Memories of Confession

by Amberle-chan

Kenshin and Kaoru walked to the bridge together, side-by-side, their voices low and their words only for each other. Then, as they reached the bridge, Kenshin became quiet and thoughtful....

I have been blind

Unwilling

To see the true love

You're giving

He opened the gate and there she was again, sitting on the dojo porch, waiting for him to return. He had been living at the Kamiya dojo for only two weeks, yet when he returned from his occassional wandering of the streets of Tokyo, Kaoru was there. He was not sure why she did it; he was the Battousai, after all. Why wasn't she afraid of him?

I have ignored every blessing

I'm on my knees

Confessing...

Kenshin watched in surprise as Kaoru pulled the blue ribbon from her hair. "This is my favorite ribbon, Kenshin," she said softly, pressing the soft material into his hand, "but you have to return it after you finish your battle with Jin-eh." He tried to give it back to her, but then he noticed the pleading thoughts behind her sapphire eyes: Please come back home, Kenshin....

Then I feel myself surrender

Each time I see your face

I am staggered by your beauty

You're unassuming grace.

Deep night had fallen, but no darkness surrounded her as he moved closer. Fireflies danced, lighting her sweet face. "I'm going to Kyoto," he told her, embracing her gently. "Farewell..." A soft fall of rain glided down her cheeks, but she did not try to hold him back as he disappeared into the blackness. She let him go... .

And I feel my heart is turning

Falling into place

I can't hide it

Now hear my confession

Black darkness, yet her light is near. Kenshin could hear Kaoru's heart as she softly wrapped his gi around him. "How can you fight him when you're blind, Kenshin?" her gentle voice questioned. "I must face him again," he replied, "but although I cannot see, Kaoru-dono, I'm more concerned that you are not smiling...."

I have been wrong about you

I thought I was strong without you

For so long

Nothing could move me

For so long

Nothing could change me.

He sat in stillness for days. He saw nothing but her, her blue, lifeless eyes widened in terrible pain, and now there was nothing left but his empty soul and her name. "Kaoru!" his heart cried to the heavens... .

Now I feel myself surrender

Each time I see your face

I am captured by your beauty

Your unassuming grace.

She was home, she was safe. Life had never left those radiant eyes. Her quiet strength soothed his aching heart. Her tender love mended his torn soul... .

And I feel my heart is turning

Falling into place

I can't hide it

They stood on the bridge alone in quiet companionship, watching the reflection of dusk in the slightly rippling river, turning the water into a dance of dark sapphire and violet colors. He took her warm hand in his own, her eyes searching his, a gentle smile curved her lips.

Now hear my confession....

"Aishiteru, Kaoru, Aishiteru... ."

The End

Author's Note: This song-fic is a mixture of Kenshin's memories of Kaoru and my own imagination. The song is My Confession, sung by Josh Groban. Many of the songs that Josh sings could fit their story, but I believe that this one suits them best. This piece is my tribute to Watsuki-san's beautiful love story and Josh Groban's enchanting voice.
