It had been two weeks since Richie died. In those two weeks Virgil had done
nothing. When he was at school, his mind drifted to a world without any
meta-humans, a world where Richie was still around. But every time he
thought about it, that world was shattered and everything went back to
normal.
Every night, he had the same dream. It was like a slideshow, there to remind him that it was his fault. And every time, it ended with the words, 'It's okay for superheroes to cry." Those words that Richie said whirled around through his mind.
Virgil flew over the city. It was the first time Static had done his patrol in two weeks. Static heard a siren in the distance, so he flew in the direction of trouble. To his surprise, the police officers had already captured the burglar. Without Static's help.
"I'm useless." He said before flying away again.
As he watched over the city he saw a familiar face. It was Richie. "Richie!" he yelled. Not letting him out of his sight, Virgil flew down to meet his friend. "Richie?" suddenly, he was gone. "Oh well." He sighed.
Virgil rubbed his eyes and walked into the alley. Quickly he changed, and went out the other side. Not paying attention to where he was going he collided with a girl carrying a pile of books.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to run into you." Virgil began to help her with her books when he realized who it was.
"Virgil. How are you?" asked Daisy who seemed quite pleased to have run into him.
"I'm... Okay, I guess. What are all the books for?"
Daisy giggled sweetly. "There for my dad. He's doing this big project and he needed..." Daisy was interrupted by a big explosion coming from across town. Virgil knew instantly what was going on. He leapt up to his feet and ran down the street.
"See ya later, Daisy!" Virgil's voice drifted out as he ran away.
He slipped down an alley, where he changed into his superhero gear. Flicking out his board, Virgil jumped on and left Static to do the rest. He flew over buildings looking for the people who were creating this mess.
Ebon yelled at his companions. "Hurry up... Let's go... Come on!" he flared with anger as he heard police cars approaching. "Frizz, Vanish! Get them!" Following his orders a boy who had to be a few years younger than Virgil attacked the police. "The rest of you! Keep working!" Static felt confused. There seemed to be more meta-humans everyday. 'And who's Frizz and Vanish?' he questioned himself.
He wasn't sure what to do. He wanted to go help the police, but something was holding him back. Virgil pulled away and flew over to Ebon and his friends.
"Looks like we have company... Get him!" Static dodged flames and winds and the occasional flying super villain. But he was caught off guard by some shock that sent him falling to the ground. 'I gotta stop getting' hit all the time.' Virgil thought as he plummeted to the ground, when suddenly he saw a black figure coming to catch him.
Thinking it was Ebon, he tried in vain to move out of his grasp. To his surprise, the black figure set him down lightly on the ground.
Elsewhere Ebon watched in fury as his new accomplice helped what was supposed to be 'their' enemy. Furious, he ordered another to finish them off.
Just as Static went to thank the mysterious black figure, a ball of fire was shot at them. 'Have all the meta-humans joined forces to gang up on me?' Virgil asked himself.
"Come on! I know where to go!" the guy yelled and Static followed him.
The two flew away and rested on a rooftop, but not for long. Suddenly, an immense blast of blue light torched the rooftop and Virgil's saver. The guy just laid there, his jet-black hair fried and covering his face.
"That'll teach you to turn on us!" yelled out the one who had scorched him.
The young man looked up at Static, his eyes begging help. And something about him made Virgil wish he could run over and help him, but he was frozen in shock, yet he managed to whisper,
"Richie?"
