Running Away

Chapter 7: It Was All My Fault *~*~*~*~*~*

*********Squall's POV***********

When all four of us ate lunch together, I couldn't help but watch Yuffie. To me, she looked so beautiful eating. However, I was wondering why she wasn't talking. She seemed like she didn't want to do anything at all, just eat and think to herself.

For some reason, when Yuffie and Aerith came to sit down, I thought I saw Yuffie smile at me. That sure is a first; usually she starts a fight with me. But what could she have been smiling about?

After lunch, I went for a walk by myself. I walked through the third district, just walking around, minding my own business.

"Leon!" Somebody called. I looked to see Aerith walking towards me. I waited for her, and she came up to me smiling.

Everybody seemed happy today, I wonder why.

We walked side by side, in an awkward silence.

Aerith finally broke the silence when we walked through the district door, and we walked into the second district.

"Leon? Can I ask you something?" She asked politely. I looked at her, and she seemed nervous about something.

I nodded, and looked straight ahead, watching where I was walking.

"Well, uh, "she stuttered. I waited. "Do you love Yuffie?" she finally blurted out. What?

My head jerked towards her. I lied quickly, "No, why?" she better not be like Cloud.

"Oh, uh, just...just wondering." She said looking away. I frowned. Why did she ask me that?

We walked along the street in another silence. I was puzzled, but hated myself for saying that.

Again, Aerith asked another question, "Do you hate Yuffie?" she asked looking up at me. I looked down at her. "Why are you asking me these questions?" I asked.

"I'm just curious, that's all." She said, not making eye contact.

I frowned a little, and then answered her question. "No, I don't hate Yuffie." Well at least that was the truth.

"Really?" Aerith asked surprised. "That's not what Yuffie had heard-" I stopped and looked at her. Aerith, realizing what she said, covered her mouth quickly.

"What did Yuffie hear?" I asked. I never said that I hated Yuffie before, but somehow it seemed familiar.

"Oh, um nothing," Aerith said, uncovering her mouth. "It just blurted out, Yuffie really didn't hear anything." She started walking away, but I grabbed her arm. "What did Yuffie hear?" I repeated. Aerith is a really bad liar.

Aerith tried to get out of my grasp but couldn't. She sighed and gave in. Aerith was always the one not to get into fights, and always told the truth like Yuffie. "Okay, but you can't tell Yuffie I said this to you."

I looked into her eyes, seeing the truth. My grip loosened just a little on her arm.

Aerith closed her eyes then opened them again looking into mine. I waited for the answer when Aerith finally talked.

"Well," Aerith said, starting. "Yuffie and I had a talk this morning. She said that she heard...that she heard you said you hated her."

I looked bewildered. "I never said that."

"It doesn't matter, lets just-"

"No, when did I say something like that?" I asked.

Aerith paused. "She said she heard you say that when you talked with Cloud...three years ago."

I looked into her eyes, and found out that she was telling the truth. My grip loosened a lot. Was she there when Cloud asked me if I had feelings for Yuffie? I don't hate her; I just didn't want to tell anybody the truth yet.

Wait! Yuffie had heard me talking about that three years ago. If she left on that night when Cloud and I talked, is it possible she could've left because of...?

"Is that why she left?" I asked, feeling guilty.

Aerith looked away. "Look, it's nothing, I swear. Lets just go find Cloud and Yuffie."

She tried to go, but I kept my hand on her arm. "Aerith," I said, not letting go.

Aerith tried to get out of my grasp, but failed. She was not looking at me, and didn't answer. I waited there for an answer. When I found out that she wasn't going to talk, I said, "Aerith, is that why Yuffie left. Because she overheard me and Cloud talking?"

She didn't answer. Her head was facing the ground.

Why the hell was she not answering me? I grew angry, with her and myself.

I let go of her arm, knowing that I wont get an answer. "Fine, I'll just go ask Yuffie herself."

I started walking away when Aerith grabbed my arm and held me back. "No, don't," she said.

"Why?" she let go of my arm as I turned around to face her.

"I don't want Yuffie to know I told you all of those things. Listen, I'll tell you as long as you don't talk to her about it." Aerith looked up into my eyes. I sighed and nodded.

Aerith took a deep breath. "Well, when Yuffie heard that you said you hated her...well.... she ran away because of that." I looked at her shocked.

"Did she really leave because of that?"

Aerith nodded sadly. She wasn't looking at me anymore, more at the ground.

Guilt filled inside me. After all that time looking for her, Yuffie only left because of me. Because of something I didn't mean to say.

I started to walk away; I needed to walk alone for a while.

When I took a couple of steps, I heard Aerith say, "Leon?" I stopped and turned towards her.

"Please don't tell Yuffie any of this. She really didn't want anybody to know. I'm not sure if she wanted me to know." Aerith looked at me pleadingly. I nodded and started walking away again.

I felt terrible. I walked alone throughout the second and third district. My hands were in my jacket pockets, and I was looking at the ground as I walked.

*~*~*~*~*

Like it? I know, I ask that same question EVERY SINGLE chapter! But don't worry; you'll only have to read me say it one more time because next chapter is the last one! Whoohoo!

I know this story is pretty short, but honestly, I only knew the beginning and the end, so I couldn't put much in the middle. During this chapter, I made it up as I went along. So...yeah.

Next Chapter: Can't say cuz it's my last chapter ^_^. Anyway, this time, I'll KNOW what I'm going to write. : D

Love all of the reviews! Thanks a whole bunches!
