A/N: ONE SHOT, elaboration/elongation of a scene in my fan fic Solstice. This is a one shot that takes place after Snape takes Harry to the veil on Halloween (samhain) night and he sees Sirius and his mum briefly behind the veil. He's upset and Hermione adds comfort. This is an alternate chapter which gives me an opportunity to explore what might have happened as I explore possible romances for the sequel of Solstice. Hermione and Draco will be the next one shot exploration.

She shifted her position so his head was on her shoulder and he was stretched out beside her. She held him and stroked his hair. It felt so silky and she marveled how black the strands were.

"Ever since Sirius died I've wanted to talk to you and tell you how sorry I was. You were just so distant; constantly shutting me out everytime I tried to start a conversation. I felt terrible leaving for the summer holidays when I knew how much you were hurting. All summer long you barely answered my letters. I was so worried about you. Even this fall you were so distant, and when you overdosed on the potions I was so worried about you."

She placed a light kiss on his forehead.

She felt him swallow heavily and then he responded in a hollow voice. "Please Hermione; I don't want to talk about this anymore."

"I know you don't but just know if you ever do I'm here for you."

He looked up at her, his green eyes wide, he looked at her for a moment and then his gaze dropped to her lips. His heart was beating rapidly. He didn't know why he suddenly felt as he did. Hermione was his friend, Ron fancied her yet at that moment she was more attractive to him than Cho had ever been. He looked into her eyes again and felt lost in their warmth. He swallowed hard. Without thought his hand came up to her face and shakily his fingers curled around a long soft strand of her hair. He sat up and looked again into the dark depth of her eyes as he leaned over softly brushing her lips with his. She closed her eyes and sighed softly moving closer to him. He moved over her deepening the kiss as her hands shyly crept up his chest and wrapped around his neck pulling him closer. Harry moaned as her body molded to his.

Gasping painfully he pulled back, his body trembling. "I'm sorry Hermione, I don't know what came over me."

She looked into his green eyes with confusion. "Oh Harry, it must have just been the moment I guess. You don't have to apologize, I got caught up too." She stated sheepishly.

His heart was still racing and he looked anywhere but into her eyes. His knew his face was flushed and he was embarrassed by how his body had reacted to her.

She seemed equally embarrassed. She laughed lightly, "Let's not tell Ron about this."

He grinned softly. "Ok."

"Harry I am really sorry about Sirius."

His face darkened and he closed his eyes briefly. She put her arm around him again pulling him close. Her cheek once again resting against his forehead. Sleep overcame Harry as his eyes closed, feeling at peace in Hermione's arms.
