That sounds familiar." "It should. Nealan's father, Baird of Queenscove, was here for a visit recently. That was when we finalized the plans. As guardian for Domitan, his nephew, as well as his son Nealan, he has agreed to both marriages. The unions shall augment our family's wealth, and you two will produce fine heirs for both young men to carry on their lineage. After all, you are Shang, and great warriors each in your own right." My sister and I bowed. "Thank you, Father," Aurora said after a moment. "We shall rest assured that our futures are bright." With those words, we were released. We immediately walked to the training room to practice. I could tell that both my sister and I needed to ease the gray and black waves we were releasing. After a few hours of hard exercise, we both exuded a soft blue glow. We'd worked out our nervousness and fear, and were too exhausted to feel anything else. Somehow, we managed to struggle to our feet and walk to the baths. We soaked for a few hours in the hot water, feeling our aches and pains seem to melt away. As we soaked, we talked. "Aurora, do you know what Nealan looks like?" "No, Kitrena. I've never met him. In fact, I don't think we've ever met anyone from their families besides Baird of Queenscove." "Oh, right." "However, perhaps they will send us a portrait of themselves." "That would be nice. I'm not sure if I would want to marry someone who is missing teeth, or has had a pox." "Neither would I, Kitrena." Later that evening, Mother came to our bedroom to speak to us. "My daughters," she said, "I must speak with you. As you well know, the Shang are known for their prowess as fighters. However, once you are wives, there are several things you must know. The most important is how to rear children." She spent the rest of the evening explaining the mysteries of wifehood and motherhood to us. When she was finished, Aurora and I were sure that we knew everything there was to know about raising children, keeping track of the servants, and the various other duties of a nobleman's wife. "Good night, my dears," Mother said, simultaneously brushing locks of our long, dark hair from both of our faces. "Good night, Mother," we said in unison. After Mother had left, we snuggled under our blankets and soon fell into a deep sleep, full of dreams of our unknown fiances.
