Chapter 5: Briefing On A Rainy Day

****

Sighing, Betsy flicked through the TV channels as she sat in a white leather couch in the main lounge room. Glancing at the window, she sighed again at the rain drizzling down against the window pain and the grey sky, making her feel slightly depressed.

Reaching for the bag of chips next to her, she scooped up a handful and continued staring blankly at the television which was currently blaring an add for dog food.

Bounding in, Sally snatched the chips from where they were seated and sank down where they had been. Holding them on her lap, she hungrily dug in and shoved a handful in her mouth. "Whatcha watchin'?" She asked as best she could without spraying chips everywhere.

Staring at her, Betsy took a couple of seconds to actually work out what she said. As she opened up her mouth to politely ask what she had asked, Sally interrupted speaking slightly slower and minus the mouthful of food, pointing at the TV. "I said what are you watching?"

"I don't know." She shrugged screwing up her face as she tried to work out what show was on. "Some sort of soapie I guess." Both girls stared at the screen. "It's Passions." Sally finally said triumphantly. "What?" She added as Betsy raised a brow at her. "I mean, I think it's Passions. Heh, what would I know about soapies."

Betsy laughed out loud, shaking her head. "Skids is a Passions fan, who would have guessed?" Sally smiled sheepishly. "So I've watched it a few times, so sue me." Shovelling another handful of chip into her mouth, Betsy used this interval to ask "So, where's Ali and Sarah."

"Fighting somewhere I guess." She shrugged accidentally spraying a shower of chip over Betsy. "Oops. Sorry about that." "That's okay." Betsy growled, wiping the glob of gunk from her face. "Urgh, take smaller mouthfuls next time. And don't talk why you got food in your mouth." She suggested.

"Yes mother." Sally replied, rolling her eyes sarcastically. Betsy opened her mouth to respond when Ali burst into the room.

"WILL YOU QUIT IT SARAH?? I'M NOT SCARED OF YOUR STUPID BONES!"

"YOUR THE ONE WHO FRIED THE CURTAINS!"

A stray bone spear came whistling into the room and embedded itself into the wall with a dull thud, vibrating slightly.

"Sarah, no throwing your limbs in the house!" Betsy snapped, getting to her feet as she attempted to pull it out, but it appeared to be very stubborn.

"Yeah." Sally added, twisting around to glare at her. "You could have broken the telly."

"Not to mention the expensive antiques." Betsy added, giving up on the bone and sitting down on the chair. Maybe no one would notice. She glanced at it again. Who was she kidding? She buried her head in her hands.

"Now look, you've made her break down again! That's the second time this day!" Sally scolded, pointing at Betsy.

"So sorry." Sarah snapped at her sarcastically. "Maybe if light bulb over there would quit the... are you glowing?" She asked raising a brow in question.

"Uh." Ali glanced down at herself and shrugged. "So what if I am? You got a problem with that?"

"You got a problem with me?"

"Maybe I do."

"THAT'S IT!"

Betsy sighed at the sound of crashes which seemed to have become normal in the past week. At that moment lightning flashed close to the window making Ali scream. That was when the lights flickered and went out. When the TV flicked off, the girls stood in the dark for a couple of seconds before Sally screamed. "NO NOT THE TV!"

"Ali, could we have some light please?" Betsy asked patiently. "Uh, sure" she agreed.

Balls of soft light floated around the room, slowly rotating and bumping off each other.

"See my powers do come in handy." Ali sniffed as she poked her tongue out at Sarah. "Whatever." was the only reply she received in return.

Betsy still on the couch motioned for the other two to sit down. "Well we're gonna go to school tomorrow and I guess we're supposed to learn to... not hate each other when we begin our team work."

"Whatever." Sarah said again, sitting down on the second couch. "This lady's got a thing with white, ain't she?"

"Ain't she?" Ali repeated sitting down on the same couch but making sure she put some distance between them both. "And that's the second time you said whatever."

"Oh shut up, both of you." Sally snapped, obviously put off at the loss of her beloved TV.

Snorting, Sarah glanced at Betsy. "Didn't you mention something about other teams of mutants earlier? What, are we meant to battle them or something?"

"No," Betsy quickly said. "We're simply observing. "And no revealing our own powers." She added looking directly at Sally.

Sally looked up noticing 3 pairs of eyes glaring at her. "What?!" She snapped, "It's the eyes, isn't it? I'll wear sunglasses I'll swear."

"It's not that." Betsy said dryly but continued not wanting to start another argument. "I've got the briefing papers here if you want to see them.."

"What, they say, like, all the powers and stuff?" Ali interrupted.

"Yeah, I guess so." Betsy slowly said, a little confused. "It's each person biography if that's what you mean."

"Hm, any hot guys?" Sally asked bluntly already leafing through the pile.

Betsy shrugged and pulled the files out of Sally's reach and split them into two groups. "There's two groups. The Xmen and the Brotherhood. Sarah, Ali, your on the brotherhood. Sally, our target is the Xmen. Understand?"

Each girl nodding, she handed out the files. "Don't get them grubby either." She grumbled as an afterthought, eyeing Sally still eating chips.

"Stress less." Sally quipped, bouncing over to her and looking over her shoulder. "Who's the guy with shades, he's pretty decent looking."

"That's Scott Summers aka Cyclops." Betsy said patiently. "From what I've heard him and..." Shuffling through the files, she pulled out another one with a red headed girl on the front. "He's dating Jean Grey."

"We'll see about that." Sally said with a smirk, looking at distaste at the picture of Jean. "What, she doesn't have a codename?"

Betsy shook her head. "Not that I know of. Guess Jeanie isn't creative enough." Sally laughed, then sobered looking thoughtfully at them. "What's their powers?"

"Optic blasts," She pointed at Scott. "And telekinesis and telepathy." she pointed at Jean. "Like you, huh?" Sally asked, tilting her head.

"Sorta." Betsy shrugged. "We both use it in different ways though." Shaking her head, she glanced down and took out two more pictures. "This ones Katherine Pryde aka Shadowcat," She held up a file with a picture of a brown haired girl. "And this one is simply, eh, Rogue." She held up a picture of a auburn haired girl with white streaks.

"Cool hair." Sally commented, Betsy wasn't sure if she was sarcastic or not so she carried on.

"Shadowcat can phase." She glanced up looking at a blank faced Sally. "Um, walk through things." Sally almost choked on a mouthful of chips. "WALK THROUGH THINGS? Well that's just going to make my power useless."

"I think your safe." Betsy said, glancing down at the information. "It says she can only walk through solid things. She can't go through lasers."

"Oh." Sally said, still sounding a little unsure.

"And Rogue has absorption powers. If she touches you, she sucks you dry and steals your powers. Be careful of her."

"No problem." Sally said with a sly smile. "Like to see her get through my force fields."

Ignoring her comment, Betsy wiped out the last two files. "This ones Bobby Drake aka Iceman. Obviously he does weird things with ice."

"What's he gonna do? Throw snowballs at us?" Sally asked, smirking. Betsy frowned at her slightly. "Sally, we're meant to be taking this seriously."

"Sorry, go on." Sally sighed, not sounding at all sorry. Suddenly noticing the last one, she laughed. "Whoa, a blue dude. What, he's just gonna get around in high school like that, huh? And you nag me about my eyes."

"He has an image inducer. He'll look like this." Betsy replied flipping to another page. "Oh." Sally said thoughtfully. "Hey, why can't I have one of those? Then I could have different coloured eyes! Maybe I could have like yellow, or a cool colour like purple too! Or both!"

"Uh, Sally," Betsy interrupted before she could get even more excited. "What would be the point of an image inducer for your wild green eyes if you got a pair of even more wild purple and yellow eyes?"

Sally seemed to ponder this for a minute. "Good point." She said a little saddly. "Well, what can blue boy do?" "Teleport." Was Betsy's answer.

"Great." Sally said, folding her arms in front of her. "Just great. He can get through my force fields!"

"Sally, your not the only one on this team, we can handle him. Trust me." She smiled, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "Trust the Bayville Belles."

"Bayville Belles?" Sally repeated doubtfully. "Yeah, that's the name of our team." Betsy said just a little too enthusiastically.

"Um, your asking me to trust those two?" Sally nodded somewhere over Betsy's shoulder. Betsy glanced over where she was looking at, frowning.

BOOM

She winced, turning back around. "Good point."

"DAMN IT SARAH DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO PROVOKE ME?"

"PROVOKE YOU? YOU'RE A MANIAC! YOU DON'T NEED PROVOKING TO DO SOMETHING STUPID!"

Betsy walked over and sighed as she looked down at the pile of ash that was once a pile of files. "Don't tell me... Ali.."

"Burnt the briefing files to a crisp, uh huh, better believe it." Sarah said glaring at Ali. Ali glanced down at the floor then at Betsy. "Sorry, I got carried away again." She glared at Sarah and quickly stuck her tongue out. Sarah poked her tongue back out at her, tongue ring and all.

Taking a deep breath, Betsy tried to figure out what had happened. "So am I going to actually want to know what happened, or.."

"No" came the simultaneous reply. "Right." Betsy said, shaking her head. "Well, did you at least see the subjects?"

"Yep." Ali said enthusiastically. She began ticking off fingers that she held up. "A fat guy, a slimy guy, an earthquake guy, a speedy guy, a chick that makes things go boom and... and a..." She looked over at Sarah for help. Sarah shrugged. "Some other chick with a power that we're not too sure on." "Random powers." Ali supplied. "Yeah." Sarah agreed, looking at Betsy. "Random powers."

Betsy sighed and wondered off, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I think we need some real authority figures around here besides me. I'm only a year older then you all for Christs sakes! I'm too young to deal with this!" She threw her hands up in the air then sank to the floor, burying her face in her hands.

"That's the third time this day." Sally whispered to Ali. Ali simply nodded and twirled her finger around next to her temple. "I think she's a little cuckoo."
