I'll Love You Forever

Relic awoke to the glare of the blazing sun in her eyes. It was a beautiful Sunday morning, and she had to get up and sell papers. She was about to forget the papers and go back to sleep when she saw a face peering down at her. She opened her eyes wider, and realized it was her boyfriend, Spot Conlon. She closed her eyes again and smiled sweetly.

"Why do ya have ta do dat every morning? You know I don't like to be stared at while im sleepin!" she accused him jokingly. Truthfully, she loved it whenever Spot looked at her. She loved the way his blue eyes gazed lovingly into hers.

She rolled off her bed and onto her feet and Spot went outside Relic's fire escape, and waited for her to get ready to go sell papes.

Relic got dressed in a gray corduroy dress, and brushed her hair with her mother's antique hair brush. Her mother had been killed in a factory fire when she was only 9 years old. The brush had an ivory handle with an elephant carved into it. It was very special memento to her and she wouldn't ever let her older brother sell it. She wasn't even sure he knew she had it.

She walked down the tenement stairs and was about to open the door, when she felt another hand slap it shut.

"Where do you think you're going?" Relic looked up into the face of her older brother, Zachariah. He was in a mob and he knew how to fight. Though she knew he loved her, he had hit her before and she didn't doubt he would do it again. She thought it best just to tell a small lie.

"I'm going to sell papes, and then some of the girls and I are going down to the vaudeville shows to see Medda." It wasn't exactly a lie. She was going to sell papes, and then Spot and her were going down to Medda's. But there would be no other girls there. At least none that she knew of.

She looked back up at her brother, and as though he were thinking, his face was scrunched up in a horrible grimace. Then he opened the door again, and let her walk out. She heard the door slam behind her and Spot climbed down from the top of the fire escape and smiled. Relic smiled back at him. Spot put his arm out for her to hold, and they walked down to the circulation desk together, Relic resting her head on Spot's shoulder.
