The sky broke and wept. The rain fell hard and fast and the cold bit through Snake's raincoat right into his skin. He didn't shiver, only hunched his shoulders up on either sides of his hood. The look was about him of a man who had lost everything and had nothing to live for, and to an extent this was true, but he had decided long ago that he would be damned if he was going to crawl into a hole and die. He would rather go on existing, and whether he did anything further or not he remained a thorn in The Patriot's side; the one stain on their perfect record. They would carry on watching Campbell until the day he dies, hoping for some slip up that would lead to him. But Campbell had been very careful. He had spent a lot of long nights planning that meeting, and Snake knew that if they were ever going to catch him it wouldn't be because of Roy Campbell. It was far more likely to come from Hal.....

About four years ago, Dr Hal Emmeric was discovered trying to hack into top secret US documents regarding the worldwide distribution of Metal Gear. They had traced him before he could send a "spike" file, and he had been arrested in his apartment in Manhattan. This information was never released to the press and the existence of Emmeric, or Otacon (his hacker name), is still generally unknown to the public. As such, he was not tried in a state court and his sentence remains a mystery.

Snake knew that Otacon had been tortured. He knew that he had cracked under torture in a matter of days after his arrest. He also knew that it hadn't been done within the United States; a South American country on friendly terms would be far more likely. Beyond that, even Snake knew little. The Patriots were too careful for that.
