"Breathe in and out, in and out. Heee. Whooo. Heeee. Whoooo" the midwife said trying to get her patient to breathe correctly instead of screaming from the pain. "Good. Keep breathing in and out. You are almost there. I can see the head" With in a minute the midwife was holding a baby boy. The midwife looked over at the lady. She was ghostly white with sweat dripping down her face. The lady looked her in the eye with very tired, sick eyes. "Look at your baby boy, Lady."
"Maude, There is another one coming! I'm not sure that I will be able to bear it. It first one took all of the strength out- ahhhhh" the lady screamed and clutched her belly as the contractions continued. Maude coached her on how to breathe again but it took a while for her to get it right. The lady was screaming in pain. Finally a head appeared.
"Lady, you have a baby girl. Lady?" Maude looked over at the bed. The lady was lying limp on the bed the color and energy were drained from her face. A good amount of her blood from the birth was soaking up the sheets around her. Maude rushed to her side. "Lady! Lady! Speak to me. Are you all right?" Her dry, cracked lips parted but no sound came out. "Lady! Lady!" Maude grabbed her hand to comfort her. Tears were streaming down Maude's face.
A voice whispered into the Lady's ears so that only she could hear it. This voice was harsh, like a pack of howling wolves. It had an air of power laced with grace. "I will watch over her and guide her to her path." The lady attempted to speak again. Finally words came to her but they were barely a whisper. "Thom. Alanna. Name them Thom and Alanna." And she slumped over, dead. Maude was crying from the loss of a close friend but realized that she needed to take care of the children. She held both of the children sobbing when she realized that something felt wrong. She looked at the children. Both were quiet, which is abnormal for a newborn, but what was frightening was that they both had red hair and bright purple eyes like amethysts.
