"What good will a newspaper do you, Black?"
It was nearing midnight on July 27. Cornelius Fudge looked disgustedly at Sirius' fathomless black eyes through the bars of the Azkaban prison cell. His clean and manicured fingers gripped the latest Daily Prophet, as Sirius' own dirty and broken hands reached for it. The two stayed locked in a war of the stillness of hands, and eyes.
"What good will a newspaper do you, Black?"
Five minutes till midnight. Sirius knew he should answer that reading about the world outdoors would serve to torment him more, bring him closer to the brink of insanity. He knew he should appeal to the sadism in Fudges' heart.
"What good will a newspaper do you, Black?"
Three minutes till midnight. He could mention how he was desperate for a distraction, a change, something to occupy his mind since his last paper had rotted away to thin parchment and smears of ashy ink. He should beg that if Fudge had any humanity in him he would have mercy.
"What good will a newspaper do you, Black?"
One minute till midnight. Sirius looked down dejectedly and withdrew his hand, sliding silently back into his cell.
"Nothing."
