Silent Summer
"Who knows the damage you have inflicted on my horse..." Hermione droned on, trying to enrich Ron and Harry's minds. It was failing, for they had just ignored her as she read A Tale of Two Cities on the train ride to Hogwarts. An uneventful summer had past, for once not besieged by Death Eater attacks, just a silent summer. The threesome had thoroughly enjoyed the peace, but knew that it would not last. Voldemort did not ever let up on the attacks unless he was planning a heavy blow to the world or, as the case seemed to be more and more, to Harry. After his godfather died, Harry became so subdued, not joining in on the laughter or jokes, barely cracking a smile. His emerald eyes seemed to have lost their luster, an older appearance brought on by much turmoil.
Hermione sighed, and put the book away, realizing the futile attempts at making the boys smart were failing. She was content though; her life was finally in balance. In her second to last year at Hogwarts, she was ready to make a difference. Not that she hadn't made one before; she just wanted to help out in a way that just affected the school, not the whole world. Her relationship with Krum had come and gone, and with him she left behind memories of puppy love, and of tears that passed when he said good-bye. She was a prefect, made so last year, and this year she was going to actually be apart of the meetings, and not just do the tattletale job that every new prefect seems to be infected with, like a virus.
Ron was oblivious, not the stupid oblivious, but the oblivious that comes with seeing too much and finally starting to care. He only concentrated on Harry, helping him be the funny, shy child he had first met five years ago. His best friend, his roommate, the only guy that he will ever share his darkest secrets with, has changed. Ron was distraught of what had become of his friend. A living shell of a person, who only smiled when told, and laughed when appropriate. The light that once radiated from him was diminishing. Ron knew that that is what happens with getting older, but he still wanted the camaraderie that existed in the past. Being a prefect, Ron now had more responsibility than he ever wanted, but was handling it with surprising grace. Hermione and he have become closer in Harry's 'absence' but it was not enough. He wanted his old friend back.
Together, with all these thoughts swirling in their heads, they step off the train, ad head for a newly established year. "Let's make it count," Hermione says finally with a smile, knowing they knew exactly what she was talking about.
"To new found adventures!" Ron replies, punching a fist in the air. "To staying close with the ones you love," Harry lastly chimes in with a grin his best friends. In good spirits, they climb into the carriages and head to Hogwarts.
