I am so happy that I got some reviews. I was so nervous because this is the
first time I have ever posted a story. Please if you have any suggestions
let me know. I love feedback.
Lizzie left Hillridge with exactly $140 in her bank account. She fell asleep in the truck for what seemed like days but when she woke up she was in an entirely different country. She was in Canada. At first it scared her but everyone she met was really nice to her. It took her awhile to get onto her feet considering she came to the country with just a prom dress and it was a lot colder there than in California. She didn't know the real meaning of winter until she experienced it in Canada.
Her first months in Vancouver she lived with a girl named Suzette. She was Asian and worked for a manicure salon. She saw Lizzie looking in through the window and invited her in because business was slow. Anyway they started talking and Suzette offered her a job. Suzette was 40 and her family was in China and she was very lonely in Canada. Lizzie lived in her apartment, which was just above the shop. Lizzie learnt everything there was to know about nails and doing manicures.
Suzette became like Lizzie's mother and Lizzie was very grateful. Suzette helped Lizzie learn all about cosmetics and fashion and soon Lizzie was an aspiring fashion designer and decided she would go to Montreal; the fashion capital of Canada. It was very similar to Europe with outrageous but accepted fashions and cute boutiques on corner streets. Although Lizzie was growing in more ways than one she still had that small space in her heart for all those she left behind.
So many times she was tempted to pick up the phone and call her mother. She missed her dearly and the rest of her family. She missed Matt annoying her everyday with his stupid, crazy, almost brilliant ideas. She knew one day he would invent something so amazing it would change the world. She stopped herself from phoning because of fear. She feared that they had forgotten who she was and she feared they would not accept who she has become.
Once Lizzie became a famous fashion designer she was known as Elizabeth Belle. Belle was the name of her fashion line which means beautiful is English. She has her own store and she became very popular within Canada. She had all that she could ask for including the downtown loft apartment with an amazing view and she was only 27. Things didn't seem like they could get any better.
Lizzie, on the other hand, hadn't been on a date in 7 years and she had a reason for it. When she still lived with Suzette she was diagnosed with AIDS. It was a big shock and she didn't understand how she could have contracted AIDS since she had only slept with one guy. At that one guy of course was Ethan Craft. She felt she had the duty to tell him just in care he was in fact infected with the disease.
"Hi may I speak to Ethan please?"
"This is Ethan," said the deep voice over the phone.
"Oh hi Ethan it's me Lizzie McGuire," she said nervously.
"Oh hey Lizzie. How's it going?"
"I'm doing alright. How about you? Going to school?"
"I'm doing great. I go to a technical college. I'm learning all about technology and computers. It's really awesome. So what are you doing? I mean you left Hillridge like three years ago and no one knows where you are," Ethan said seriously.
"Oh well I'm making a living, getting along alright. But I didn't call to talk about me.... well I did but I think it concerns you as well. I need to tell you something really important," Lizzie said. "How's your health Ethan?"
"Um.... I'm doing alright," he said a little confused. "What's going on Lizzie?" "Ethan you know on prom we slept together right. You woke up alone but when I woke up I was lying next to you," Lizzie explained.
"Yeah...I thought it was some kind of rumor or something," Ethan said, "sorry,"
"Don't be sorry but I have to tell you that I haven't been with any other guy since you and I've.... I have HIV now," Lizzie said holding back the tears.
"You have AIDS!? You got from me no doubt," Ethan said ashamed. "Shit."
"Ethan I want you to go to the doctor's and find out for sure. Please just find out if you have it and let me know. Ok?"
"Ok," Ethan said weakly.
A week later Ethan called Lizzie and confirmed his greatest fear. He did in fact have HIV. Together they got over the shock of having a possibly fatal, life altering disease. They both had plans for the future and now they both knew they couldn't have children. Ethan is the only one Lizzie talks to in Hillridge because of their special bond. Ethan also swore he wouldn't tell anyone that he was in contact with Lizzie. He didn't know why Lizzie was so afraid to tell people but he respected her wishes.
Ethan became Lizzie's link to her family and friends. At the end of each week they had an hour-long conversation about the incidences that happened within Hillridge. It brought Lizzie a little bit of comfort knowing that life was still going on without her.
Miranda also 27 was a housewife with two kids. She married Danny her high school sweetheart and he became a successful lawyer. She loved her children and husband dearly. She was the perfect wife and wouldn't have her life any other way.
Gordo had moved to LA to pressure his dream of becoming a director. No one knew what he was doing because he didn't keep in touch with anyone. But no one heard or saw his name in the media so most people assumed his dream didn't come true.
Lizzie sat beside the phone on Sunday awaiting her weekly phone call from Ethan. And at precisely 8:30 the phone rang and a smile appeared on Lizzie's face. She got excited thinking about her talks with Ethan. It was like she was in middle school again but her dreams were coming true. She could talk to Ethan about anything she wanted and didn't have to worry about embarrassing herself.
"Lizzie," Ethan said solemnly. "There's been an accident."
Lizzie panicked. "It's my mom isn't it? Is she ok? What happened?"
"No it's not your family. It's Miranda and Danny. They were in a car accident last night. They're both in intensive care right now. Their future is uncertain but things aren't looking good right now."
"Oh no not Miranda," Lizzie cried. "She's too young to die and she has a daughter and a family. She can't die now. Danny either, they sounded so happy," Lizzie rambled on.
"Lizzie I think you should come to Hillridge. It may be asking a lot but you should come see Miranda. If you want to make peace with your past well now is the time," Ethan said frankly.
"Yeah maybe," Lizzie whispered and then hung up the phone.
Lizzie remembered the last time she saw Miranda and it was in one of the most unlikely places. Lizzie was on a business trip in Denver and she was at the airport heading to the car rental area when she heard her name.
"Lizzie? Lizzie McGuire is that you?"
Lizzie turned around and saw Miranda with a small child in her arms. She was a mother. "Miranda is that you?"
Miranda stopped dead in her tracks and looked as though she was about to cry but the moment quickly passed. "What are you doing here? I mean where have you been all these years?"
Lizzie gave a guilty smile. "I've uh.... I've been in Washington. I'm a teacher now," Lizzie lied.
"A teacher? Wow. We all thought you were dead," Miranda said seriously. "How could you do that to us? How could you disappear and not tell anyone where you went or that you were ok?"
"You wouldn't understand Miranda. I don't exactly feel like rehashing all that happened in the past. It's been 9 years," Lizzie said matter-of- factly.
"Yeah Lizzie it's been nine years!! You've been dead for nine years! You have a gravestone next to your grandparents. You were buried with all your belongings! How could you do this to your family? They hired a detective who searched for you for a year. They thought you were kidnapped. How can you live and not feel sorry for what you've done?"
Lizzie was sorry everyday of her life but what was done was done and she can't go back now. "I love my life Miranda. And I would hate to think what my life would have been life if I stayed in Hillridge. Hillridge had nothing to offer."
"I chose to stay in Hillridge and I couldn't be happier. You're selfish to think you were the only one hurting in Hillridge," Miranda shot back. "You just took the easy way out."
"Excuse me but my life has not been easy. I earned every cent I make today. Don't make assumptions when you have no idea what you're talking about Miranda."
"Ok fine but I'll tell you something I do know. I know you owe your family an explanation because there was no reason for you to leave them without any kind of warning. They deserve to know that you're still alive."
"Well I'm sure you're going to go home and tell everyone anyway so what's the point?"
"Oh no Lizzie I am not going to do you dirty work for you. You will have to tell your family. And I hope one day you will realize that you will have to return to Hillridge," Miranda gave a small smile and turned. "It was nice seeing you." Then she walked off with the child still in her arms.
End Flashback
Lizzie sighed and massaged her forehead. She left Miranda with a great burden. Either Miranda took the responsibility of telling the McGuire's of Lizzie's existence or she lives on as though she doesn't know which is just as worse. Lizzie needed to make a decision.
Lizzie picked up the phone and made a long distance phone call. "Suzette? It's Lizzie. I need your help," Lizzie said defeated.
