Lover's Mirage:

Chapter 1

Sarah stared up at the new college building.  The campus seemed to be almost twice the size of her hometown.  "It seems even bigger than the Labyrinth," she thought, before mentally chastising herself.  She needed to stop relating everything in her life to that horrible place.  Ever since Jareth had taken her to the Underground, everything in her normal world seemed to have some connection to the maze…and to the Goblin King.  "Stop it!" she screamed in her mind, and stepped briskly into the bustling world of college life.

A scrawny professor sat behind an information desk just inside the front door.  She barely looked up when Sarah entered, keeping her eyes on some document she was perusing.  "Welcome to Juliard College," she said in a bored tone.  "Please fill out these papers and I'll be right with you."  A stack of forms about an inch thick plopped down onto the desk.

With a sigh that the professor chose to ignore, Sarah sat down in one of the hard, uncomfortable chairs and began to write.  About an hour later she sighed once more and handed the stack of now completed papers to the bored woman. "Thank you for your time," she said in the same bored tone. "Someone will come shortly to welcome you into the wonderful world of-" she looked down at her papers. "acting." The sarcasm in her voice was almost tangible as Sarah walked away from the desk.

"Good day to you too," Sarah thought.  With a glare over her shoulder, she turned to wait for the professor.

Jareth watched Sarah from his throne room, as he had for the past 4 years since the young 14-year-old girl had first set foot in his Labyrinth.  He absentmindedly twirled the orb between his fingertips; though he always kept her face in clear view.

"Sarah…" he murmured for what seemed to be the thousandth time, "It's been so long since you've bound me to this place…"

Angrily he hurled the orb across the room, watching as it bounced from wall to wall, eventually disappearing with a small popping noise.  Frustrated, he propped one hand on the arm of his throne and rested his chin on it. "What to do now?"

Twirling a blond strand around his finger, he stared off into the depths of the darkened hallways.  Thoughts swam through his mind, blotting out reality and sending him off on a trip through time…back to the Labyrinth four years ago.  He could still see the uncertainty in Sarah's eyes as she twirled through the ballroom with him.  "If only I could get back to you…'"

"Back…to…you…" He sat up suddenly, a dangerous light kindling in the depths of his blue eyes.  Goblins scattered as he strode across the filthy room, purpose once more filling his manner.  With a flick of his wrist, another crystal appeared in his hand, and he twirled it atop his fingertips, a mysterious laugh interrupting the stiff silence.  Sarah's bored face stared right past him, but he leaned down to her as if she were right there in the room with him.

"Sarah, how would you react if I were human?  Would you still hold the same grudge against me?  Or is it just my face that you despise so…?"  He whipped around.  "Hoggle!  Bring this to the mortal realm.  Make sure that you drop it somewhere in that school.  I'll handle the rest."
