Virgil sat for hours in the street, his friend's head rested on his arm and
tears dripping out like a faucet left on. By the time he looked up, the sun
was lowering in the sky and Virgil guessed that the news would air soon.
Far off in the distance, he heard his name being called. It was his sister. But why? Virgil looked down at his friend. He didn't know what to do with Richie.
His mom was out of town for a while, and he had been staying at Virgil's house. Not that that wouldn't happen when she was home.
'I know, thought Virgil. I could drop him off at my house as Static.' Virgil shook his head. 'That wouldn't work. Hmm... Where do you bring dead bodies?' He cringed at the thought of having to go to the morgue. Richie and him had talked about how creepy it would be in a room full of dead bodies. A tear fell down his cheek when he thought about Richie being one of those dead bodies.
Suddenly, Virgil felt himself being sucked into the ground, while Richie stayed on the street.
"Ebon, I am not in the mood for you right now!" The dark shadow just stared at the boy. Confused. Just as Virgil realized he wasn't Static he felt himself being spit out of the ground.
Meanwhile, Sharon and her father were sitting down for the news. Their eyes widened as they listened to the TV set.
'This afternoon,' the newswoman began. 'Static, Dakota's well-known superhero was found having the life drained out of him by a bang baby, calling himself, Shifter. We were all surprised as Static's new sidekick, gear, came to save the day.'
"I guess Richie'll be happy. He loves Gear." Mr. Hawkins stated.
'Much to Shifter's content, Gear was thrown back by the power of both bang babies. And with the impact of the fall Gear's helmet broke revealing that Static's sidekick is none other then a high school student Richard Folley.' On the screen the woman stopped talking as they showed a picture of him and Virgil on the screen.
"Poor Virgil. I wonder if knows about it." Sharon said. Feeling bad for her little brother.
Though his attempt was not completely affective, Gear gave Static the time to shock Shifter and send him darting away. Now we see Static in shock, looking around, at the young boy and running away. In the background, you could hear Richie crying out for Virgil.
"Poor kid," said Mr. Hawkins. "All he wants is to be with his best friend."
'This is Claudia Bynx, leaving you with the question: is it really Static who's been saving us all this time? Goodnight Dakota.'
Sharon and Mr. Hawkins looked over as they heard the door slam. Virgil tried to hide his feelings but wasn't sure how.
"Hey Virgil. Where's Richie?" Sharon asked as her father left the room.
Virgil was unsure how to react so he slowly walked over to the couch, buying him a few seconds to think. "What do you care?"
"I was tryin to be nice. Did you see the news?" She asked casually.
"Leave me alone, Sharon." "So I assume you knew about Richie."
Virgil was getting annoyed; of course he knew about Richie, it was his fault. "Know what?"
"That he's Static's little sidekick."
"Ya he told me that a while ago." Virgil felt like he was going to burst. He got up and went over to the stairs "Now leave me alone Sharon!" He yelled as he stomped up to his room.
When he got inside he slammed his door shut; he looked around and screamed. Virgil was so mad with himself. "I should've been able to take him! Shifter isn't that strong! Urr! It's all my fault!" Virgil yelled himself. He was so furious; he took his comic books and launched them across his room. Then he threw himself onto his bed.
As Virgil looked out his window, he felt the cold air brush against his face and once again he thought about Richie. He remembered how in the winter, when he was too stubborn to put on coat, Richie would lend him his once they were too far to run back for a coat. He laughed at the countless times Richie had gotten sick from that.
Virgil got up and looked around his room for something to take his mind of his friend. As he searched through a pile of papers and old comic books, he found a card that caught his eye. Virgil took the card and sat down on his bed to read it.
While he looked at the cover, he remembered getting this card when he had gotten really sick a few weeks after the whole Static-superhero-thing began. It was from Richie. The card was rather simple but what was inside is what got to him.
The card read:
Dear Virgil,
Get better soon! You know you really scared me man. When your dad told
how sick you were, I began wondering what I'd do without you.
Nothing would be as much fun anymore. School would be a drag and every
time I'd see Daisy I would think of you and when I saw the old gas
station or the basketball courts or when I heard about a bang baby. I'd
be a mess without you V.
I think you're stronger than me, Virg. If one of us has to go first, I
hope it's me. You'll do fine without me.
Virgil looked up from the letter. It was like looking straight into Richie's mind. He didn't remember ever reading this. He went back to the letter.
I must sound pretty selfish. But listen, I could never let you die. I
promise you man, that if I can I'll save you! Well V if you're reading
this I'm probably already dead. Don't try to figure out why or how, just
remember I'm still there. Oh and one more thing I left you something, in
your room behind that one painting you swore you'd never move there's
something waiting for you.
I love you man,
Richie Folley
P.S. It's okay for superheroes to cry...
Virgil felt so confused. How did Richie know that he would read that letter once he was dead? How did he know?
Sharon opened her brother's door and poked her head inside. "Virgil are you okay?"
"Yeah" he said with a deep sigh. "Why?"
Sharon just looked at him blankly before responding. "Oh because you've been repeating 'It's okay for superheroes to cry' for the past five minutes. What's that supposed to mean anyway?"
"That's what Richie said to me before he died." Sharon tried to look surprised. "Oh yeah, um Richie died." Virgil was on the verge of crying again, but choked it back.
"About that." Virgil's eyes widened remembering the newswoman. "I think all of Dakota knows..." Sharon was cut short by her father calling them down for dinner. Just as Sharon opened her mouth, Virgil began to speak. "I'll meet you down there. K?" She nodded as she left her brother's room. Virgil looked around, sighed and then followed his sister down the stairs.
