Chapter 6: Getting To Know The Enemy

*****

"Please welcome our new student, Class." A tired monotone broke through the class causing heads to rise in curiosity. "Elisabeth Braddock. Please, take a seat dear." The teacher turnt back to scrawling on the blackboard.

"Call me Betsy." She replied but glanced around the class for a seat. Smiling as she noticed a familiar red head and a guy with shades, she headed towards the back where they were sitting, both oblivious to the world except for apparently their tabletops.

As she passed a desk, a hand shot out and wrapped around her wrist causing her to jerk back. She glanced down at a silver haired guy who winked and smiled at her. "Hi there, I'm Pietro, you might not want to go down there." He nodded to Scott and Jean in the corner. "Dork city. Stick with me, Babe."

Betsy gazed across the room at where a bunch of girls had stopped giggling and were glaring at her. She didn't have to be telepathic to know that they were jealous. Rolling her eyes, she pulled away from his grasped and shook her head. "Sorry, Luv. I'm not interested."

Instead, she made a beeline for Scott. Plopping down in the empty seat next to him, she lowered her eyelids and looked at him through her thick eyelashes, smiling seductively. "Hello there." She drawled in her British accent. "I'm Betsy."

Scott swallowed and attempted to smile back. A small snort caused both of them to turn to where Jean was, her green eyes narrowed. "Can we help you?" She shot at Betsy.

Betsy smirked at her. "Well you can't." She said sweetly. Looking at Scott, she raised a brow. "Is she your girlfriend?" She watched in amusement as they both blushed and glanced at each other then away again.

"Uh, no. I've already got a boyfriend." Jean said, flipping her hair over her shoulder. Betsy simply smiled at her, watching her skin turnt almost the same colour as her vibrant red hair.

"In that case." She began slowly, eyeing Scott. "How about a date?" She asked, tilting her head innocently. "I need someone to show me around since I'm new and all."

Jean's eyes widened and she coughed slightly. "No! You can't!" She calmed slightly, her green eyes piecing into Betsy's. "Scott and I have a study date tonight. Don't we Scotty?" There was no way she was letting this British hussy get her talons into something that was obviously hers.

Scott looked at Jean then back at Betsy. "I'd love that, Betsy." He sighed internally at Jeans small gasp. He was growing tired of being her little lap dog, no matter how much he really liked her. "Jean." He said patiently. "It's only a study date. And like you said, you have a boyfriend."

Jean tried to swallow the painful lump in her throat and glanced down at her book, picking up her pen and scribbling a few answers down to hide her hurt. "Yeah. It isn't that important, go ahead."

Betsy exhaled feeling slightly guilty as she felt her pain, but quickly forgot about it as she looked back at Scott. He was quite a catch and it was so much fun stirring stuff up between them. And this way I get to keep an eye at him at the same time. It's a win-win situation. She reminded herself. Besides, she deserved a little fun after putting up with the bunch of delinquents that made up the Bayville Belles. Speaking of which...

*Hey girls, how you getting along with your targets?* She asked telepathically, adding a little smugly, *I just scored a date with Cyclops. You should see Phoenix, she's absolutely fuming! I took him right out from under her little nose.*

******

*Trust you, Betsy. You have all the luck. Knowing you, he's probably hot as.* Ali glanced across the room at the guy she was assigned to. *Why do I have to keep an eye on the creepy guy? It's no fair.* She shuddered visibly. *He's all slimy and stuff.*

Kitty, the girl who was sitting in the desk next to her followed Ali's gaze to Todd. "He's so irksome, isn't he?" She whispered with a giggle, indicating at Todd.

Ali jumped and smiled slightly back at her. "Yeah. He's so totally gross." Both girls shivered. Kitty turnt back to her conversation with the guy sitting next to her, Robby or something. Chewing her pencil, she raised her brows. "Did I just see him eat a fly!" She exclaimed.

Kitty looked at her then back at Bobby, silently asking for help. She didn't know if it would be a good idea to explain the mutant deal to a friend she only just made. Luckily, she didn't have to.

Ali noticed the glance her and Bobby swapped and mistook it for one of thinking she was crazy. "Uh, never mind." She quickly said. "Must have just seen things. Not that I do see things. I know! It was a trick of the light!"

She smiled triumphantly as she heard Bobby and Kitty sigh in relief. That was a close one. She thought to herself. Lucky I'm so smooth or else I'd be in it deep.

She jumped as the sound of the shrill bell rang through the room and students began roughly throwing things together and moving out. Ali slowly picked up her things as she watched Todd leave the room. She knew she was meant to follow him around but she really didn't want to. What if someone saw her? They might think she liked him or something.

"Ali?" A voice brought her back to reality.

"Uh, yeah?" She asked, slowly shaking her head. "Are you alright?" Kitty asked in concern, leaning in to look at her.

"Yeah fine."

"You just look a little, you know, out of it."

"Just... thinking." Came her lame response.

"Yeah, something foreign to you, huh Kit?" Bobby jeered, dodging as she swung at him.

"Shut up Bobby." She groaned. "Anyway, you wanna come sit with us Ali? I mean you don't have to if you don't want to, but, like, you know.."

"Don't blame you if you don't want to. Kitty can be a little weird." This time, Bobby didn't manage to dodge Kitty in time.

"Ow. I deserved that."

Ali giggled and nodded. "Of course I'll sit with you guys. Not like I know anyone else."

Sarah walked across the cafeteria with the mutant she was trailing, Wanda. She isn't that bad, she thought idly as she slid her tray down at the same table Wanda did with familiar faces sitting at it.

"Lance, Freddy, Todd and my idiot brother, Pietro." Wanda pointed to each person as she introduced them. "This is Sarah."

Sarah nodded and poked at her food with her fork. "What is this stuff meant to be? I think it's still alive."

"Tell me about it." Lance groaned, pushing his spoon around in what looked like mashed potatoes swimming in grey gravy. "Who would eat this stuff. It's practically uneatable."

There was silence across the table as everyone looked at Freddy. "What?" He asked swallowing a bite. "Never mind." Wanda sighed, rolling her eyes. "Freddy has an iron gut." she explained to Sarah.

Lance peered at Pietro and narrowed his eyes. "You Okay, Tro?" He asked. Everyone looked up at him suspiciously.

"Yeah, I'm fine." He muttered darkly, forking some food into his mouth. "What's everyone looking at? I mean I'm perfect and all, but sheesh."

Freddy murmured something and then smiled sheepishly, swallowing. "It's just that you flirt with anything in a skirt. Your not." he said, pointing at Sarah.

Sarah looked blankly at him then down at her tattered black jeans and up again. "I'm not wearing a skirt." She said in a monotone.

Freddy smiled nervously. "Uh, figure of speech." Who knew how crazy this girl was? She was Wanda's friend after all.

Two blondes suddenly slipped onto the end of the seat, laughing maniacally. "That was great!" Tabby laughed, high fiving the other girl. "Trashing Kelly's car was heaps of fun. You up for tonight?"

"Yeah!" The other girl laughed. "If that was fun, Plan B's going to be even better then I thought!"

"Sally?" Sarah asked, glancing up in surprise, her reflection mirrored in Sally's sunglasses.

"What are you doing here?" Sally exclaimed, looking around at the group, as it slowly dawned on her where she really was. "Oh..."

"What's going on?" Wanda asked suspiciously.

"Yeah.." Muttered Lance. "You know her?" He asked Sarah.

"Know her?" Sally echoed. "Uh, of course I don't! Never seen her in my life! Who are you again?"

Sarah slapped herself on the forehead with the palm of her hand. Trust Sally to screw everything up. "We're cousins." She explained to everyone. "Sally's just a little, how do I put it? Not all there."

Sally frowned at her and then sighed. "Oooohhh, yes. Cousin! We're cousins. I remember now. Long lost cousins. Sarah! My dear cousin." She lunged across the table, scattering food everywhere and wrapped her arms around Sarah's neck in a tight hug.

"Sally. You're. Choking me!" Sarah rasped, struggling to unhook her arms.

Wanda raised a brow and coughed slightly. "I think your cousin is a bit nutty, Sarah."

Todd, Fred, Pietro and Lance all exchanged glances and sighed simultaneously. Wanda and Tabby had found 'friends' that appeared to be every bit as insane as them.

"You never answered our question." Lance pointed out to Pietro. "What's got you all down?"

Pietro muttered something and Todd started laughing. "What was that? You better say it louder, they didn't hear, yo." Pietro shot a withering glare at Todd and his grip tightened on his fork. "Shut up, Todd." He growled through clenched teeth.

"What happened?" Tabby asked curiously. "I think I missed something. Me and Sal, you should've seen us! Who knew bubble wrap could be used like that to trash cars!" Her and Sally started cackling and everyone raised there brows.

"Right..." Todd said, then smiled. "Pietro got rejected! And... the chick that rejected him asked Summers out on a date!"

Everyone laughed at Pietro's expense. "Who was it?" Asked Sarah, smiling widely.

"Some Asian chick with purple streaked hair. Betty or something like that." Answered Todd, struggling not to laugh again.

"It's not funny." Pietro sniffed dramatically, throwing his hands up in the air. "My reputation could be ruined. Unless.." He began. "I could charm her. I have got plenty of charm."

"Of course you do." Wanda said dryly, rolling her eyes. "More charm then a dead fish."

Sarah and Sally looked at each other and bit their lips. 'Betsy' mouthed Sarah and Sally smiled evilly and nodded. Things just took a weird turn.
