Be careful what you wish for. By Marianne

With a painful wrench Spike's head snapped forward and he growled unhappily. Just in front of him, Buffy paused and looked back, her eyebrows raised. Shrugging and twisting his head back and forth, he indicated that she should continue. She grinned at him nastily, turned and strode off. He was careful to keep up with her, not too close and certainly not too far away. Just hoping that no-one he knew would see them.

At last, they arrived at the cemetery scheduled for that night's patrol and he was free to fight. The demons didn't let them down; there were many of different shapes and kinds. Just the sport Spike was after – he could take out all his frustrations and anger on them and not on the small, frail- looking woman fighting beside him.

When, at last, they couldn't find another demon, Buffy strode up to the vampire and took over. "Come on," she purred, "time to go home."

His insides did their usual clenching and twisting act, "OK Slayer, I'm all yours."

She smirked, reached up and tousled his hair in that annoying way of hers, then hauled the chain from inside his shirt and tugged on it. It was his own stupid, bloody fault he thought to himself bitterly. How many times had he snarked at Buffy to get him a collar and leash? He just hadn't expected her to get a steel choke chain, magically enhanced so that she was the only one who could remove it. Complaining had only got him a crushed windpipe that took several days to heal.

He should have been warned when she had turned up with it one day not so long ago and said, "you should be careful what you wish for."

Note: "Why don't you get me a nice collar and leash?" Spike has mentioned it on the show and many people (myself included) have used it in their fics. I couldn't get this silly thing out of my mind, so – here it is. The shortest fic in the world!
