Running Away

Chapter 8 (Last Chapter!): At Long Last

*~*~*~*~*

**********Yuffie's POV**********

It was now night, and I was walking throughout the districts. I could feel the light breeze flow through my hair as I walked slowly throughout the place. The wind started picking up a little, and it tickled my soft skin.

Was it right to tell Aerith all of those things this morning? I mean, I just got back yesterday, and today I had told her of all of my secrets! But I guess it was all right, I know Aerith would never tell anybody. Not even if she was threatened. (A/N: Hahaha...)

I looked up and saw clouds forming in the sky. I'm pretty sure everyone was in the fourth district; nobody was here in the third district except me. Every single footstep that I make echoes throughout the emptiness. But in a way it felt kind of comforting...strangely.

I walked in front of the Lady and the Tramp light. The glow felt so warming to me. I just stood there for a while, looking at it, dazzling at the beauty.

I heard footsteps behind me and a strange noise. I turned around sharply to see Squall walking through the district door. My heart pumped faster. Why?

"Hi Squall!" I yelled waving my hand in the air. His head turned towards me and I ran up to him.

My footsteps echoed. He had stopped, and stood there, waiting for me. I caught up with him, and then bent down, getting my breath. After a second, I stood back up and said, "What's up?" in my usual tone that I had before I had left to Earth.

Squall just shrugged his shoulders slightly, and started walking. I started walking next to him, and looked at his face. I could've looked at it forever, but my mind was troubled. His face was screwed up. He looked confused and yet...sad. He was walking in a slower pace than he usually does, and kept his head facing the ground. What the?

"Uh, Squall?" I said. "Are you okay?"

He looked at me. "Yeah, sure." He said. Uh oh, something definitely is wrong! He let me call him Squall! Usually he'd just tell me to call him Leon!

I sighed, and walked along with him, knowing that something was bothering him.

But he would tell me, wouldn't he? I mean, we were partners before, and probably still are...in a strange sort of way.

Then again, why would he want to tell an annoying nineteen year-old his secrets or whatever he wasn't telling? I mean, I'm just an annoying brat that he hates-

However, Aerith had said that Squall was worried about me. My shoulders slumped. If he said he hated me long ago, then why did Aerith say he was worried about me? I thought he would've been happy I left. Happy that the annoying teenager wasn't there to bug him anymore.

We walked close together, our arms barely touching. When our arms did touch, accidentally, I felt a little shock run throughout it. I never had these shocks before, what was happening now?

Squall and I walked along in an awkward silence, not knowing what to say. Well at least I didn't know what to say to him. He probably is thinking about a dozen things right now. I looked over at his face again. Yep, seems like he's thinking about a lot.

Finally breaking this silence, I asked "Are you sure you're all right?" my voice was kind of annoyed. Probably about him not telling me anything.

He did a slight nod. I frowned a little. He wasn't all right. Usually right now, we'd be having a fight, but I guess he's not in the 'mood'.

"No you're not." I said, still looking at his confused face. Wait. Was that confusion or sadness?

"Yes I am, alright?" he said obviously annoyed. I still had my frown on, not believing a word he was saying.

The wind picked up some more, and it felt like it was getting colder by the second. I looked up to see clouds forming in the sky.

Then, I felt droplets of water splashing down on my face.

"Uh, I think we should go inside." I said. Squall slightly nodded, and we both started walking slowly towards the Hotel.

We walked in silence as the rain started coming down harder. Soon it seemed like ice cubes were getting thrown down at us. I shivered.

"Yuffie?" Squall asked me. I looked at him through the pouring rain.

"Yep?"

"Uh, do you think I hate you?" What kind of question was that? But the answer is...yes.

"Why-why do you ask?" I didn't look at him. I'm going to have to start lying, and I know I am bad at that, so I might as well start by not making eye contact.

"Just-just curious." He just said. Hm, didn't Aerith said she was curious before?

Wait! Did Aerith tell Squall? I know that Squall would never be asking me these questions, never!

But I didn't want to ask.

"Well... I really don't know how to answer." All right, pretty good start, but I'm still confused by his question.

"What do you mean?" Squall said.

"I-I really don't know if you hate me or not." Ok Yuffie, just don't keep eye contact no matter what, and everything will be all right.

The rain that seemed like ice cubes kept falling, and why did it take us this long.

Then I looked down at my feet, they were going in tiny baby steps without me knowing it! I looked over at Squall's, and his were doing the same. I picked my pace up a bit, and looked up. Oops. I quickly looked away again as we continued our walk through the icy rain.

"You think I hate you don't you?" What is with questions like these lately?

"No, I don't think that..." I trailed off. Ok, that was one of my signs of me lying and I know that Squall knows it. Great job Yuffie. But at least I'm not making any sort of eye contact.

I could feel his eyes blazing through me even when I'm not looking. Even through this heavy rain.

"You're lying Yuffie." He said as a statement.

"No I'm not!"

"Then look at me in the eye." I groaned inside my head.

"Look Squall, let's just head back, it's freezing cold out here." I didn't even know where we were going. You couldn't see much through the 'ice cubes'.

I shivered, and Squall walked a little closer to me. My heart thumped, he was going to find out.

"Look me in the eye first."

"Why should I?"

"To see if you're telling the truth."

Uuhhhh... I started walking a little faster, but he stayed by me anyway. "Yuffie," he said a little harsh.

I slowly turned my head towards him. He was right next to me, and our faces almost touched. My heart was pumping every second, and I felt uneasy. I felt my cheeks go red as soon as our eye met.

"You're lying," he stated as a fact.

"Look it's nothing," I said, walking a little further away.

But yet again, Squall stayed close by my side.

"How could you think that?" Why does he even bother asking me these questions? Somehow, I felt we had just passed the Hotel. Shoot, I'm not paying attention to where I'm going. Besides, how can you see?

"Uh Squall? Do you know where we're going?"

"Don't change the subject," he said harshly. "Why did you think I hated you?"

That's it. He wants an answer, and then he'll get an answer. No matter how much I say, I don't care. I need him to stop bugging me, and I need to get this out.

I stopped and looked at him through the rain. I had a fierce look on my face, and he seemed kind of uneasy by it.

"Okay, you want to know?" I asked loudly. My voice was fierce along with my face. I don't care. "You know what? I did think you hated me! And I still do! So stop asking me the same question! Why the heck do you want to know?" I was practically yelling out loud, throwing my arms everywhere. I continued without waiting for his answer. "You know, you even said it yourself. That you hated me, and you didn't care for me-"

Squall must've realized what I was talking about. "Yuffie, that was three years ago!"

"So what? All you even think of me is a little annoying girl!"

"I don't think that-"

"Oh yes you do! All you said was that I was annoying, that you hated me, and- and" I couldn't bring myself to say that he said he didn't love me. Tears formed in my eyes, and soon came down. Squall saw this and put his arms on my shoulders.

"Yuffie, calm down." He said.

I shrugged his hands off. "No, I wont! Do you know how much that hurt? To hear you say I was annoying and that you hated me?" I glared at him.

"Look Yuffie, I didn't mean it-"

"To hell you didn't!" Oh my gosh, did I just swear? Now I know I'm REALLY losing it.

Tears kept coming down my face, but I continued. "That had hurt so much! Want to know something else? Your words are why I left!" I yelled that last bit out so loud that it had hurt my voice. The raindrops mixed with my tears, and now I didn't feel cold. Now I'm filled with anger.

Squall kept staring at me, listening to everything I said.

"Sure, I thought that you thought I was annoying," I said, "But I didn't know you 'hated' me for it! And to top that all off, you said you didn't love me! I can't believe that I even love you still-"

My eyes widened, and I covered my mouth quickly. My eyes seemed to be out of my sockets. Squall's eyes widened too. He took a step closer. Afraid, I took a step back. He then took another, and I took another back. Soon, I started backing away a couple of steps, and then I turned around and ran, not caring where I went.

"Yuffie!" he called. I was sobbing so hard now.

Now that Squall had heard that, he's going to never talk to me again! What a way to open my big mouth! I kept running, not wanting to slow down.

Tears came down my face, and I knew I looked a mess. My clothes soaked to the bone, my hair sopping wet against my face, and my eyes and face red from the tears I've cried.

I heard running footsteps behind me. Still running, I turned my head to see Squall catching up to me.

Oh god, I kept running. "Yuffie, come back!" he called again. He was closer this time, and advancing on me quickly.

I kept crying, feeling as if my crying will never stop. Soon, an arm went out and grabbed my shoulder, pulling me back.

I gasped, as Squall pulled me facing him. He held my arms tightly like before, not letting go. I tried escaping, thrashing everywhere. I don't want Squall to hate me any more than he does.

"Yuffie, please stop." His voice was almost...pleading.

I did, but I looked at the ground, crying. Tears seemed to be more on my face than the heavy rain.

I was sobbing uncontrollably.

"Yuffie, stop crying." Squall said softly.

I was still looking at the puddle of water that I was standing in. I was helpless in his arms. His grip loosened a little, but I didn't run. I couldn't I was too weak from the running and sorrow.

We stood there a moment, not saying anything at all.

"Yuffie, look at me." Why was he speaking so softly? I thought he'd be yelling at me so loud that my ears would burst. But instead he was doing this soft voice that I never heard before...except when I was sick.

I slowly pulled my head up, expecting anything. But what happened next, I didn't expect at all.

Squall's face seemed to be getting closer to mine. Then I could feel his warm breath tickling my skin. Soon, our lips met, in a sweet movement.

I was shocked, but all in all, I closed my eyes and kissed him back. His arms slithered down to my waist and pulled my closer. After a second, my arms soon went up and wrapped them selves around his neck as he pulled me as close as possible to him.

What was a sweet kiss turned out to be a desperate loving one. Our soaked bodies were pulled right up against each other as we embraced. The rain seemed to be settling down, and squall and I continued our kiss. We didn't care for anything around us, just ourselves. I wasn't even shocked any more.

In his arms was one of the safest places I've ever been. I felt so secure.

We started pulling back, our foreheads against each other. Now, I could look into his eyes, and not worry. With his eyes staring at me, I think I could have melted.

"What was that for?" I asked politely. My voice was no longer harsh, but it seemed as if it was sweet and gentle, like how my voice has always been.

Squall smiled. I haven't seen one of those since I've been here. " The reason why I said you were annoying, that I hated you, and that I didn't love you was to get Cloud off of the track." I looked at him puzzled. Our foreheads were still pressed together. "What I mean is," he continued, "That I didn't mean any of those things."

"Really?" My tears had stopped, and I had just noticed that it was just sprinkling now and not that heavy rain.

He shook his head, still keeping our foreheads together. "I just said those things because I felt it was too soon for me to say any of those things out loud. The truth is, that I don't think you're annoying, I never did or will hate you, and..." he paused, and kept looking at me in the eye. " I do love you."

Did he just say that? That's what I've always wanted to hear! (A/N: ahhhh! Lol)

He smiled as he leaned his head in for another kiss. This one was gentler than the other one, but I loved it all the same.

We pulled away again as I said, "I love you too."

We stayed like that for a long time, and finally headed back to the Hotel room, with his arm around me.

Whoohoo! The end!

Sorry if it sounded a bit... 'mushy', but I hoped you liked it anyway!

I think I might write another Squaffie fic about Squall and Yuffie going to a new world, and getting trapped there. Or something like that, lol.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE REVIEWS! Honestly, when I wrote the first chapter, I didn't think anybody would've liked it. But now I'm so happy! Thanks again! I love you all, lol.
