Chapter 2 -

We come to a week after graduation. Chloe left for Metropolis and is currently living with her uncle. Clark and Lana haven't spoken since the kiss. Clark feels awful about it, but Lana doesn't want to see him.

Disclaimer: Again, I do not own any of these characters. I would however love to own Lex and maybe add in Clark with that as well.

Clark is up in his loft putting some of his things away in a box. Martha comes up and Clark quickly sees her. She smiles sweetly at him and gently sits on a chair. Clark looks at her and then looks at the items he's packing.

Clark: I never really thought that I'd actually be packing these things away.

Martha: Well, you didn't have to pack any of them. Your father and I still expect you to come by often.

Clark looks at Martha and smiles back at her.

Martha: Have you spoken to Lana?

Clark: No, she hasn't been returning any of my calls and every time I visit her at the Talon, she's always busy.

Martha: Maybe she just need time to think. I'm sure in time she'll realize how important your friendship is and she will be the one to call you.

Clark nods, but still looks a bit unsure.

------------------

Lana is at the Talon making a cappuccino. She hears a man behind her asking for a cup of coffee.

Lana: Yes, I'll be right with you.

She turns and realizes that it's Lex. Her face suddenly brightens and she rushes around the bar to hug him.

Lex: If I knew that this is the kind of welcome I'd be getting I would have come by sooner.

Lana: You are such a sight for sore eyes!

Lex: Great to see you too Lana!

Lana: What are you doing back in Smallville? I thought for sure that the big lights of Metropolis have gotten a good hold of you by now.

Lex: Ah, the sights here are always going to be better.

Lex looks on at Lana who is smiling at him bright and sweetly.

Lex: Listen, can you take a break?

Lana: Um, I wish I can, but we are kind of short of people.

Lex: Well, how about dinner?

Lana smiles and quickly accepts.

Lex: Great. I'll call you then.

Lex then smiles at Lana before he turns to walk away.

--------------------------

Nighttime and Jonathan is with Clark helping him load the truck with his suitcases. Clark is leaving the next morning, but Jonathan wants to get everything ready. After loading everything Jonathan notices that Clark has been particularly quiet. He's about to say something, when Pete suddenly drives up.

Pete: Good evening Mr. Kent!

Jonathan: Well hello there Pete! How is your mother?

Pete: Good, she's good.

Clark: What are you doing here Pete?

Pete: I just wanted to wish you luck on your trip.

Jonathan: Well, let me leave you two. Nice seeing you Pete.

Clark starts to walk towards his loft and Pete follows right behind him. As soon as they reach the loft, Pete sees Clark's telescope and goes to look in it.

Pete: Ah, I thought that you were taking this?

Clark: I was, but I decided to leave it here so my mom won't feel that I'm completely leaving them.

Pete: Hey I heard from Chloe this afternoon and she said that she'd meet you at the station at noon.

Clark: Yeah, she left a message with my mom.

Pete notices that Clark seems as if his mind is somewhere far away. He can tell that Lana is on his mind again.

Pete: Clark why don't you just call her again.

Clark: I called her this morning, but she said that she'd call me back. She hasn't. Pete, I really think I blew it. I know that it's wrong to start a relationship with Lana, but I never wanted to let go of the friendship.

Pete: Maybe this is a sign that it's really time to let go all together.

Clark: Yeah, maybe you're right.

------------------------

Lex is waiting outside a really fancy restaurant waiting for Lana. He is dressed in another dashing suit. He notices the time and realizes that Lana is a bit late. He takes out his cell phone and begins to dial her number. Before he could finish dialing, Lana drives up. As soon as she gets out of her car, Lex sees that she is still wearing the jeans and t-shirt she wore to work that day. Her hair is a bit messy, but somehow she manages to still look lovely. Lex smiles at her as she rushes towards him.

Lana: Lex I am so sorry that I'm late, but I had to wait....oh my, you look nice. Now I feel even worse.

Lex: Don't worry about it and thank you. Compliments like that can always erase the time waited. Shall we go inside?

Lana looks on inside the restaurant and notices that almost all the women are either in dresses or fancy attire. She suddenly feels more out of place and Lex notices this.

Lex: Lana, would you like to go somewhere else?

Lana: I was just thinking of the same thing. We can go down the street for pizza?

Lex: Sure, pizza sounds good. Let's go.

They both smile at each other while Lex leads her to his car.

---------------------------------

At the pizza place, Lana is stuffing herself. She has been working all day today not even taking time for a break. Somehow Lex finds this amusing and just starts to playfully laugh at her.

Lana: Yeah, laugh now Lex. Let me see you work a 12-hour shift without taking a single break!

Lex: Okay, I'm sorry about that! I just never thought anyone could look so cute stuffing down three slices of pizza in less than five minutes.

Lana crumbles her napkin and throws it at Lex.

Lana: Why are you here anyway? Are you checking up on me? Afraid that I might steal money again?

Lex: Of course not! I've just been hearing some news of your school plans and I'm a bit worried.

Lana: What do you mean?

Lex: I thought that you were moving to Metropolis with your college scholarship at hand?

Lana: Yeah well, things change. Besides I'm doing it for Nell. She needs me.

Lex: Well, it was Nell that actually called me. She wants you to go to college.

Lana: What about her? The Talon? Surely she can't handle that by herself.

Lex: I'm hiring a full time nurse and as far as the Talon, I'll get someone to help manage that as well.

Lana: Wow, it is really that easy.

Lex: It's only easy if you want it to be. But I take it you don't want it to be easy.

Lex looks onto Lana who is starting to be a bit teary eyed and gently lowers her head. Lex quickly takes her hand.

Lana: At first I thought I wanted to leave, but after hearing the news about Nell I decided to stay. It was a difficult decision, but I did it.

Lex: And what about now?

Lana: Now that I have a choice, I don't know. I think I'm more scared to leave.

Lex: Why be scared? I heard that Clark and Chloe would be there too. You'll have friends there.

Lana: Well I think Clark is part of the problem. I really don't think he'll want me there.

Lex: Look, you don't have to tell me what happened, but I know Clark. I know that when it comes to your friendship he's going to stop at nothing to keep it safe. I'm sure you know that too.

Lana looks into him and smiles back. She thinks for a moment and gently starts to wipe her tears. She looks up at the clock and then takes Lex's hand.

Lana: Lex, I have to go.

Lex smiles and nods at her. Lana rushes out of the restaurant and towards her car. It's already midnight; she hopes that he still awake.

-------------------

Clark is sleeping in his bedroom. He suddenly hears clicking noises from his windows. He gets up and sees who is out there. He sees Lana standing outside and he quickly becomes fully awake. He tells her to wait out the front door of the house and he'll meet her there. As soon as he gets out, an enormous smile from Lana greets him.

Lana: I'm sorry for coming by so late. I just wanted to catch you before you leave later on.

Clark: It's okay. I'm glad you're here. Lana I want.....

Lana: No Clark, let me go first. I need to let this out first before I lose my nerve.

Clark: Okay.

Lana: When we....well, when we...you know, kissed the other day it meant so much to me. I know that we already decided that we should just remain friends, but no matter how I tried, I just couldn't stop thinking about us. And when you kissed me, I thought you felt the same.

Clark: Lana I do feel the same.

Lana: What?

Clark: There's nothing more I want than to be with you, but I can never be the man you want me to be. I can never be fully honest with you. Although it didn't work for us, your friendship is still worth everything to me and I really don't want to lose that.

Lana: I don't want to lose that either.

Clark takes Lana and embraces her tightly. She starts crying. Clark lets her go and looks at her. He takes little bits of her hair away from her face.

Clark: I'll miss you.

Lana: Well e-mail me whenever you miss me okay?!?

Clark nods and they embrace once again.
